Visual Communications at LOESCHE | DEKOM Case StudyLOESCHE
The global company's challenge: at LOESCHE, colleagues, partners, suppliers and customers are dispersed all around the world. Delivering a UC Experience - Migration vs. IntegrationWainhouse Research
A well-implemented and fully-adopted UC solution delivers benefits to end users, IT teams, and the enterprise alike. Of course, the terms “well-implemented” and “full-adopted” are more often found in UC roadmaps and strategy presentations, and less often in live production environments. This SlideShare provides a comparison between two common approaches to UC deployment: Migration vs Integration. Our goal is to challenge the traditional approach, and investigate a potentially faster path to a fully unified user experience – without risk to the end user, the IT team, or the business.
The document discusses how the workplace and collaboration needs have changed, with teams now working interdependently from various locations using various devices. PeopleLink is a more flexible and scalable video conferencing solution compared to hardware-based solutions. It allows participants to join from any device through BYOD and licenses can be scaled up without needing new hardware. In contrast, hardware-based solutions require purchasing new equipment for each additional endpoint. PeopleLink also has lower capital and recurring costs since it doesn't require dedicated bandwidth or frequent hardware replacements. Its licenses are perpetual and come with remote support, while hardware solutions have shorter lifecycles and on-site support.
This cover story discusses the importance of teaching children the art of forgiveness. The author conducted a survey that found many parents still feel hurt and have not truly forgiven friends over past incidents. Counselling experts say forgiveness means being able to recall past hurt without reliving the stress, and is beneficial for lowering depression and anxiety. The first step to forgiving others is forgiving oneself. On International Forgiveness Day, the story encourages teaching children to forgive and forget mistakes in order to strengthen relationships and embrace forgiveness as a virtue.

use globally,” says Joe Pappalardo, VP, network services.
“We are a technology-intensive company, and the goal was
to express our technological prowess in a public and client-
facing manner,” Pappalardo says.
A Project Done Right
Much of AVI-SPL’s work on this project, which began in
November 2013, encompassed lobby spaces and Northern
Trust’s Global Conference Center.
“Northern Trust is a client that’s very involved, and they
know what they want,” says Adam Stanton, AVI-SPL project
engineer. “It makes our job much easier.”
Easier, but not without its challenges. One of those challenges
involved an interactive Planar video wall that would go against
a curved marble wall in the headquarters’ public lobby. To
ensure full touch capabilities, the team had to make sure the
framed bezel covering the overlay sensors stayed flush with
the monitors.
“You still had to have the monitors flat in order to track your
fingers,” explains Doug Goczkowski, AVI-SPL project manager.
Goczkowski and his group coordinated with the construction
team, the content provider, and Harley-Ellis (the architect) to
come up with a solution that worked for all parties involved.
“You really pulled it off,” says Pappalardo. “Your team did all
the leveling from the front, as opposed to going to the wall and
saying ‘make this flat.’”
The centerpiece of the Global Conference Center is the Miami
room, a four-way divisible meeting space that includes flat-
panel displays, a media matrix switcher for sending signals
to those displays, connections for computers, ceiling speakers
and a digital signal processor with echo cancellation for all
audio sources. When it functions as one large space, the main
room has video conferencing capabilities, and presenters can
make use of two video walls made up of 88 Christie MicroTiles
each and measuring 200 inches diagonally. When divided, two
of the rooms are able to access the display walls. However, to
A divisible meeting space offers video conferencing,
presentation capabilities and echo cancellation.

accommodate the smaller spaces, a video processor reduces
the number of tiles being sent signals, resulting in a 165-inch
display.
“That’s pretty unique,” says Goczkowski. Next to the Miami
space is a line of four breakout rooms with AV capability,
one of which includes video conferencing. Others technology
includes large flat-panel displays with touch overlays, matrix
switchers, computer inputs, and advanced audio integration
(including a digital signal processor with echo cancellation).
For conference room scheduling and system control, AVI-SPL’s
team relied on Crestron equipment.
“Every component that could have been Crestron is,” says
Goczkowski. “It’s always the solid solution.”
“It’s all automated,” says Stanton, who led the work on
programming for the touch panels. “They can do whatever
they want on the fly.”
The touch panels in each room activate and deactivate the
appropriate space depending on which walls are up or down.
For example, if rooms A and B in the Miami area are combined,
then touch panel A is active and B is not, and A controls the
combined space.
A Crestron DigitalMedia system is centrally located in the AV
closet and enables Northern Trust staff to send any video
signal to any display from any room, including presentations
and video conferencing feeds.
“It was good your team came through,” says Pappalardo.
“That’s a common thread working with AVI-SPL: making good
on issues as they crop up. That’s something we can always
count on – the project will be done right.”
Ready for the Next Hundred Years
By the time the Northern Trust anniversary arrived, the new
headquarters had been equipped for the celebration, ready
to launch into its next 125 years. AVI-SPL’s team made the
deadline. More importantly, the work it completed now enables
the company to bring staff together with vendors and clients in

a beautiful and accessible space.
The Global Conferencing Center is at the heart of that
collaborative mentality.
“I expect it will get business anywhere from two to six meeting
sessions on a daily basis,” says Pappalardo. “The entire
concept is gaining a head of steam.”
“People are generally impressed with the technology,” he
adds. “It’s not just the technology, but the treatment of the
rooms to work with the technology.”
Because the conference rooms are for clients, the equipment
had to be easy to use – and it is.
“We put convenient technology at our business partners’
fingertips so we can impress our clients,” says Pappalardo.
“It’s really all about the client.”
That dedication to the client is reflected in the company’s
support services. An AV concierge is on staff to assist
whenever clients or staff are using the rooms.
Beyond the conference areas are spaces that accommodate
the one-way delivery of content like information and
entertainment. The Concierge Lounge, which functions as the
lobby area to the conference center, includes a digital signage
display that lists meetings scheduled for that day as well as
weather, time, date, and a scrolling news ticker. Another lounge
offers a space where guests can relax and watch cable TV.

Engage At-Risk Students
Camelot Education touts itself as a national leader in
alternative education, and runs a variety of schools tailored
to give students of all types the guidance and support they
need to succeed academically while gaining the life skills for
success outside the classroom.
Among its education facilities around the country, Camelot
operates four of its Excel academies in the Chicago area.
These accelerated schools give near-dropout students ages
16 to 21 an encouraging environment in which they can earn the
credits they need to obtain their high school diploma.
To engage those students, Camelot would continue its
investment in the interactive SMART Boards that had been
used successfully at its other schools.
Knowing the positive affect SMART Boards had for
other Camelot Education schools, the director of the
Excel Academy of Englewood made it a priority to
have them implemented.

“The SMART Boards and software increase student
engagement,” says Kevin Sweetland, executive director of the
Chicago Excel Academy in Englewood. “So when we opened
the Englewood location, one of my first priorities was to have
them implemented.”
Taking the SMART Approach
AVI-SPL integrated the SMART Boards with Notebook software
for multiple rooms at the Excel Academy, as well as for the
Camelot Academy of Chicago. It also integrated the boards at
the Camelot Academy of the Quad Cities in Moline, Il, which
is one of Camelot’s Therapeutic Day Schools for students
who may be on the autism spectrum or are developmentally
delayed.
Those boards allow students in various classes -- math,
science, English, and social studies -- to take hands-on
participation in the curriculum. Multiple students can use the
board at once, working through lessons that their teachers
created using Notebook. AVI-SPL staff trained teachers at both
campuses in best practices for using the SMART Boards.
Bringing Life to the Classroom
“When we first got [the SMART Boards], the response was
very positive from the students,” says Sweetland.
The use of the interactive boards varies depending on what
the teacher wants to do.
“They can be used for functions, graphs, and charts to bring
to life what students would normally only see on paper,” says
Sweetland. “Plus they can see embedded video clips.
“AVI-SPL and SMART Technologies are definitely a great
partner. They bring life to the classroom and make it a little bit
easier on our teachers on our staff and a little more engaging
for our students every day.”

The Los Angeles County Metropolitan Transportation

builds and operates public transportation for nearly 10 million

Until recently, L.A. Metro had relied on outdated AV technology
to conduct and record the board hearings at its headquarters
in downtown Los Angeles.
The old system, which was analog and dated to the early
1990s, was long overdue for an upgrade. To give one example,
turning up the volume to support the whole room would result
in feedback and other audio issues.

replacements was on eBay,” says Arlen Sanders, project
manager in the Information Technology Services department
with L.A. Metro. “It was becoming a nightmare to administrate.
The technicians were getting blamed when they didn’t have a
lot of control over the whole thing. It was an embarrassment
for them to have to deal with that.”
Sanders, who has over 30 years of communication experience,
had retired in June 2010, but was asked to come back for the
project in 2012.
“AVI-SPL’s response to the RFP [request for proposals] was the
best of the group,” says Sanders. “We weren’t looking for the
lowest price, but for value and quality at a good price. I had
other vendors who told me what I needed and didn’t listen to
me telling them what I needed. AVI-SPL listened.”
Four Areas of Focus
In designing for the project, AVI-SPL engineer Jon Chang made
sure the technology implemented would meet four areas of
focus: flexibility, expansion, longevity and functionality.
“Jon is one of the top engineers in the country,” says Ali Shah,
AVI-SPL sales engineer. “He put the client and their vision and
the integrity of the design first.”
The most notable of the spaces worked on was the public
boardroom, which consists of a large dais for the board members,
and the audience area, which accommodates around 300.
To facilitate the flow of committee meetings, the dais includes
gooseneck microphones and features VoteView software,
which Chang developed and which allows committee
members to view the voting system and presentation content
on the same displays. Members vote using AMX Enova touch
panels. Presenters can connect their laptops at two locations
— a staff area and the presenter podium.
The audience area in front of the dais features loudspeakers,
wireless mics, an assisted listening system, and a PTZ (pan-
tilt-zoom) camera that points to the board members sitting
at the dais. A second camera is dedicated to the speaking
audience member. The camera views and presentation content

can be routed to overflow conference rooms on the third floor,
training rooms and the cafeteria. Pre-recorded materials can
also be sent to these areas.
Because the auditorium-style seating area is wide, AVI-SPL
used Meyer Sound digitally steerable line-array speakers.
This ensures that anyone sitting and/or standing anywhere in
the space hears quality audio.
“The audio was a critical piece,” says Shah. “L.A. Metro
wanted it to look aesthetically pleasing and utilize today’s
latest and best technology. We were also trying to eliminate
a ‘best’ seat.”
From the control room, Biamp Tesira digital signal processing
handles the audio processing and distribution for all areas.
Two projectors (the second provided for backup) work with the
projection screen that is mounted behind the dais. Two AMX
Modero touch panels control the video displays and the
distribution and volume of the audio in the public hearing space.
“The dedication and commitment of our team and L.A. Metro
on every aspect of the project were the key factors to its overall
success,” says Shah. “You wish all clients would bring this
kind of commitment and synergy to the table.”
Shah had much praise for L.A. Metro’s Sanders, who dealt
with design, logistics, planning and project management. “He
wasn’t just on top of it; his manner was positive,” says Shah.
“That’s important for the technicians onsite and the project
managers. He was as instrumental as we were in keeping this
project on track.”
Shah also credits Joe Giba, the executive sponsor and deputy
CIO overseeing the project, with exhibiting great leadership on
behalf of Metro. Much of that leadership came in the form of
asking higher-level questions about the project relating to the
user experience.
Although not a sound engineer, Giba has a keen appreciation
for the requirements of a state-of-the-art AV system. He was
instrumental in contributing to the system specifications
pertaining to quality assurance and user experience.
Since the completion of the integration, AVI-SPL has supported
L.A. Metro through a customer service contract that provides
expert assistance from its help desk.
The Good Kind of Feedback
Sanders says board members and audience members alike
have noted the improved audio. “They’ll say, ‘Wow, I can just
hear everything,’” notes Sanders. “The system makes it seem
like you’re just hearing people talk, even though they may be a
hundred feet away from you.”
With the old system, some of the board members could forget
about the microphones’ limitations by not turning on the switch
orbynotspeakingdirectlyintothem.“Withthissystem,theaudience
and the other board members are self-policing now,” says
Sanders. “They can see the red light when somebody’s mic isn’t
on and let the speaker know. It’s a lot more efficient and organized.”
Where technicians used to have trouble figuring out which
microphonewascausingproblems,theycannowuseBiampTesira
to reference a virtual console that has indicators for each mic.
“If we were to get feedback, we can tell where it’s coming from,”
says Sanders. “The technicians can feel more at ease, and they
can control the volume very easily.”
They can also record meetings using a Blu-ray disc recorder
and an HDD recorder. In the conference rooms, staff can give
presentations from the room’s PC, which connects to the large-
screen display and takes a variety of inputs.
Prior to the integration, translators, technicians and the rear
projector shared the same control area, a scenario where they
could get in each other’s way. Now, they have their own separate
control room spaces.
The project was such a success that L.A. Metro and Sanders were
graciousenoughtopermitanotherAVI-SPLclienttotourthefacility.
“We’re proud of our boardroom and proud of the job AVI-SPL
did,” Sanders says. “The most important thing was that they
listened. It was sort of a perfect relationship of mutual respect
and good working relations.”

Adapt as Plans Evolve
AVI-SPL handled the AV and lighting throughout the casino,
including the theater, steakhouse, and buffet area. Our team
installed hundreds of displays throughout the facility – from
slot-machine displays to single-screen mounts to complex
video walls like the one in R Bar, a high-tech lounge and
gaming area.
An RF cable system is at the heart of the video integration,
one that allows for further expansion. Much of AVI-SPL’s work
engineering and expanding the RF backbone was done on the
fly during construction. As the project progressed, the layout
evolved, affecting the location of each cluster of displays.
“RF is a robust way of delivering an HD signal,” says Will
Parry, AVI-SPL VP of Sales. “It was a natural fit, and a cost-
effective way to get the job done.”
“The RF system is cutting edge while still being ‘old-school,’”
adds Hope. “It’s reliable and and gives us a lot more flexibility.
I can put any signal anywhere.”
An entertainment venue in the middle of the casino — Ram’s
Head Center Stage — includes Crown amplifiers and BSS
processing that distributes sound via left and right clusters/
under-stage subwoofers and then ties into the ceiling speakers
(as needed) in adjacent zones.
This was a fast-track construction project, and the design
evolved as the work progressed. Changes made to display
locations affected the speaker locations and RF design. AVI-
SPL was part of the creative process, working with Shannon
Jelenek, the AV designer and Gary Spritz, the construction
executive for Cordish in a collaborative manner. AVI-SPL
completed the project on time, even as it worked on other
areas, like the back-of-house system, training rooms, and
executive briefing rooms with AV support. Part of the scope
of work included banks of slot machines (nearly 4000), whose
displays would have to show denomination signs as well as
advertising.
“The schedule for the work is always the challenging part,”
says Parry. “We pulled in a local subcontractor, Malstrom
electric from Baltimore, and put in 500 TVs in a week. “

Hope says that one of the best things about working with
AVI-SPL has been the ability to contact the team members
and have them come out on short notice as new facets to the
project are added. That ability to grow was by design.
“AVI-SPL helped us build a system that already had expansion
designed into it,” says Hope.
During the construction process it became clear that the design
requirements for technology would continue to evolve right up
to opening. To support these changes, the AV team worked
hand in hand with management. AVI-SPL was an integral part
of the team and was able to deliver a fully functional system
to meet or exceed the owners’ requirements. It was a fully
collaborative effort, one where AVI-SPL was a trusted part of
the construction team.
“The partnership been great,” Hope says of working with
AVI-SPL. “They have the knowledge of the technology that’s
available and how to integrate it. Anytime I have a question,
everybody is very helpful.”
Getting the Wow Factor
The guest experience at the new Maryland Live! Casino is
about more than calculating the odds and placing bets. It’s a
visually intense experience built for entertainment, one where
video displays dominate the 160,000-square-foot casino
floor. Some of the displays deliver content specific to the
games on the floor, while others feature digital signage and
entertainment content like advertising for in-house events and
live sporting events.
“Theintegrationgivesmealotmoreflexibilityandallowsforinstant

Inside the R Bar, over 100 LCD displays in an exploded array
feature electronic games for the entertainment of patrons.
Maryland Live staff use an AMX control system touch panel
to easily call up various presets and select which channels
should go on a particular display. Using the touch panels,
bartenders have the ability to put channels on TVs around the bar.
For the nightly music concerts at Ram’s Head Center Stage,
a high-output projector uses IMAG (image magnification) to
show large-scale images of the performers or video content to
augment the show.
Maryland Live! handles its own content creation for the digital
signage. The casino quickly can pull up what they want with
a Contemporary Research control system, some of the content
promotional, some geared toward entertainment.
“When we have promotional drawings, the screens on the
casino floor switch over seamlessly to the screens the
customers see in Ram’s Head,” says Hope. “It captures
people’s attention.”
Minor jackpots can be zoned to particular areas. If somebody
wins a major jackpot, audio and video are initiated to
announce and celebrate the winner. The casino is working on
implementing new ways of engaging with guests using the
displays.
“For major jackpots, we’re introducing a Winner’s Wall, which
will display photos of winners with their consent.” says Hope.
“It’s exceeded our expectations,” says Hope of the overall
integration. “We hoped for the ‘wow’ factor, and we’ve achieved
it. Guests who have visited other properties comment on
the quantity and quality of our multimedia systems. They’re
feedback is that it’s not overpowering, and that the music is at
just the right level.”

Improve Interdisciplinary Collaboration
The University of Toledo Interprofessional Immersive
Simulation Center (UT - IISC) has, as part of its mission, the
goal to train students in virtual immersive environments in
order to produce medical graduates who excel in clinical
practice and medical research. To help meet these goals,
the IISC incorporates clinical simulation scenarios and 3D
visualization technology with the aim of preparing learners for
the safest possible clinical care of real patients.
The UT-IISC is located on the school’s Health Science Campus,
which is home to 3,000 health care students and consists of
three interconnected centers that have been purposefully
designed to foster interdisciplinary collaboration. The desire
to advance interprofessional education – primarily, but not
limited to healthcare providers -- was one of the driving forces
behind the center.

“There needs to be better collaboration between the
disciplines, especially in healthcare, to improve patient
outcomes,” says Dr. Pamela Boyers, executive director of the
IISC.
“Patients in this day and age are in the hospital a very short
period of time and frequently move between teams,” says
Boyers. “So it’s terribly important for us to address patient
safety early in training. Learning to work in teams early and
throughout their education helps achieve that goal.”
Another driving factor behind the UT- IISC is the need to evolve
teaching methods that accommodate the exponential growth
in medical knowledge.
For example, “Physicians are constantly adding more material
to the curriculum,” says Boyers. “To passively assimilate
content in classrooms isn’t necessarily the most effective
way of teaching healthcare students to take care of patients.”
Achieving competency through “hands-on” skill development
is essential – as well as learning how to think through
situations.”
To fully realize the IISC capabilities, the University of Toledo
relied on the systems integration experts at AVI-SPL.
Interactive Systems Unlike Anything
AVI-SPL used the combined talents of its Advanced
Visualization team, Medical Team, and Systems Integration
Group to implement systems like IPTV, digital signage,
collaboration rooms, and interactive video walls with detailed
resolution. Many of these are powered by display solutions by

Sharp and Cisco's video collaboration solutions.
“We integrated all of these systems into one intelligent
building,” says Bill Schmidt, AVI-SPL director of sales. That
means different technology areas of the building are able to
talk to one another and interact via Crestron control systems.
“We’re providing all the cameras and network infrastructure
for the surgical suites,” says Schmidt. “Monitors then allow
instructors to view what those cameras see.”
The jewel of the integration is within the first floor’s 3D and
Virtual Immersive Reality Center. There, a five-sided iSpace
Barco system projects images on the ceiling, floor and three
walls, creating a futuristic holodeck-type environment. AVI-
SPL is also tasked with making it possible to sync the system
with one similar at Ohio’s Wright Patterson Air Force Base.
Also in the VIR Center is a curved CAD wall, which can
accommodate up to 30 learners. As with the iSpace,
participants wear 3D glasses with trackers that give each
individual a customized view of projected images.
“These are the highest fidelity devices of their type on
the planet,” says Schmidt. “You as a viewer are part of the
application, with a fidelity level that is unlike anything else.”
The second and third floors have, respectively, the Advanced
Clinical Simulation Center and the Progressive Anatomy &
Surgical Skills Center. In both of these areas, cameras and
displays are set up so that instructors can monitor learners. All
three centers can communicate audio-visual content internally
throughout the building as well as broadcast externally.

throughout the IISC. A video wall in the lobby greets visitors,
and provides information for anything the IT staff wants to
share, including advertising and stories.
New Ways to Transfer Knowledge

foot tri-center area that is considered unique in academia
as well as highly advanced. Here, healthcare students and
learners can be trained in virtual clinical environments with
the overarching goal of reducing errors in patient treatment
while improving the outcomes of healthcare.
“This center gives us an opportunity to transform traditional
education by learning experientially,” says Boyers. “We
also wanted to stimulate both learners and faculty by using
disruptive technologies to discover new ways to transfer
knowledge and create new research opportunities.”
In the 3D and Virtual Immersive Reality Center, learners can
now immerse themselves in any environment, such as an
operating room, and interact with any images projected on the
iSpace walls. For example, they can dissect a skull or immerse
themselves in cells and organs, and fly through a heart or the
whole human body.
“UT is among the first to apply 3D and VIR environments to
train healthcare professionals,” says Boyers. “Students come
to medicine, pharmacy, and nursing college already familiar
with gaming concepts and visual technologies. They love
this ‘Disneyesque’ world in which they can actually see and
experience what is being taught. Our hope is that they will
gain knowledge faster, retain it better and, working with the
other available simulation technologies, be able to apply their
knowledge and skills more efficiently and effectively for the
ultimate benefit of their patients.”
In the second floor’s Advanced Clinical Simulation Center, robotic
mannequins are part of a different kind of virtual environment,
one that includes patient care facilities such as an operating
room, trauma center, and birthing suites. Each space has human
patient simulators that can be programmed to be patients with
any kind of diagnosis. UT-IISC calls this the Elliptical Hospital,
where students take care of their robotic patients and learn
to work in teams. The clinical center is equipped with digital
cameras that oversee and record student performance in these
spaces so that instructors and learners can review how they
perform during the simulations. From a central control room,
staff can actually “drive” the patient simulators through the

course of an illness, manage the situation (ranging from routine
to emergency care) while learners from different disciplines
-- anesthesia, surgery, nursing, pharmacy, respiratory therapy,
physical therapy and so on – practice in teams to care for
patients. These scenarios teach clinical competencies, team
skills and good communication between team members - as
well as with their patients.
The third floor’s Progressive Anatomy & Surgical Skills
Center uses a very different kind of simulation. This center is
run like a hospital and this is where advanced learners like
surgeons, radiologists, physician assistants, and surgical
nurse practitioners can practice surgical procedures including
operating-room protocols. Here, all healthcare professionals
can partner with industry in research and development in the
arena of surgical instrumentation. The goal of this center is
to ensure that all doctors, nurses, and PAs can safely learn
new surgical techniques and work together in these virtual OR
settings prior to caring for real patients.
“The Interprofessional Immersive Simulation Center provides
UT with the widest range of simulation modalities in the world
in one building,” says Boyers. “The learners can move from
one level to the next to maximize their experiences. They can
learn about the heart in the virtual spaces, then they can take
care of the patient in the Elliptical Hospital and, if necessary,
advance their training on the surgical skills floor. We even
have a simulated home unit. The ultimate goal is to make
sure they’re competent before working with patients.” Surgical

training workshops for local, national and global surgeons
can also be conducted in this center.
While especially designed for those in the health professions
– doctors, nurses, allied healthcare professionals -- the
IISC is also available to those in other disciplines, such as
arts, engineering and natural sciences. The IISC also works
with industry to create new instrumentation, test products
and study outcomes. Through its educational partnership
agreement with Wright Patterson AFB, the center conducts
medical training exercises. One goal is to connect the IISC
iSpace with its counterpart at Wright Patterson in order to
enhance military/industry/university collaboration, including
training and research opportunities. Another business
opportunity for the IISC is to develop medical content training
modules for distribution.
“We have some marvelous faculty with great imaginations
who are using their expertise to transfer their lectures into
interactive learning experiences,” says Boyers.
Between 1,500 to 2,000 learners come to the center each
month, and the response has been very positive.
“The students love it; they absolutely embrace it,” says Boyers.
That kind of reaction is validation of the work AVI-SPL put into
this ambitious project to give the University of Toledo what it
wanted.
“We made the very best decision,” says Boyers. “AVI-SPL
has been phenomenal. We’ve worked with a great group of
people at every level. They’ve been responsive. They’ve been
thoughtful. They’ve gone out of their way when we needed
special help.”
