Balance/Imbalance
Some elements in an image have more power of
attraction than others. The artist uses the elements to
create interesting images.

Symmetry
• Symmetry is what occurs when one side of something
balances out, or mirrors the other.
• There are may examples in nature. Animals, plants
….are symmetrical.
• Can you think of any more examples of symmetry in
nature?

Can you see any symmetry in this painting? What type?
For the next activities you will need a sheet of paper, scissors, felt-tip
pens and glue.
There are two types of symmetry:
 Axial symmetry. If we draw a line in the middle of the image,
both sides correspond. The line is called AXIS
 Central symmetry. is when every part has a matching part: the
same distance from thecentral point, but in the opposite
direction

Weaving is the textile art in which two distinct sets of
threads are interlaced with each other at right angles to
form a fabric.
Some weavers use both axial and central symmetric patterns for the desings.

THE RULE OF THIRDS
 It is another way to create interesting compositions.
 The space for the image is divided in 9 equal rectangles by using horizontal
and vertical lines.
 The four points where the lines crossed, are the areas with a higher visual
weight in the composition, those are the most powerful parts.
 Elements placed along those lines, will make the composition more
interesting.
