Supply Chain & Logistics Basics: The Automotive Supply ChainAngela Carver
Despite the economic downturn, the U.S. automotive supply chain has seen significant growth. Sales volume increased from 10 million to 15.6 million units between 2009 and 2013. These unit increases can be associated not only to improvements in economy, but solid efforts to implement industry best practices to solve supply chain challenges. Some of the top challenges faced by the automotive supply chain include inability to adapt to fluctuations in demand due to capacity constraints, financial constraints due to lack of liquidity, supply chain complexity increases with the globalization of the supply chain, qualified labor shortages and lack of information visibility with legacy technologies. Outdated supplier technology is present most often in tier 2 suppliers such as metal stampers and die casters. Lack of production management systems causes significant delays for OEMs and downstream supply chain partners.
According to the Global Supply Chain Survey 2013 automotive industry leaders plan to focus on both continuous improvement efforts relating to production efficiency and inventory management. Focusing on improving these areas can help to reduce costs and increase supplier collaboration. The top four areas of focus identified in this study were cost minimization, delivery performance, volume flexibility and complexity management. This is where industry best practices come into play. To address these issues automotive supply chain operators are implementing EDI/ASN to more effectively manage inbound shipment schedules and facility staffing. The information gleaned from this change allows these businesses to be proactive rather than reactive. Supply chain managers are also implementing documentation management protocols in order to comply with regulations and improve recall execution. In response to omni-channel retailing the automotive supply chain is also now aggregating orders into once centralized location such as a warehouse management system (WMS). This provides fulfillment centers with a more holistic view of inventory data. With this more accurate view of data, supply chain operations can also reduce on-hand inventory and focus on a just-in-time (JIT) replenishment strategy. This helps to reduce costs creating savings that can be passed on to customers. Transportation routing and other analytics are also being used to make data more accessible to all key supply chain players, including customers. Reducing The Cost Of Multi-Material Lightweight Joining & Forming: Created Specifically For The Manufacturing Job Functions
REDUCING COSTS. REDUCING CYCLE TIME. JOINING MIXED MATERIAL IN HIGH VOLUME.
Regardless of how different the vehicle design is, how advanced the manufacturing plant is and how large the budget is, every large scale OEM in the US, Europe and Asia is working towards every single one of these goals.
Every OEM is researching and testing and piloting to figure out three key things:
Which joining and forming techniques deliver the highest performance at the lowest costs on different advanced lightweight materials
In which parts of the vehicle can these techniques be most cost effectively applied
How can they be implemented quickly and cost effectively into the production line
Everyone has their own answers, but with technology and understanding advancing at break neck speed each year, what was the best today is rarely the best tomorrow.
THE US-WIDE WEIGHT REDUCTION DRIVE ADVANCES AT PACE
The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the Department of Transportation's National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) are issuing final rules to extend the National Program to further reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and improve fuel economy for model years 2017 through 2025 light-duty vehicles. These are projected to result in an average industry fleet wide level of 163 grams/mile of carbon dioxide (CO2) in model year 2025 (equivalent to 54.5 mpg vs. 29 mpg in 2013). With these regulations in place, OEMs are under increasing pressure to further explore all possible methods and strategies that will help ensure these stringent standards are cost effectively met. OEMs have ranked "meeting of the fuel efficiency and emission targets" as the top challenge that they presently face.
THE INTEGRAL OEM-LED JOINING AND FORMING KNOWLEDGE EXCHANGE RETURNS TO DETROIT - 2ND YEAR RUNNING

This presentation observes the concepts of Lean in Automotive from the spectacular recovery of Porsche, in the 90's. It then provides some thoughts on how Lean Thinking could be applied in IT. More importantly, Lean thinking is close to the agile efforts in IT and similar leadership traits should be applied.
This talk will be updated soon to include the further story of Porsche and their product development.

UC 2015 - How Government Departments are improving agile working in a secure ...Kahootz
This presentation was used to explain how the UK Government has used a Cloud First policy to break away from the need to commission “special for government” IT in order to benefit from innovative, and more affordable, cloud commodity services served over the public internet. This has meant a fresh look at security accreditation and adoption of COTS applications that can be deployed in minutes and not months or sometimes years. Cloud collaboration services, that have the correct security credentials, have become very popular and John will provide case study examples and best practice advice as to how public and private sector organisations have introduced new and effective collaborative ways of working.
The automotive industry is experiencing disruption everywhere! Today’s vehicles are computers on wheels. There are more “lines of code” in today’s cars than a Boeing 777. According to McKinsey and Company, today’s connected cars create up to 25GB of data per hour. Moreover, OEM’s manufacturers are moving towards a “mobility model”, data warehousing, autonomous vehicles, subscription services and technology integrators while technology companies are also entering the space. Will you and your business be ready, willing and able to thrive or even survive the auto industry’s mass disruption? By reviewing this presentation, you will learn about the major technology disruptions occurring in the automotive industry and walk away with at least five ideas on what your business can do to survive and thrive!
