Editor's Notes

  1. (40 seconds) Hello everyone! My name is Melissa Turnitsa and I am working on my Master’s in Education with an endorsement in Library Science through ODU. I recently completed a Library Science class LIBS 602 – Production of Instruction Materials. Until recently, I was very hesitant about technology use in the classroom because I am sort of old school. But after taking this course my eyes have been open to the limitless possibilities of these technologies helping students in the classroom. My presentation is titled “The Educator’s Lifeline: Awesome Tools of Technology”. You will be introduced to 5 AWESOME! tools I’ve learned about and hopefully they’ll have you saying, “Where have you been all my life!”
  2. (1 minute) I have worked as a Para educator for the last 10 years for York County Public Schools in Yorktown, Virginia. The last 4 have been at Yorktown Elementary and I have really enjoyed it! I love working with children and seeing them learn and grow! I finally decided I wanted a change, so in the spring of 2013 I went back to school to get my master’s degree in education, concentration in elementary library media. One of my favorite quotes is by Dr. Seuss – “The more you read the more things you know. The more that you learn the more places you’ll go.” This quote always reminds me of how important it is for everyone to know how to read. I also hope it serves as inspiration for children to learn to read and develop a lifelong love of reading! I have been married to my husband Bob for the last 23 years and we have two beautiful daughters, Ashley and Sarah! As you can see from the picture my older daughter Ashley just graduated from High School! She’s not sure what she wants to do, but I told her there is plenty of time for that. Look at me…back in school at 45!
  3. (20 seconds) The 5 tech tools I really liked discovering in my library class and I would like to discuss with you are Animoto, QR (quick response) codes, Big Huge Labs, Narrable, and Wordle. These all have great capabilities of enhancing students learning in the classroom!
  4. (25 seconds) I would like to introduce you to the first awesome tech tool – Animoto. From my experience with Animoto I found it to be very user friendly!  You can choose a template that interests you, add text and pictures and it’s done!  The only downside is you can create a video up to 30 seconds for free and then after that you have to pay. But on the bright side teachers can create free educational accounts. It is such an easy way to create a video and make your pictures come to life!
  5. (4 minutes) Animoto would be great in the classroom for students to make videos of their families or videos to introduce themselves at the beginning of school by using their own pictures. I would like to share with you a couple of examples of Animoto videos. On the right is an Animoto I created of my family for a project in LIBS 602. (play video) I always love showing off my family!! On the left is an example of an anti-bullying Animoto with Lauren Potter, star of “Glee”. (play video) What a creative way to display such a powerful message about such an important issue!!  Also, Animoto would be great for Social Studies or Science projects. Third grade students can conduct an experiment following the steps of the Scientific Method.  They can take pictures during the experiment, put them to music and make an Animoto. Animoto can be used with English SOL 6.5 - The student will read and demonstrate comprehension of a variety of fictional texts, narrative nonfiction, and poetry. Students can use Animoto to create book reviews or poetry projects. Also, students can use Animoto videos to demonstrate their understanding of Social Science SOL 3.7 - Students differentiate between human, capital, and natural resources. As you can see, Animoto has numerous learning possibilities for students in the classroom!
  6. (7 minutes) Now introducing the second awesome tech tool – QR (quick response) Codes! QR Codes can be scanned and linked to a set of data. Devices that can be used to scan codes include IPads, IPods, IPhone Apps, Android phones and tablets. If there is no mobile device available students can use extension in Google Chrome called QRreader beta. If you have a QR Code reading app on your device, you can just scan the code and “Magic” it leads you to a website. Of all the different QR Code generators available I have found QR Code Monkey to be extremely easy and user friendly. You enter the URL of the website it will link to, choose a color for the code, include a logo/image in QR Code if you want, and then Viola! you create your QR Code!  If you scan the QR Code on the left it should lead you to the QR Code Monkey website. If you are able to, take a minute and try to scan and see what happens! (Scan) When taking LIBS 602 this past summer I was able to create my own QR Code for the first time. When thinking about something interesting that my QR code could link to, I thought about the book "The Fault In Our Stars" by John Green.  Many pre-teen girls who are in upper elementary and just starting middle school are crazy about the book.  One thing I know about teenage girls is that they love to quote from their favorite books or movies.  My younger daughter informed me that girls like to take quotes and post them on Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram.  So I thought what an easy way for them to access their favorite quotes from the book. Now scan the QR code on the right and see where it sends you! (Scan) Some limitations of QR Codes include needing to check them regularly to make sure URLs are still functioning and to make sure the code itself still works. Some may become worn out. Librarians can use QR codes in centers as either a part of an activity or as a way for students to check answers.  QR codes can be used as links to book trailers or author websites for students to investigate to decide what books they may be interested in reading. This can be used in collaboration with English SOL 4.5 - The student will read and demonstrate comprehension of fictional texts, narrative nonfiction texts, and poetry, and English SOL 4.6 - The student will read and demonstrate comprehension of nonfiction texts. QR Codes can be used with English SOL 3.4 & 4.4 - The student will expand vocabulary when reading. Students can use QR Codes in the classroom with vocabulary and word walls. Students can scan the code for information about the word. Codes can also be used for flash cards. Some other ideas can include teachers using codes for assessments and exit slips from a lesson. I had seen codes being used in my school but didn’t really know what they were about or how to use them. Now that I have experience with them, I think they are the coolest thing!
  7. (5 minutes) Let’s take a few minutes for any questions or suggestions you might have about Animoto or QR Codes. What ideas presented here do you like? Are there any other ways you might consider using these tools in the classroom or library?
  8. (40 seconds) Let’s move on to the third awesome tool…Big Huge Labs. Just like the home page states, Big Huge Labs helps people do really neat things with their digital photos! Some examples of products that can be created include magazine covers, jigsaw puzzles, mosaic makers, trading cards, and much more…what great possibilities! With these products you can add text, images, and manipulate images. Teachers can create education accounts and then create ID cards for each student. A limitation to using Big Huge Labs is there is no spell check, so for projects such as magazine covers and trading cards, students and teachers should double check their work.
  9. (1 minute, 40 seconds) Here are some examples of products made using Big Huge Labs. I have provided a couple of examples of magazine covers that I created for an online educational class. One displays a picture of me and my family…to introduce myself to my online classmates. The other is an example I created for 4th grade Science on Living and Nonliving things for an assignment in the same class. The trading card could be created for 3rd – 5th grade history. The motivational poster can be used by teachers for vocabulary…just add a picture, the vocab word, and the definition. Big Huge Labs helps educators use digital images in the classroom. Educators can create trading cards in social studies of Explorers or Famous Americans in collaboration with History SOL 3.11 - identifying the contributions of George Washington; Thomas Jefferson; Abraham Lincoln; Rosa Parks; Thurgood Marshall; Martin Luther King, Jr.; and Cesar Chavez; or different types of animals for science projects. Trading cards can also be used in collaboration with Science SOL 3.11 - The student will investigate and understand different sources of energy; sources of renewable energy; and sources of nonrenewable energy. Magazine covers can be created by students for book reports, character analysis, short stories, and summaries. The mosaic maker can be used to make a collage for a project on a country in social studies. And again you have so many numerous and wonderful possibilities for another AWESOME tech tool…Big Huge Labs!
  10. (1 minute) The 4th awesome tech tool I would like to share with you is…Narrable. Narrable is a form of electronic storytelling where students tell a short story by adding narration to pictures they have taken or found online. Teachers can create free accounts and add students. It can work in any browser on most devices including tablets, iPads, and Smartboards. Students can use their own photos and illustrations, historical pictures, and numerous images online. They can also record audio directly in the browser, Narrable can call them on their cell phones, or students can upload an audio recording stored in their computer! Projects can be shared via email, Facebook, or embedding it into a blog. Some limitations of Narrable are that the user cannot use more than five pictures, and it only allows one voice recording per page. But even with 5 pictures someone can still tell an amazing story!
  11. (5 minutes, 15 seconds) Students can use Narrable to create stories involving character development. They can also create stories about history; for example, a famous historical event or a famous person in history. Some ideas could include the Civil War or Abraham Lincoln. This could be in collaboration with the History SOL 3.11 - identifying the contributions of George Washington; Thomas Jefferson; Abraham Lincoln; Rosa Parks; Thurgood Marshall; Martin Luther King, Jr. Students can prepare interactive show and tells, using photos from home. Teachers can have their classes create collaborative books (ABC, narratives, and creative writing.) Teachers and students can use Narrable at the beginning of the year for personal introductions. I would like to show you 2 very interesting videos I have provided. The first one is a Narrable video about Rosa Parks, a champion for Civil Rights, which connects to the History SOL 3.11. (play video) The second one is a Narrable video about Nat Turner’s Rebellion…he was a controversial and integral part of the American slavery issue. (play video) Hopefully, these examples will encourage you to try out Narrable yourself and with your students to see what you can create!!!
  12. (5 minutes) Let’s take a few minutes for any questions or suggestions you might have about Big Huge Labs products or Narrable. What ideas presented here do you like? Are there any other ways you might consider using these tools in the classroom or library?
  13. (1 minute) And now for the 5th and final awesome tech tool…Wordle! Just like the home page says…Wordle is used for creating “word clouds” from words or text, such as a document or website, that you use. You can use different fonts, layouts, color schemes, and you are able to use them however you like. You can print them or share them. Wordle is free…which is always a good thing! The more frequently a word is used in the text the larger it will be in the Wordle. Wordle automatically takes out the common words like a, the, to, at, in. But Wordle does offer an option to have them included. Teachers need to be aware that if they want students to create a Wordle, they need to send them to (http://wordle.net/create) instead of the Wordle homepage. This is new to me but apparently the homepage is uncensored so occasionally Wordles with inappropriate language and themes may show up! One limitation of Wordle is that it will not notice small differences in the same word, so that word will be treated like two separate subjects. Also, to keep word grouping together, you have to use the tilda ~ symbol.
  14. (4 minutes, 15 seconds) Wordle…What a creative way to use words! I would like you to watch a short Wordle tutorial that I believe would help someone get their feet wet if they have never used Wordle before. (play video) There is also an example of a Wordle that I created for my LIBS 602 class…I included words from my journey to becoming a school librarian. I’ve never felt I’m a very creative person, but creating this Wordle made me realize I have a little more creativity in me than I thought! There are some neat ideas for using Wordle in the classroom. Students can use Wordles to create “All About Me” projects at the start of the school year. Teachers can copy and paste the class syllabus and the class rules or expectations into Wordle and display it in the classroom. Students can create Wordles from vocabulary words. Just put the word and definition into a Wordle. Librarians can have students create Wordles comparing different genres (science fiction vs. fantasy, myths vs. fables, fairy tales vs. tall tales). They can also create a character trait analysis of characters from a book the class is reading. For the SOLs 5th grade students can use Wordles to collect main ideas and supporting text from books they are reading. English SOL 5.5 Also, 5th grade students can use Wordle to learn differences between fact & opinion and compare & contrast. English SOL 5.6
  15. (5minutes) Let’s take a few minutes for any questions or suggestions you might have about Wordle or any of the other awesome tech tools. What ideas presented here do you like? Are there any other ways you might consider using this tool or any of the others in the classroom or library?
  16. (20 seconds) In conclusion, I want to thank everyone for taking their time to listen to my presentation. I hope I was able to provide everyone with some valuable information that can be taken away and used to help enhance the learning of our students!!! Never be afraid to ask questions and encourage your students to do the same!! Estimated presentation length: 42 minutes, 35 seconds
