WHAT ARE CONDUCTING
POLYYMERS?
• Most of the common polymers we use are insulators
• The Polymers which conduct electricity are called conducting polymers.
• Polymers need to be externally activated in order to conduct electricity
• They are classified based on their activation
• Polymers with high crystallinity that is high crystal formation ability are
generally good conductors of electricity

Editor's Notes

  • #1 Good Morning/Afternoon everyone! My name is Kudupudi Charan Sai and today I am going to briefly discuss Conducting Polymers.
  • #2 Generally most of the polymers which we use or know about are insulators, that is they do not conduct electricity. Conductors are those materials which can conduct electricity and hence Conducting Polymers are the polymers which can conduct electricity. For a material to conduct electricity, it must posses a free electron However, this is not an inherent trait in most polymers. They need to be externally activated in order to conduct electricity and are classified based on their activation technique Polymers with high crystallinity are generally good conductors of electricity
  • #3 Conducting Polymers are classified as shown. They are classified broadly as intrinsic and extrinsic conducting polymers. Intrinsic conducting polymers are further classified as Pi Conjugated conducting Polymers and Doped Conducting Polymers. Let us briefly discuss each.
  • #4 Pi conjugate polymers are the polymers which have pi bond as back bone Pi bond is a cloud of electrons which are excess in a polymer which form pi bond (or) Delocalizing of electron pair in the polymer increases the conductivity of polymer Since these ICPs have electrons in excess now electrons can flow from one point to another point Examples of such pi conjugated conducting polymers include polyacetylene and polyaniline. Dopped conducting polymers also known as dcps So what are dcps these polymers go under a process called doping Dopping is a process of adding certain impurities inside a material now these impurities can be positive or negative impurities . we should remember that these impurities are added by us that means those are desirable impurities because of that addition the particular polymer will start to conduct electricity If positive impurities or cations are dopped with polymer it is p type cp If negative impurities or anions are dopped with polymer it is n type conducting polymers Examples of such polymers include polyquinoline
  • #5 Moving on to Extrinsic Conducting Polymer Ecp is of two types Cefp(conducting element filled polymer) Bcp(blended conducting polymer) Cefp means we have a element which is a conducting element and we filled up a polymer with that element which means now the polymer has the ability to conduct electricity. Examples include Polyfuran Bcp are nothing but a regular polymer is now blended with certain conducting polymer and this blend will start conducting electricity. Examples include Polyaniline
  • #6 Applications of cp 1 in recharble light weight batteries these batteries are 10 times lighter than pb storage batteries 2 In optical displays 3 they are used in construction of photovoltaic cells like al/ conducting polymers/pt 4 in telecommunications system.
