 Mugo is a character in a novel “A Grain of Wheat”
written by Ngugi Wa Thiong’o.
 Ngugi Wa Thiong’o is a Kenyan writer, and this novel
was published in 1967.
 Yashpal Sharma has played the role of Lakha in movie
“Lagaan”.
 The movie was directed by Ashutosh Gowariker, and
was released in 2001.
 Both novel and movie has same theme of fighting for
freedom against the colonizers. The reason and the
way is different.
 In novel all are fighting for the freedom of nation and
in movie all are fighting for freedom from tax.
 In novel villagers have chosen the path of violent
movements, while in movie they are fighting by
Cricket game.
They both have cheated their own
people, who trusted them.
 Lakha has father and
though he is in
colonial phase of
nation he has not
suffered any mental
or physical abuse.
 Mugo don’t has parents. He
has been raised by his aunt.
He has suffered mental and
physucal abuse at detention
camp and also at his aunt’s
home.

Comparison between Mugo from "A Grain of Wheat" and Lakha from "Lagaan"

  • 2.  Mugo is a character in a novel “A Grain of Wheat” written by Ngugi Wa Thiong’o.  Ngugi Wa Thiong’o is a Kenyan writer, and this novel was published in 1967.  Yashpal Sharma has played the role of Lakha in movie “Lagaan”.  The movie was directed by Ashutosh Gowariker, and was released in 2001.  Both novel and movie has same theme of fighting for freedom against the colonizers. The reason and the way is different.  In novel all are fighting for the freedom of nation and in movie all are fighting for freedom from tax.  In novel villagers have chosen the path of violent movements, while in movie they are fighting by Cricket game.

  • 4.  Lakha has father and though he is in colonial phase of nation he has not suffered any mental or physical abuse.  Mugo don’t has parents. He has been raised by his aunt. He has suffered mental and physucal abuse at detention camp and also at his aunt’s home. 1
