Monitoring Comprehension:
 The Inner Conversation
        Chapter 6
What a teacher wants……
• We want them (the students) to merge what
they are thinking with the text information
building knowledge as they go. (pg 75)
• We teach the language lessons of monitoring
so that our kids can monitor meaning,
articulate their thinking and become strategic
readers who develop new insights. (pg 75)
What a teacher does……
• Strategy Lessons
  – Following the Inner Voice
  – Noticing When We Stray from the Inner Voice
  – Knowing When You Know and Knowing When You
    Don’t Know
  – Noticing and Exploring thinking
  – Read, Write, and Talk
Following the Inner Conversation
• When readers read and construct meaning, they
  carry on an inner conversation.
• Teachers model things readers hear in their
  heads. (questions, connections, reactions)
• Teachers provide open ended and specific
  questions to guide students thinking.
• Students use sticky notes to record their thinking.
• Students are provided time to discuss what they
  learn.
Noticing When We Stray from the
         Inner Conversation
• Why do we stray?
  – Make a personal connection fade away.
  – Lack of background knowledge and we lose
    meaning.

• What do teachers do?
  – Have a class discussion about what makes readers
    stray.
  – Model what happens when you stray.
Knowing When You Know and
     Knowing When You Don’t Know
• It is extremely important for teachers to know
and help students when they are confused.
• Have students monitor their confusion by
writing “Huh” on the top half of a sticky note
and placing it where the confusion starts. As
they read on if they come to an
understanding, they move the sticky note and
write their thoughts on the bottom half.
Noticing and Exploring Thinking
• Monitoring happens when readers pay
attention to their own thinking and explore it.
• Making write down their connections
  – Thinking
  – Emotions
  – Reactions
Read, Write, and Talk
Differentiation
• Using read alouds allows students to practice
comprehension strategies with out the task of
  reading text.

• Use a large print of text to monitor thinking
  and chart responses
