Complements: Objects of Verbs
        Action verbs sometimes need
   complements, called direct and indirect
     objects to complete their meanings!
Direct Objects

• Is a word or group of words that names
 the receiver of the action of the verb.


• Example: I can drive a car.
• Which word is “being driven”? Car, right?
To find the direct object:

• First, find the subject and the verb.
• Second, ask the question “Action verb”
  what or whom?.
• The word (or phrase) that answers the
  question is your direct object!
Here are some examples:

• I bought a present.
  Ask “I bought whom or what?”
  Answer: present
• You can see the sunset from here.
  Ask “You can see what or whom?”
  Answer: sunset
Indirect Objects:

• A word or group of words that tells to/for
  whom or what an action is performed.
• It usually comes between a verb and the
  direct object.
• Example: I gave Sam a present.
  To Whom did I give the present? Sam,
  right?
To find indirect objects:

• First, find the action verb.
• Second, ask “Action verb” to or for whom?
Example:
Mom lent me her purse.
Ask, “Mom lent to or for whom?” Me, right?
