Comparing The Five Blue Zones
Blue Zones are described by a wide variety of characteristics that affect the inhabitants of these
zones lifestyles' and the environments of the world's longest–lived people. There are five blue zones
consisting of Okinawa Japan, Sardinia Italy, Nicoya Costa Rica, Ikaria Greece, and Loma Linda
California. These five places were first discovered by Dan Buettner when he wrote an article for
National Geographic about "The Secrets of a Long Life." These places were chosen by their way of
life and characteristics that help them live longer and healthier lives. These five zones have many
similarities but also some differences that lead to prosperous lives. They all are very family oriented,
they eat healthy with a plant–based diet, and they have

Dan Buettner's Three Blue Zones
In the TED Talk "How to Live to be 100+", Dan Buettner talks about lifestyles that are helping
people live to be 100+. According to the Danish Twin Study, biology only factors into 10 percent of
how long we live, the other 90 percent it based off lifestyle (Buettner 2009). Dan Buettner and his
colleagues found three Blue Zones to try to find what types of lifestyles these people are living to
become centenarians. Blue Zones are places where people live longer than the majority of people in
the world. The Blue Zones are in Sardinia, Okinawa, and Loma Linda, California. They found
similarities in their lifestyles that help them to live to be 100+. Those similarities are: they do not do
strenuous exercise, have a period of down time, have a word ... Show more content on

People in the Blue Zones put their families first. They take care of everyone in the family, ranging
from young children to aging parents. People in the Blue Zone not only care for their aging parents
but also treat them like celebrities. Dan Buettner (qtd in Gulli 2008) emphasizes that "A stop in any
local taverna reveals just how much glory these seniors get. 'Usually we see swimsuit calendars'
inside North American sports bars, says Dan Buettner, but when he was in Sardinia, 'it was
Centenarian of the Month calendars.'" Also, their relationship with their community is also very
important. Those surrounding themselves with the right people allows them to add on many years to
their life. Buettner (2009) states, "They all tend to belong to a faith–based community, which is
worth between four and 14 extra years of life expectancy if you do it four times a month. And the
biggest thing here is they also belong to the right tribe. They were either born into or they
proactively surround themselves with the right people," they purposely surround themselves with
the right group of people in their lives. The relationships in the Blue Zone societies can be
implemented into the lifestyles of the people in Cohort Two; however, many of their ideas cannot be
implemented in our lifestyles

Response: According to Findings of Fact, Fruitville Road was historically aligned with First Street
until the 1980's. At the stated time, the State of Florida enacted a six–lane widening which initiated
realignment of Fruitville causing it to converge with the former Third Street that was located west of
Lime Avenue. During this transition, the State of Florida initiated eminent domain action, which
removed a triangular portion of the subject parcel on its north end, which left the remaining site at
an angle. The resulting lot configuration was left oddly shaped, which makes conventional standards
difficult to meet. In addition to the oddly shape lot, the City Arborist has identified large oak trees
that must be preserved. In complying with the minimum setback requirements, the trees identified
will have to be removed.

National Geographic Explorer Dan Buettner
National Geographic Explorer Dan Buettner introduced us to areas in the world where people are
living longer and healthier lives. Dan Buettner and his team of researchers took us to four different
areas around the world known as The Blue Zones. They uncovered the secrets to health and
longevity and told us how we can apply these habits in our lives. The four Blue Zones are:
Okinawa Islands, Japan
Barbagia region of Sardinia, Italy
Loma Linda, California
Nicoya Peninsula, Costa Rica
We learned about these people living in the Blue Zones through their personal stories, as we were
brought into their homes and learned about their lifestyle and what they feel were the best practices
in health and longevity. We were introduced to ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
First, I wanted to mention some of the longevity secrets that were mentioned in the area of Sardinia.
They believe in eating a plant–based diet consisting of fresh fruits and vegetables, and they believe
that drinking goat's milk can fight against heart disease and cognitive disorders such as Alzheimers.
They take daily walks and enjoying with family and friends and of course the daily glass of red wine
are just a few other secrets. They value family connections here in Sardinia; most families live
together, from the parents, children and the grandchildren (Buettner, 2008).
In Okinawa, they enjoy being active and being outdoors in the sunshine, gardening and enjoying the
company of their "moai (circle of friends). Having a good attitude and what they like to call the
"ikigai", which is what they say, gives them a purpose in life and what helps them get up every day.
They also believe in eating a plant–based diet, the consume a lot of tofu and rarely eat fish. What I
found very interesting that they eat more sweet potatoes, and they consume the spice, turmeric,
which has been linked to healthier hearts (Buettner, 2008.)
Loma Linda residents also believe in eating more plant based diets, eating in moderation, eating an
early dinner, drinking plenty of water, exercising to maintain a healthy weight, and as we have seen
in Sardinia and Okinawa, spending quality time with family and friends.

What Is A Blue Zone
Secrets to a Long and Healthy Life, in 2012 the resrearcher Dan Buettner traveled around the world
to answer the question that riddle the doctors about why the people who lives in some part of world
lives longer than others? Then he collected his researches and lessons and took them to USA.
What Is A Blue Zone?
This the name of his project, the researcher beginning to describe the places of the country he list it
where the people lives in such as: geographically defined, area and demography have the highest or
lowest rate of middle age mortality.
Tell us about Ikaria, in Greece, "the island where people forgot to die."

It's not a food, is it?
????
Given the anti–social implications, I was perturbed to find out that the common denominator of all
Blue Zone diets boils down to one word: beans.
The people who eats a lot of meats they will dead faster about 70 percentage than other. A nd the
blue zone is a place to make beans have a good taste for protein.
The United States is a tough nut to crack, given the preponderance of fast foods outlets and wall–to–
wall TV adverts for pizza. What are the biggest challenges?
Fast food has become something exaggerated can not handle it, and governments take from this
social problem a personal decision, where most of the world's population is eating these foods
instead of healthy foods.
What lessons of Blue Zone living can our readers bring home?
Firstly, Blue zone that give us instructions on food Guidance. Secondly, we have to take a look at
social network. Thirdly, all of us should have a clear vision about purpose in life.
You must have had some wonderful times going around the world to these different Blue Zones.

Social Networks, Spirituality, And Physical Activity
Dan Buettner's (2009) claim that Blue Zones can be found in the world where there is a history of
people living a longer life than normal influenced by lifestyle choices such as diet, social networks,
spirituality, and physical activity is questionable. A few of these blue zones that
Buettner (2009) researched are Sardinia, Okinawa, and The Seventh–Day Adventists in Loma
Linda, California. These communities are located in different parts of the world and have very
different lifestyles, and yet the community members seem to have a longer lifespan than most.
Studying the way that the people of these communities live their lives daily has given us a better
understanding of Buettner's views.

which states, "It could be speculated that these changes may have brought substantial health benefits
to this particular aging group, which was in need of a nutrient –rich food at this specific time in life,

scholarly journal explains that the longevity in
Sardinia may be a result to only a specific age group in time, due to a change in diet because of
ecomomic changes in the community. The new diet adds vegetables, fruit, and a moderate meat

The Benefits Of Blue Zones
All around the world, there are areas called Blue Zones, where the life expectancy is higher than it is
in America. The habits the people in these areas do are not only accomplishable in their zone, but
also in other parts of the world. In regards to the community of Stafford, Virginia, it is more than
likely possible for my peers to adopt some of the habits regularly practiced by the Blue Zoners. On
the right side of the world, there is a Blue Zone in Sardinia, Italy called the Nuoro province. Here,
the Sardinians consume "a type of cheese made from grass–fed animals so the cheese is high in
Omega–3 fatty acids instead of Omega–6 fatty acids from corn–fed animals" (6:05–6:15). This
simple habit in their diet has the ability to extend their life expectancy, and can be easily adopted by

Like Italy, the people of Okinawa have a very specific and focused diet. They prevent themselves
from overeating by "eating off of smaller plates, so they tend to eat fewer calories at every sitting"
(8:30–8:40). This habit is possible in Stafford if families began serving food at counters instead of at
the dinner table, and not going back for seconds. Obesity and overeating are large problems in
America, so a good way to fight it is by starting in small communities like Stafford. Apart from the
way the Okinawans eat, the way the elderly live at the time of their "retirement" is important. They
use the word "ikigai" as opposed to retirement, which means "the reason for which you wake up in
the morning" (10:25–10:40). In other words, "ikigai" refers to one's sense of purpose. This habit is
beneficial because it allows them to have something to look forward to everyday. To continue this
habit in Stafford, the people in the community should be taught the meaning of the word and be
reminded that by just looking forward each day, about seven years could be added to their life.

Living to be 100 years old might become the new norm in the future. In Dan Buettner's TED talk,
How to Live to be 100+, he gives his audience several examples of ways to increase their lifespan.
Using what he calls "Blue Zones" as examples of communities where people live to be 100 or older,
Buettner points out some key elements that allow the people in these "Blue Zones" to live for such a
long time. Having a form of daily exercise, eating less and making healthier food choices, having
family and friends close by, and even being a part of a religion all factor into having a longer
lifespan. Growing old, even if you are bed ridden or too sick to remain very active, people can take
heart in knowing that there are plenty of things to look forward ... Show more content on

Dan Buettner's TED talk is informative, explaining ways to live a longer, happier life by making
smart food choices and exercising on a daily basis. Even seemingly small efforts can be beneficial
and make a big difference over time. While some of Buettner's points did not withstand close
scrutiny, his overall message was a good one. The fact that people can extend UPS AND DOWNS
OF LIVE BEYOND 100 7 their lifespan by making better choices seems to be evidenced by those
who live in what Buettner calls the "Blue Zones." People are striving every day to improve their
quality of life. By being fitter and healthier, they can extend their lifespans. While there are some
aspects about people's lives that cannot be controlled, people can still make their lives more
enjoyable by making deliberate lifestyle choices like the ones Buettner suggests. People have this
idea that when they get older their lives become less enjoyable even if they do all of Buettner's
suggestions. I believe it is all about how people look at the situations they are in and choose to enjoy
the good things in life and cherish them while they

The Blue Zone By Dan Buettner
There are certain parts in the world called Blue Zones. Dan Buettner and a team of researchers
including a National Geographic team searched all over the world looking for these Blue Zones
what they called the Blue Zones study. Blue Zones are the hot spots for longevity. Individuals living
in these particular Blue Zones live to be over 100 years old. The overall life expectancy for
Americans is about 77 years of age. The life expectancy for a woman tends to be approximately five
years longer than a male. There are four hot spots and they all have something in common and
something different than the others. Buettner and his team researched the Blue Zones and their
similarities and differences for weeks.
The first Blue Zone is Okinawa, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Elders provide wisdom, love and motivation for all younger ones. Like the Okinawans, Sardinians
have a plant based diet using sheep cheese, goat's milk and meat as an accent not the main course.
The third Blue Zone is Loma Linda, California. In the Loma Linda community they are Adventists.
They volunteer which reduces stress and creates a sense of purpose. It makes an activity for
Adventists with the same interests and skills. Volunteering connects them, bringing them closer and
closer every time they work together. They are a very tight group of people. They take time to spend
with their friends and for potluck socials. They have groups like Okinawan moais. Adventists find a
place to observe the Sabbath every week from Friday to Saturday night. They focus only on their
family, friends, nature, and, most importantly, God. They maintain a healthy body weight which
helps keep cholesterol levels and blood pressure down. Some of the vegetables and fruits they eat
reduce the chance of lung, ovarian and prostate cancer. They eat lots of nuts which also reduce the
risk of heart disease and increase their life expectancy by two years. Adventists eat big breakfasts,
lunch and then a light dinner which helps with sleep and lowers BMI.
The last Blue Zone is Nicoya, Costa Rica. Nicoyans get a healthy amount of sunlight and Vitamin D
everyday, making the chance for osteoporosis and heart disease lower. Like the Adventists they have

What Is Comfort Zone Essay
Comfort zone is a situation where one feels safe and at ease. It is a type of behaviour that keeps us at
a steadily Low anxiety level. Something that we do all the time, like taking the bus to school,
watching television programmes and checking out social media platforms are part of our comfort
zones. These everyday activities that we are used to will not make us feel anxious and uneasy. We
like to stay in our comfort zone even though we are bored of being in the comfort zone. When we
see the struggle that others go through to achieve something in life , we will be scared of the
numerous challenges that we may face. However, it is important that we leave our comfort zone for
self improvement so as to achieve success.
Getting out of our comfort zone is crucial and it will benefit us. One of the benefits is that we will
find it easier to push our boundaries in the future. Once we start stepping out of our comfort zone, it
gets easier to learn new skills and gain new knowledge over time. To illustrate my point, in order to
communicate with my Korean classmate, I tried learning Korean. Although we could communicate
in English, I challenged ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

helps me brainstorm , see old problems in a new light and tackle the challenges we face with energy.

They live fairly very basic lives with structure, faith and only necessities. They encounter daily
physical activities from their daily chores or walks that keeps them fit. Very green/plant based diets,

Compared to the blue zone communities where they have a basic lifestyle habits, moving naturally,
and right outlook, eating wisely, and connecting. With all this being said I don't believe that the
people of Fredericksburg could adopt any of the habits practiced by the blue zone communities.
Moving naturally and eating wisely to the blue zone communities means to do a natural physical
activity and eat a natural plant based diet. Unlike here in Fredericksburg the most walking we do is
to and from our cars and the walking inside of where we go. We drive everywhere we need to go,
removing the walking from our day. Even our food comes from the market and is mainly processed,
taking out the work from farming. Many would rather go to a restaurant and have the food made for
us rather than we make our own. Many of us would not last if we had to walk everywhere we
needed to go or last a single day harvesting food. The blue zone communities also don't over eat,
they eat until they are about 80% full then walk away.
Unlike most people here where they eat until they are completely full.

Blue Zone Culture
The biggest difference between the Blue Zones and the Rest of America is their culture. In these
areas, individuals tend to be naturally more active and eat healthier. In all three areas, they eat a
mainly plant based diet in combination with other fresh, healthy foods like whole wheat bread, nuts,
beans, and cheese full of Omega–3 fatty acids. These communities also find natural ways to keep
them active – walking wherever they go, gardening, bike riding – and most importantly finding
ways to stay active if they choose to retire. These cultures also tend to have a social system that
finds pride in their elders, so aging adults are surrounded with family and friends. They also pride
taking time to relax and destress reducing stress hormones like cortisol. From the Blue Zone type of
behaviors, I try to be active. With class and work, I do not always get to get out from the desk, but I
go to the gym four or five days a week. I lift weights every day and do some sort of cardio at least
three days a week. I try to ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This perspective uses different aspects of biology, psychology, and social processes to explain and
understand aging. The biological aspects of aging would obviously highlight that healthy, active
individuals with good genetics would age more successfully. The cultures of the Blue Zones
encourage healthy habits which help increase the life span. Healthy habits can also help slow down,
or even stop, some of the processes of primary and secondary aging – these factors include natural
and illness related changes. Cultures that promote cleaner eating habits and active lifestyles will
naturally have a better chance of having healthy and happy elderly. Blue Zones tend to be small,
close communities – since they are so small and tight knit families may tend to stay in the area for
generations. Having communities with several generations of a family line would lead to better
genetics for that family

Not only is it important to have healthy friends and family, but it's important to keep in touch with
them. Blue zones are areas around the world where it isn't uncommon for people to live past 100.
These areas include Sardinia, Italy; Ikaria, Greece; Okinawa, Japan; Nicoya, Costa Rica; and Loma

the biggest similarities being diet and socialization. Almost all centenarians (people who live over

In the future, doctors will be able to expand on this with the growing field of proteomics.
Proteomics is the study of all the proteins that can be found in a cell and, therefore, an organism.
Amino acids are the chemical units of proteins and are considered to be the building blocks of life.
They are important in almost every function a cell does within itself and the entire organism. Blood
circulates through our entire bodies which means the proteins in our blood have reflected everything
that is happening in the human body. This means an infection in a person's foot, can be seen through
the proteins in blood drawn from the arm. The potential power of proteomics is mind–blowing. With
proteomics, doctors can find any disease, disorder, or any other problem just by examining a single
drop of blood. Instead of running dozens of different tests to find out what is wrong with someone,
all a doctor has to do is draw the patient's blood, send it to the lab, and wait for the results (Agus
110–112). This will save a lot of time and money for the patient as well as helping him/her improve
her medical condition. Hopefully, in the years to come, scientists and doctors can finally combine

The Effects Of Video On Our Lives
In the video How to Live to be One Hundred Plus the main goal is trying to find the optimal lifestyle
of longevity and come up with a formula for longevity. Dan Buettner starts talking about three blue
zones: Sardinia, Okinawa, and Loma Linda, CA. The first blue zone is in Sardinia, only up in the
highlands with an area called the Nuoro province. This part of Sardinia has an oldest male society,
where 102 year olds ride bikes to work and chop wood. Since the land is so infertile, people in this
area are mostly shepherds, which means their exercise is regular low–intensity physical activity.
Their diet is mostly plant based and consists of unleavened whole wheat bread called carta musica,
cheese made from grass fed animals high in omega 3 fatty acids, and Cannonau, a wine with three
times the level of polyphenols. In this society, age and knowledge is thought of very highly, and is
celebrated through a centenarian of the month calendar. Keeping family around is also a big part of
the culture and can add an extra 6 years of life expectancy, which is also known as the grandmother
effect.
The second blue zone is Okinawa, which is made up of 161 small islands and is 800 miles south of
Tokyo. The northern part of the main island of Okinawa is ground zero for world longevity and has
the oldest female population. This society has the longest disability–free life expectancy in the
world. Their diet consists of a plant–based diet, full of vegetables with lots of color, and they eat

Reflection Paper On Blue Zone
1.1.) Blue zone is parts of the world that have people that have a long life span, healthy life while
not trying to be healthy. It is important to learn about blue zones to understand what can be done to

reason to get up every day from your bed without thinking "why is god waking me up today" "Down
Shift" is to de–stress and experience what the world has to offer such as the sunset, spending time

4.1) I am very interested in eating more plant based foods, I have even thought about going on a
vegetarian diet but one thing that does concern me here in the U.S is soy. Many reports have shown
that most of the plants especially soy beans are genetically modified and can cause a lot of health
issues if the tofu is unfermented. I would like to find some great Tofu and try it. If I enjoy the taste. I
may even, consider going on to a full plant based diet. I would have to outweigh the cost as well of
course. 5.1) I am currently working on my associates of nursing for I can help people. I have tried to
find what the purpose of my life is and decided that until I truly find it that I can help people. I love
helping people and feeling needed. Feeling needed it what gets me out of bed most of the time. The
only thing that I can see besides being in the medical field to feel a purpose to breath is to just
explore and see what the world has to offer. My long term goal is to have both of the worlds. I plan
to hold a solid job being a flight nurse while taking time every year to see nature.
6.1) Finding people who can share the same values as I do is nice, it makes sense to spend time with
people who you share a lot in common with and that will support you on good habits you may have.

How Can I Live?
(left align) Savannah Siebenhaar 24 October 2014 Health 110–95/I96 Video Assignment
(center) "How to Live to Be 100"
(Double Spaced, 12 pt. Times New Roman)
In today 's world, everyone seems to be asking the same question: "How can I live longer?" In a
video entitled "How to Live to Be 100," Dan Buettner gives a presentation that attempts to answer
this question. In the presentation, he explains a few myths about longevity before discussing three
"Blue Zones" that exist in the world, where living to be over one hundred years old is most
common. This information was gathered through research by National Geographic and the National
Institute on Aging in which they discovered many facts about ... Show more content on

The term that he gives for this concept is "procreative success," and he explains that this mostly
involves genetics. The second myth that Buettner discusses is the myth that treatments can help a
person live longer. He says that this myth is false because there are several things that can age us.
For example, the thirty five trillion cells that we have in our bodies are replaced every eight years.
When this happens, the damage that is done builds up over time, which causes aging. "That 's why a
sixty five year old person is aging at a rate of about one hundred and twenty five times faster than a
twelve year old person," says Buettner. According to the video, it is not possible to stop this natural
process with treatments. These two myths show that most Americans have been misinformed about
the process of aging and the way to longevity.
The next subject that Buettner discussed was the three "Blue Zones" where more people live to be
over one hundred and the life expectancy is higher than any other locations in the world. The first
"Blue Zone" is located off the coast of Italy, in the Nuoro Province of Sardinia. These people have
many habits that make it possible for them to live well over one hundred years old. Some of these
habits include physical activity related to their jobs as shepherds, plant–based diets that include
special cheeses, breads, and

Metaphors That Poem Means
When writing this poem, it was not an easy easy task but not too hard. When writing metaphorically
and especially a topic where one has strong connections with or lots of knowledge, it's like a journal
where we write our feelings. Likewise, I wrote the poem like that. I wanted it to hide the true
meanings beneath the phrases that the reader may be confused about. However, when uncovering
the meaning it will be much easier to understand and I hope the readers will understand the
metaphors used in the poem is the best way to portray the theme.
I initially started with the color blue to base my poem upon. I brained stormed the different concrete
example of blue things. Then I chose the most symbolic and the ones that carry a lot of emotion with

and belonging. However, the speaker takes the jeans off to represent that he or she will enter
somewhere out of their comfort zone. Hence, jeans are replaced with a suit where a more formal
atmosphere is born. When writing this section of the poem I had in mind of a person going to an
interview, which is out of their comfort zone and they are frightened. However, they don't realize
their afraidness until they see their reflection the mirror which transitions to the third stanza. The
more dark and sad side of death takes place. I mention "two pools" which are the color of their eye
reflecting their fear. I created an alliteration, "bite blue" so the reader can slow down and understand
why the speaker's lips turn blue when they bit on it. When people their blood does not circulate so it
ends up turning blue which is the association I wanted to come up with. Similarly, the last line of the
stanza states the blood is churning which indicated the rush of blood representing fear and symbolic

The Importance Of Perseverance
"Perseverance is failing 19 times then succeeding the 20th time" Julie Andrews. This means that you
are going to hit many bumps in the road but there is always times where you can push through and
make the most of their life. As defined by Dictionary.com perseverance is a "steady persistence in a
course of action, a purpose, a state, etc., especially in spite of difficulties, obstacles, or
discouragement." The synonyms are "Dedication" , " Determination" , and "Diligence". The
antonyms for this word are "Apathy", "Cowardice" , and "Weakness" . This is important because
people need to persevere to get through life's tough challenges and make the most of it even when
times are tough. In the real world this looks like people trying to get through the day even though
money is tight. This doesn't not look like people just sitting around not doing anything to try to help
themselves if they don't have job. The first example where perseverance is shown is that when in the
book Glory Road Coach Don Haskins was scrimmaging at college and he is left in all day with no
breaks. Later when he got home he took off his sock and the skin on the ball of his foot fell off
because he ran so much. The next day he goes to the athletic trainer's room and tapes the skin back
on his feet. The second example where perseverance is shown is when the Japanese–Americans
were persecuted during WWII based on their nationality and people lost their jobs, businesses, and
were left with nothing and were

In The Skin Of A Lion Character Analysis
In order for humans to be able to create meaningful relationships with one another, they need to be
able to communicate with each other. If individuals want to create relations with one another, they
need to be able to understand each other. They also need to take the initiative to figure out others,
and be able to communicate and connect with each other. However, the only way that you can
understand others is if you relate with one another, in order to build relations and be comfortable
around each other. In order for you to be able to connect with other people and have relations with
others people, we need to leave our comfort zone and relate to other people. Whether it be learning a
new language or moving to a new place, just like the individuals in the second source and third
source were able to do.
In the story of "In the Skin of a Lion," the main character is Patrick who lived amongst other
immigrants and did not recognize their language and culture because he kept to himself. However,
when he took the initiative to learn the Macedonian word for Iguana he was able to communicate
with others at the fruit stall, and in the future he was able to be close to some new people he didn't
even know existed. This source shows how if you take action upon your desires to make relations
you will infact be able to make new friends, just like Patrick was able to make new relations with
the people around him. Patrick was able to leave his comfort zone of keeping to himself to

The Blue Planet Open Ocean Pelagic Zone
In this episode of the BBC documentary series, "The Blue Planet: Open Ocean," we were able to
explore the abundance and complications of the open ocean, the pelagic zone. Over 60% of our
planet is covered by the ocean, yet the deep sea is largely still unknown. We know more about the
moon than what we know about the deep ocean. The temperature and the level of sunlight decrease
as the depth increases. The ocean may appear uniform from the surface, but there is several layers to
the ocean. The pelagic zone contains the most area of the open ocean. The zone includes everything
except for the coastal waters and the sea floor. However, even within this area, there are variation

The closest to the surface is the epipelagic subzone stretches to about 200m. This zone has enough
sunlight and nutrients for bigger marine creatures like tuna, sharks, giant jellyfish and predator
fishes. The second subzone, the mesopelagic, also known as the twilight zone, with the depth of
200m to 1000m; this zone has barely sunlight. The insufficient of sunlight prohibits organisms to
perform photosynthesis in the twilight zone. Surviving in the twilight zone is about seeing and not
being seen. These organisms need to be able to see their prey, but they should not be spotted by their
predators. The next subzone is the bathypelagic ranging from 1000 to 4000 m, containing
bioluminescent marine organisms which create light, like hatchet fish and squid. Below 150m,
photosynthesis is impossible; hence there are only animals and no plants in this region and below.
The animals living in the bathypelagic zone solely rely on detritus for food or on eating other
animals. At this depth and pressure, the animals most commonly found are fish, mollusks,
crustaceans, and jellyfish.Red, black and bioluminescent animals in this appear as completely black
to others since there is very little to no light penetration at this depth. Following the bathypelagic is

Does Virginia have to potential to have residents who live to be 100+?
Mankind has always had an infatuation with the concept of living forever or immortality. We've had
expeditions to search of the fountain of youth within Florida; as well as Linus Paulin thinking he
found the key to immortality through vitamins, and later dying from same cancer he claimed
vitamins cured (Offit, "The Vitamin Myth: Why We Think We Need Supplements."). Now author
and public speaker Dan Buettner found a new lead towards living a longer, healthier life. Buettner
tracked down areas that he dubbed Blue Zone, a geographic area of the world where people live
measurably longer lives, and thinks these areas hold the key to living a longer life. But does Virginia
have potential to hold one of these Blue Zones? No, I don't predict that any community or
neighborhood in Virginia could adopt these lifestyles and or cultures. Most Virginia areas lack a
sense of community, aren't too social, practice lazy habits, and don't typically have a strong "green"
or healthy diet. During this paper I expect to represent that point and why these issues can be
connected to our society's standards and expectations. So let's dive into what's currently in the way.

That being a diet consistent of Vegetables and Grains. He emphasised this with the Okinawa
Prefecture, Japan blue zone and their high "green" and grain diets. It's fitting he picked Okinawa,
Japan as their marketing and social stigma towards health is completely different from our own. Our
society has a extremely skewed perception on what it means to be healthy. With convenience being
placed above everything else, our community lost that easy access and social push to eat right. Even
the food industry reflect this dilemma pricing salads at a higher price than junk food. This creates a
strange paradigm of people who can't afford to eat healthy. A message absent in

Buettner How To Be 100 Analysis
In Dan Buettner's "How to live to be 100+" TED talk, longevity and three major 'blue zones' around
the world are discussed. The blue zones of the Nuoro Province, Okinawa, and the prairies of
Minnesota are the three focused on in the talk. Their lifestyles are talked about and it is made clear
that there is no secret formula when it comes to longevity. Not every practice of each blue zone is
touched on because many are societal changes that have been passed down and kept up for years
and take about that long to recreate in other areas. The three major takeaways from this talk as well
as some credible online sources are that fitness, friendships, as it relates to maintaining happiness

Diet
The last major reason Buettner uses in his talk that backs up longevity is a better diet. One approach
to eating better would be to try implementing the "MIND" diet which consists of increasing your
grain, vegetable, and fish intake, while decreasing the amount of red meats and sweets consumed.
This particular diet focuses on decreasing the risk of Alzheimer's, which is a major cause of death in
those over the age of one–hundred (Health.com, 2016). Two approaches that are more permanent
than something like a diet that usually has a start and finish date are to have smaller portions of food
and to stop eating when you are eighty percent full. The way the Okinawan blue zone has made
smaller portions the "norm" is by eating off of smaller plates as opposed to our average american
size plates. Alongside eating fewer calories, a three– thousand year old adage, "Hara, Hatchi, Bu,"
created by Confucius, reinforces to stop eating when you are eighty percent full before every meal
(Buettner, 2009).

Blue Zones
Blue Zones is an anthropological concept that describes the characteristic lifestyles and the
environments of the world's longest–lived people. They are the places in the world where people live
longer and healthier than anywhere else on earth. The four blue zones he talked about were the
Italian island of sardinia; Okinawa, Japan; Loma Linda, California; and Costa Rica's isolated Nicoya
Peninsula. One of the common factors all these places had were the eating styles. All of them had a
plant based diet. They all also lived in tribes whom were basically considered family just in case
something would have happened to them or their family, these tribe members would be the backup
plan and are the people who take care of them. So there social engagement levels were all high due
to these tribe member always being with them and being with one another. All blue zones had a no

they always did something active. By active i dont mean running a mile or going to gym to ... Show

Once you have decided on storage and activities it is time to map out your space. You can begin by
sketching your space out on a piece of paper. There are several details to take into account when
determining where each zone should be located. Natural habits and preferences will be an indicator
or where a certain zone will be. If you tend to throw your mail on the counter as you walk in the
door that may be an ideal place for a basket to store mail and paperwork. The relationships of the
activities need to be considered. A TV zone and a reading zone should be put at opposites ends of a
room so that people can utilize the space simultaneously. The configurations and restrictions of the
room also need to be taken into account. When you are setting aside time in your schedule, it is
important to estimate how much time the organization process will take. Most rooms will take one
to one and one–half days to complete. Blocking out the time on your calendar will be required so
you can create an effective work schedule. In conclusion, after researching my problem I realize that
I need to develop a plan of action to organize my home. I will accomplish this by realistically
analyzing the time that is needed and block it out on my calendar. I will establish zones in each
room and set up storage solutions for the supplies needed in each zone. Researching my problem has

Ted Buettner: Blue Zones
Ted Buettner talks about blue zones and the people who live in there, and the way the people live to
be so old. The people living in these places mainly eat a plant based diet, have some form of
physical activity every day, and have a reason to get up each day. I do not think that it is very likely
that my peers would be able to adopt to this kind of living each and every day for the rest of their
life. I do have some peers that I know, that could adopt to this kind of living, but the majority of my

Ted Buettner says that the first thing is "none of them exercise, at least the way we think of
exercise." The way they exercise is that they have some sort of physical movement each day, just as
walking to store or getting up and down throughout the day. Many people that I know never go out
for a walk, my peers usually play video games and do not get much physical movement in the day.
Another thing they all have in common is how they eat. Ted Buettner says "There's no longevity
diet." People that live in the blue zones usually have a little bit of wine to drink each day, they tend
to have a plant based diet, and they have strategies to keep from overeating. My peers do not have
any strategies for overeating; they will grab as much food as they can and go seat on the couch and
eat all the food. Overeating is an easy thing to do living in the United States, when you go out and

What Are Blue Zones?
Introduction Blue Zones are an idea used to recognize a demographic and/or geographic region of
the world where individuals live quantifiable much longer lives. There are five blue zones on the
planet and the general population who live within these zones live to be more than 100+ years
without anyone else's input. When I say independent from anyone else I mean they don't have
machines helping them breath or specialists coming in to keep an eye on them. These are ordinary
individuals living their lives and may have figured out how to help other people live their lives

The twenty percent hole between not being eager and feeling full could be the contrast between
getting fitter or putting the weight on. Individuals in the Blue Zones eat their littlest supper in the
late evening or early night and afterward they don't eat anymore for the rest of the day. Plant Slant
Beans, including guava, dark, soy and lentils, are the foundation of most centenarian eating
methodologies. On the basis of reports from the mid–19th to mid–20th century, meat consumption
by the rural population rarely exceeded two to four servings per month, (4). Serving sizes are three
to four oz., about the span of the deck or cards. Likewise, another trick they do is they eat on smaller
plates. Something else is they don't eat family style, where you can simply continually eat as much
as you want. Some of them serve at the counter, then put the nourishment away so you don't overeat
or snack on afterward.
Moderate alcohol intake, especially wine. Most of the people in blue zones have wine at five.
Individuals in every single Blue Zone (with the exception of Adventists) beverage liquor respectably
and frequently. Moderate consumers' outlast non–consumers. The trap is to drink one to two glasses
for each day, with companions and/or with sustenance. The wine is ideally Sardinian Cannonau
wine, which has three times the level of polyphenols more than general wine. The polyphenols are
avoidance of degenerative maladies, for example, malignancy and cardiovascular ailments.

Comfort Zone Definition Zones
Someone once said "Great things never come from comfort zones." That is basically saying that if
people have a comfort zone they won't fully be able to enjoy the things that make them happy. With
comfort zones it holds people back from becoming the best. The dictionary states that comfort zones
are "a place or situation where one feels safe or at ease without stress". "Relief", "soothe", and
"ease" are just some of the synonyms of this phrase. "Discomfort", "stress", and "unhappiness" are
some of the antonyms of this word. Comfort zones make one feel happy or safe, and they tend to go
back to that place or state of mind when times get hard. Most people don't have a very large comfort
zone which means they are scared to do stuff that scares them, they don't take risks. All of these
people were forced to go out of their comfort zone because they didn't believe in what was going on,
they wanted to make a change, or just simply because they wanted to be remembered as something
more. There are more good things about not having a comfort zone vs having a comfort zone. The
good thing is that people who don't have a comfort zone never are afraid to do anything they're not
comfortable with. The people that have a comfort zone are afraid to do anything. The first example
is Temple Grandin, she was a woman with autism that was bullied and she had to figure how to get
out of her comfort zone. When she did that she wasnt afraid to do anything. The second example is

Analysis Of The Song ' Crazy Blues '

Professor Johnson
From The Phonograph to the Autotune
Cylinder Report

Title of Recording: Crazy Blues
Artist: Noble Sissle
UCSB Cylinder Number: 9806
"Crazy Blues" by Noble Sissle is a cover of the song originally written by Perry Bradford. This
timeless piece of history was first recorded on August 10th, 1920 by Mamie Smith and later released
on as a vinyl record by Okeh Records.3 Smith's version of the song was wildly successful, selling
75,000 copies in the first month following its release. Within a year, the record had sold over a
million copies, and in all, two million copies were purchased.4 After its incredible success,
recording companies rushed to record other African American singers. Noble Sissle's version was
recorded later that same year, and had similar success. Despite the large quantity of blues recordings
during the 1920's, "Crazy Blues" is considered the first successful blues song recorded by an African
American artist.9 Ironically, "Crazy Blues" is considered more of a popular song than a blues song
despite many references to "blues" throughout the track. Nevertheless, this song paved the way for
black music makers into a then predominately–white recording industry, and quickly after its
release, a market for black music emerged. Perry Bradford, who wrote "Crazy Blues", also
persuaded several record companies to invest in a music market specifically for blacks.9 After
record companies realized the lucrativeness of selling "race

OFF, by Mortis Ghost
What truly makes a 'villain' to us? Is it the need to cause mayhem, a long, resounding evil laugh? Or
just someone whose values run in opposition to ours? Whatever the case may be, we perceive these
characters carefully, recognizing them almost instantly as forces to be reckoned with– That is, most
of the time. In the next few paragraphs I aim to explore why what the most frightening of villains
terrify us the most. Mortis Ghost's 'OFF', a french RPG from 2007, will be our setting for this
phenomenal antagonist. This indie game features a delightful soundtrack, strategic turn–based
combat, and an increasingly dark storyline. The adventure begins with you, the player, being
assigned to control a stoic hero known as 'The Batter'. If he expressed emotions, he would be
probably be indifferent to your being his puppeteer. Regardless, you and he proceed through a land
called Zone 0, entrusted by some unknown force with the task of 'purifying' the land. You encounter
a stray, eloquent and articulate cat calling itself 'The Judge'. It assists you in getting oriented in the
world, and guides you safety through the deserted landscape and to the cusp of the first inhabited
zone, Zone 1. It departs, promising to see you again. As you advance through Zones 1, 2, and 3, The
Batter continues to insist he is the savior of the world, sent to purify the evils within. The timid and
neurotic inhabitants known as 'Elsen' more or less welcome his presence, especially when tormented

Blue Zones: A Perfect Life

Day. Nature walks and social networks are often included in these days. Their diet is directly based
off of verses and stanzas in the Bible. They mainly focus on eating green plants, legumes, and seeds,
while occasionally straying away from meat. Another questionable aspect of their diet is that some
of these Adventists may have a protein deficiency. A prime example of a Californian centenarian is
Ellsworth Whareham (Buettner, 2009). He is 97 years old and a multimillionaire, but when a
contractor wanted $6,000 to build a privacy fence, Whareham said "For that money,
I'll do it myself" (Buettner, 2009). Although my community could add this to their lifestyle, we're
not exactly as religious as this culture and I don't think we would stick to such strict guidelines, but I
can't get over the fact that a fence was put up in four days by a 97–year–old man.
So much for feeling accomplished.

Split Second Processing Essay
Back to the starting point of assessing the big picture, the broad horizon....once enough data is
retrieved from the rapidly changing environment, the brain internalizes the data, discards the invalid
data (noted as a distraction), then narrowly focuses on the data to rehearse it, then it can move on to
the performance. If the brain rushes through any of this split second processing, it can make a
mistake/error.
I believe this flow of concentration, that is presented in the textbook as a square, is actually a sphere
much like an eyeball. It's an eye of the mind or mind's eye. At the center of the cross hairs is a
narrow circle. This is "in the moment" and the circle around this "centered" point is a prioritization
ring or loop that ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The focus loop provides continuous monitoring of all concentration zones. In the center of the loop
is "in the moment, here and now". This is where I want to be when I'm intentionally engaged in an
action–oriented task such as sport climbing. In this example, the focus is parked in a neutral zone
giving all four zones equal attention. This is basically a "flow" type state where the brain has
complete coverage of all concentration zones. It's like most of the climber's thought processes are
autonomic like their heart beat. Everything is in synch. The climber is able to see the "big picture"
assessment to include the environment such as the current weather conditions and their though on a
forecast for the climb. They are also able to monitor the game plan or the route for the climb to
include obstacles and overhangs that potentially could be challenging. They are able to monitoring
their energy levels and determine when and where to take a rest and allow their phosphocreatine
system to recover. When monitoring the climber's narrow internal view, he is conducting body scans
to adjust arousal and breathing rates and progressive muscle relaxation to decrease tension. His skill
and technique are all flowing automatically. He is able to stay ahead of his body and the mountain
with full control. In the external and narrow zone, the climber is engaged in action with intentional
and smooth placement of their hands and feet with perfect balance to keep their energy levels high
and decrease any unnecessary moves that could deplete

Dan Buettner Blue Zones
Dan Buettner's "How To Live To 100+" is a TED talk that explores three of the world's "Blue
Zones". According to Gulli (2008), Blue Zones "are places where people have the lengthiest
lifespans". Of the many Blue Zones in the world, Buettner closely investigated Sardinia, an island
off the coast of Italy; Okinawa, an archipelago south of Tokyo; and Loma Linda, an area in
California containing the Seventh–Day Adventists. During his talk, Buettner (2009) acknowledged
that "Only about 10 percent of how long the average person lives, within certain biological limits, is
dictated by our genes. The other 90 percent is dictated by our lifestyle." The research he presents
throughout his talk seems to prove this as most centenarians in the blue zones mentioned above have

If people took a little more caution when choosing friends, they could undoubtedly add more years
to their lives. Conclusion The ability to reach a three–digit age is easier to obtain than citizens in my
community may think. Most people my age think that you'll live a long and healthy life if you take
part in intense physical activity while having a diet containing lots of protein. However, they're not
doing anything to increase their chances of longevity. If everyday millennials wanted to decrease
their mortality, they could lessen their intake of meat and involve themselves in continual easy
exercise. On the other hand, when it comes to the social life of many millennials, we see that they
have a great number of friends around them, but a majority of them aren't good influences. With
better influences the life span of those in my community could be impacted greatly. The key factors
of longevity that can effortlessly be integrated into my life are constant physical activity, good
eating habits, and healthy social

Comparing The Five Blue Zones

  • 1. Comparing The Five Blue Zones Blue Zones are described by a wide variety of characteristics that affect the inhabitants of these zones lifestyles' and the environments of the world's longest–lived people. There are five blue zones consisting of Okinawa Japan, Sardinia Italy, Nicoya Costa Rica, Ikaria Greece, and Loma Linda California. These five places were first discovered by Dan Buettner when he wrote an article for National Geographic about "The Secrets of a Long Life." These places were chosen by their way of life and characteristics that help them live longer and healthier lives. These five zones have many similarities but also some differences that lead to prosperous lives. They all are very family oriented, they eat healthy with a plant–based diet, and they have ... According to the Danish Twin Study, biology only factors into 10 percent of how long we live, the other 90 percent it based off lifestyle (Buettner 2009). Dan Buettner and his colleagues found three Blue Zones to try to find what types of lifestyles these people are living to become centenarians. Blue Zones are places where people live longer than the majority of people in the world. The Blue Zones are in Sardinia, Okinawa, and Loma Linda, California. They found similarities in their lifestyles that help them to live to be 100+. Those similarities are: they do not do strenuous exercise, have a period of down time, have a word ... People in the Blue Zone not only care for their aging parents but also treat them like celebrities. Dan Buettner (qtd in Gulli 2008) emphasizes that "A stop in any local taverna reveals just how much glory these seniors get. 'Usually we see swimsuit calendars' inside North American sports bars, says Dan Buettner, but when he was in Sardinia, 'it was Centenarian of the Month calendars.'" Also, their relationship with their community is also very important. Those surrounding themselves with the right people allows them to add on many years to their life. Buettner (2009) states, "They all tend to belong to a faith–based community, which is worth between four and 14 extra years of life expectancy if you do it four times a month. And the biggest thing here is they also belong to the right tribe. They were either born into or they proactively surround themselves with the right people," they purposely surround themselves with the right group of people in their lives. The relationships in the Blue Zone societies can be implemented into the lifestyles of the people in Cohort Two; however, many of their ideas cannot be implemented in our lifestyles ... Granting the adjustment will equally or better meet the purpose of the regulation to be adjusted; Response: According to Findings of Fact, Fruitville Road was historically aligned with First Street until the 1980's. At the stated time, the State of Florida enacted a six–lane widening which initiated realignment of Fruitville causing it to converge with the former Third Street that was located west of Lime Avenue. During this transition, the State of Florida initiated eminent domain action, which removed a triangular portion of the subject parcel on its north end, which left the remaining site at an angle. The resulting lot configuration was left oddly shaped, which makes conventional standards difficult to meet. Dan Buettner and his team of researchers took us to four different areas around the world known as The Blue Zones. They uncovered the secrets to health and longevity and told us how we can apply these habits in our lives. The four Blue Zones are: Okinawa Islands, Japan Barbagia region of Sardinia, Italy Loma Linda, California Nicoya Peninsula, Costa Rica We learned about these people living in the Blue Zones through their personal stories, as we were brought into their homes and learned about their lifestyle and what they feel were the best practices in health and longevity. We were introduced to ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... First, I wanted to mention some of the longevity secrets that were mentioned in the area of Sardinia. They believe in eating a plant–based diet consisting of fresh fruits and vegetables, and they believe that drinking goat's milk can fight against heart disease and cognitive disorders such as Alzheimers. They take daily walks and enjoying with family and friends and of course the daily glass of red wine are just a few other secrets. They value family connections here in Sardinia; most families live together, from the parents, children and the grandchildren (Buettner, 2008). In Okinawa, they enjoy being active and being outdoors in the sunshine, gardening and enjoying the company of their "moai (circle of friends). Having a good attitude and what they like to call the "ikigai", which is what they say, gives them a purpose in life and what helps them get up every day. They also believe in eating a plant–based diet, the consume a lot of tofu and rarely eat fish. What I found very interesting that they eat more sweet potatoes, and they consume the spice, turmeric, which has been linked to healthier hearts (Buettner, 2008.) Loma Linda residents also believe in eating more plant based diets, eating in moderation, eating an early dinner, drinking plenty of water, exercising to maintain a healthy weight, and as we have seen in Sardinia and Okinawa, spending quality time with family and friends. ... A few of these blue zones that Buettner (2009) researched are Sardinia, Okinawa, and The Seventh–Day Adventists in Loma Linda, California. These communities are located in different parts of the world and have very different lifestyles, and yet the community members seem to have a longer lifespan than most. The habits the people in these areas do are not only accomplishable in their zone, but also in other parts of the world. In regards to the community of Stafford, Virginia, it is more than likely possible for my peers to adopt some of the habits regularly practiced by the Blue Zoners. On the right side of the world, there is a Blue Zone in Sardinia, Italy called the Nuoro province. Here, the Sardinians consume "a type of cheese made from grass–fed animals so the cheese is high in Omega–3 fatty acids instead of Omega–6 fatty acids from corn–fed animals" (6:05–6:15). They prevent themselves from overeating by "eating off of smaller plates, so they tend to eat fewer calories at every sitting" (8:30–8:40). This habit is possible in Stafford if families began serving food at counters instead of at the dinner table, and not going back for seconds. Obesity and overeating are large problems in America, so a good way to fight it is by starting in small communities like Stafford. Apart from the way the Okinawans eat, the way the elderly live at the time of their "retirement" is important. They use the word "ikigai" as opposed to retirement, which means "the reason for which you wake up in the morning" (10:25–10:40). In other words, "ikigai" refers to one's sense of purpose. This habit is beneficial because it allows them to have something to look forward to everyday. To continue this habit in Stafford, the people in the community should be taught the meaning of the word and be reminded that by just looking forward each day, about seven years could be added to their life. ... In Dan Buettner's TED talk, How to Live to be 100+, he gives his audience several examples of ways to increase their lifespan. Using what he calls "Blue Zones" as examples of communities where people live to be 100 or older, Buettner points out some key elements that allow the people in these "Blue Zones" to live for such a long time. Having a form of daily exercise, eating less and making healthier food choices, having family and friends close by, and even being a part of a religion all factor into having a longer lifespan. The fact that people can extend UPS AND DOWNS OF LIVE BEYOND 100 7 their lifespan by making better choices seems to be evidenced by those who live in what Buettner calls the "Blue Zones." Blue Zones are the hot spots for longevity. Individuals living in these particular Blue Zones live to be over 100 years old. The overall life expectancy for Americans is about 77 years of age. The life expectancy for a woman tends to be approximately five years longer than a male. There are four hot spots and they all have something in common and something different than the others. They maintain a healthy body weight which helps keep cholesterol levels and blood pressure down. Some of the vegetables and fruits they eat reduce the chance of lung, ovarian and prostate cancer. They eat lots of nuts which also reduce the risk of heart disease and increase their life expectancy by two years. Adventists eat big breakfasts, lunch and then a light dinner which helps with sleep and lowers BMI. The last Blue Zone is Nicoya, Costa Rica. In all three areas, they eat a mainly plant based diet in combination with other fresh, healthy foods like whole wheat bread, nuts, beans, and cheese full of Omega–3 fatty acids. These communities also find natural ways to keep them active – walking wherever they go, gardening, bike riding – and most importantly finding ways to stay active if they choose to retire. These cultures also tend to have a social system that finds pride in their elders, so aging adults are surrounded with family and friends. They also pride taking time to relax and destress reducing stress hormones like cortisol. From the Blue Zone type of behaviors, I try to be active. Blue zones are areas around the world where it isn't uncommon for people to live past 100. These areas include Sardinia, Italy; Ikaria, Greece; Okinawa, Japan; Nicoya, Costa Rica; and Loma Linda, California. Researchers around the world have found similarities between the blue zones with the biggest similarities being diet and socialization. Almost all centenarians (people who live over 100) have set family as their biggest priorities. Family members talk to each other almost every day, take care of one another, and generally love each other. Blood circulates through our entire bodies which means the proteins in our blood have reflected everything that is happening in the human body. This means an infection in a person's foot, can be seen through the proteins in blood drawn from the arm. The potential power of proteomics is mind–blowing. With proteomics, doctors can find any disease, disorder, or any other problem just by examining a single drop of blood. Instead of running dozens of different tests to find out what is wrong with someone, all a doctor has to do is draw the patient's blood, send it to the lab, and wait for the results (Agus 110–112). This will save a lot of time and money for the patient as well as helping him/her improve her medical condition. Dan Buettner starts talking about three blue zones: Sardinia, Okinawa, and Loma Linda, CA. The first blue zone is in Sardinia, only up in the highlands with an area called the Nuoro province. This part of Sardinia has an oldest male society, where 102 year olds ride bikes to work and chop wood. Since the land is so infertile, people in this area are mostly shepherds, which means their exercise is regular low–intensity physical activity. Their diet is mostly plant based and consists of unleavened whole wheat bread called carta musica, cheese made from grass fed animals high in omega 3 fatty acids, and Cannonau, a wine with three times the level of polyphenols. In this society, age and knowledge is thought of very highly, and is celebrated through a centenarian of the month calendar. The term that he gives for this concept is "procreative success," and he explains that this mostly involves genetics. The second myth that Buettner discusses is the myth that treatments can help a person live longer. He says that this myth is false because there are several things that can age us. For example, the thirty five trillion cells that we have in our bodies are replaced every eight years. When this happens, the damage that is done builds up over time, which causes aging. "That 's why a sixty five year old person is aging at a rate of about one hundred and twenty five times faster than a twelve year old person," says Buettner. According to the video, it is not possible to stop this natural process with treatments. These two myths show that most Americans have been misinformed about the process of aging and the way to longevity. The next subject that Buettner discussed was the three "Blue Zones" where more people live to be over one hundred and the life expectancy is higher than any other locations in the world. The first "Blue Zone" is located off the coast of Italy, in the Nuoro Province of Sardinia. These people have many habits that make it possible for them to live well over one hundred years old. This means that you are going to hit many bumps in the road but there is always times where you can push through and make the most of their life. As defined by Dictionary.com perseverance is a "steady persistence in a course of action, a purpose, a state, etc., especially in spite of difficulties, obstacles, or discouragement." The synonyms are "Dedication" , " Determination" , and "Diligence". The antonyms for this word are "Apathy", "Cowardice" , and "Weakness" . This is important because people need to persevere to get through life's tough challenges and make the most of it even when times are tough. In the real world this looks like people trying to get through the day even though money is tight. This doesn't not look like people just sitting around not doing anything to try to help themselves if they don't have job. The first example where perseverance is shown is that when in the book Glory Road Coach Don Haskins was scrimmaging at college and he is left in all day with no breaks. Later when he got home he took off his sock and the skin on the ball of his foot fell off because he ran so much. The next day he goes to the athletic trainer's room and tapes the skin back on his feet. If individuals want to create relations with one another, they need to be able to understand each other. They also need to take the initiative to figure out others, and be able to communicate and connect with each other. However, the only way that you can understand others is if you relate with one another, in order to build relations and be comfortable around each other. In order for you to be able to connect with other people and have relations with others people, we need to leave our comfort zone and relate to other people. Whether it be learning a new language or moving to a new place, just like the individuals in the second source and third source were able to do. In the story of "In the Skin of a Lion," the main character is Patrick who lived amongst other immigrants and did not recognize their language and culture because he kept to himself. However, when he took the initiative to learn the Macedonian word for Iguana he was able to communicate with others at the fruit stall, and in the future he was able to be close to some new people he didn't even know existed. The Blue Planet Open Ocean Pelagic Zone In this episode of the BBC documentary series, "The Blue Planet: Open Ocean," we were able to explore the abundance and complications of the open ocean, the pelagic zone. Over 60% of our planet is covered by the ocean, yet the deep sea is largely still unknown. We know more about the moon than what we know about the deep ocean. The temperature and the level of sunlight decrease as the depth increases. The ocean may appear uniform from the surface, but there is several layers to the ocean. The pelagic zone contains the most area of the open ocean. The zone includes everything except for the coastal waters and the sea floor. The closest to the surface is the epipelagic subzone stretches to about 200m. This zone has enough sunlight and nutrients for bigger marine creatures like tuna, sharks, giant jellyfish and predator fishes. The second subzone, the mesopelagic, also known as the twilight zone, with the depth of 200m to 1000m; this zone has barely sunlight. The insufficient of sunlight prohibits organisms to perform photosynthesis in the twilight zone. Surviving in the twilight zone is about seeing and not being seen. These organisms need to be able to see their prey, but they should not be spotted by their predators. The next subzone is the bathypelagic ranging from 1000 to 4000 m, containing bioluminescent marine organisms which create light, like hatchet fish and squid. Below 150m, photosynthesis is impossible; hence there are only animals and no plants in this region and below. The animals living in the bathypelagic zone solely rely on detritus for food or on eating other animals. At this depth and pressure, the animals most commonly found are fish, mollusks, crustaceans, and jellyfish.Red, black and bioluminescent animals in this appear as completely black to others since there is very little to no light penetration at this depth. We've had expeditions to search of the fountain of youth within Florida; as well as Linus Paulin thinking he found the key to immortality through vitamins, and later dying from same cancer he claimed vitamins cured (Offit, "The Vitamin Myth: Why We Think We Need Supplements."). Now author and public speaker Dan Buettner found a new lead towards living a longer, healthier life. Buettner tracked down areas that he dubbed Blue Zone, a geographic area of the world where people live measurably longer lives, and thinks these areas hold the key to living a longer life. But does Virginia have potential to hold one of these Blue Zones? No, I don't predict that any community or neighborhood in Virginia could adopt these lifestyles and or cultures. Most Virginia areas lack a sense of community, aren't too social, practice lazy habits, and don't typically have a strong "green" or healthy diet. During this paper I expect to represent that point and why these issues can be connected to our society's standards and expectations. So let's dive into what's currently in the way. ... It's fitting he picked Okinawa, Japan as their marketing and social stigma towards health is completely different from our own. Our society has a extremely skewed perception on what it means to be healthy. With convenience being placed above everything else, our community lost that easy access and social push to eat right. Even the food industry reflect this dilemma pricing salads at a higher price than junk food. This creates a strange paradigm of people who can't afford to eat healthy. A message absent in ... • 109. Buettner How To Be 100 Analysis In Dan Buettner's "How to live to be 100+" TED talk, longevity and three major 'blue zones' around the world are discussed. The blue zones of the Nuoro Province, Okinawa, and the prairies of Minnesota are the three focused on in the talk. Their lifestyles are talked about and it is made clear that there is no secret formula when it comes to longevity. Not every practice of each blue zone is touched on because many are societal changes that have been passed down and kept up for years and take about that long to recreate in other areas. The three major takeaways from this talk as well as some credible online sources are that fitness, friendships, as it relates to maintaining happiness and company throughout life, and diet are extremely important ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Overall the evidence supports the idea that having friends makes your life happier and helps you live longer. Diet The last major reason Buettner uses in his talk that backs up longevity is a better diet. One approach to eating better would be to try implementing the "MIND" diet which consists of increasing your grain, vegetable, and fish intake, while decreasing the amount of red meats and sweets consumed. This particular diet focuses on decreasing the risk of Alzheimer's, which is a major cause of death in those over the age of one–hundred (Health.com, 2016). Two approaches that are more permanent than something like a diet that usually has a start and finish date are to have smaller portions of food and to stop eating when you are eighty percent full. The way the Okinawan blue zone has made smaller portions the "norm" is by eating off of smaller plates as opposed to our average american size plates. Alongside eating fewer calories, a three– thousand year old adage, "Hara, Hatchi, Bu," created by Confucius, reinforces to stop eating when you are eighty percent full before every meal (Buettner, 2009). Blue Zones Blue Zones is an anthropological concept that describes the characteristic lifestyles and the environments of the world's longest–lived people. They are the places in the world where people live longer and healthier than anywhere else on earth. The four blue zones he talked about were the Italian island of sardinia; Okinawa, Japan; Loma Linda, California; and Costa Rica's isolated Nicoya Peninsula. One of the common factors all these places had were the eating styles. All of them had a plant based diet. They all also lived in tribes whom were basically considered family just in case something would have happened to them or their family, these tribe members would be the backup plan and are the people who take care of them. So there social engagement levels were all high due to these tribe member always being with them and being with one another. If you tend to throw your mail on the counter as you walk in the door that may be an ideal place for a basket to store mail and paperwork. The relationships of the activities need to be considered. A TV zone and a reading zone should be put at opposites ends of a room so that people can utilize the space simultaneously. The configurations and restrictions of the room also need to be taken into account. When you are setting aside time in your schedule, it is important to estimate how much time the organization process will take. Most rooms will take one to one and one–half days to complete. Plant Slant Beans, including guava, dark, soy and lentils, are the foundation of most centenarian eating methodologies. On the basis of reports from the mid–19th to mid–20th century, meat consumption by the rural population rarely exceeded two to four servings per month, (4). • 133. Comfort Zone Definition Zones Someone once said "Great things never come from comfort zones." That is basically saying that if people have a comfort zone they won't fully be able to enjoy the things that make them happy. With comfort zones it holds people back from becoming the best. The dictionary states that comfort zones are "a place or situation where one feels safe or at ease without stress". "Relief", "soothe", and "ease" are just some of the synonyms of this phrase. "Discomfort", "stress", and "unhappiness" are some of the antonyms of this word. Comfort zones make one feel happy or safe, and they tend to go back to that place or state of mind when times get hard. Most people don't have a very large comfort zone which means they are scared to do stuff that scares them, they don't take risks. All of these people were forced to go out of their comfort zone because they didn't believe in what was going on, they wanted to make a change, or just simply because they wanted to be remembered as something more. There are more good things about not having a comfort zone vs having a comfort zone. The good thing is that people who don't have a comfort zone never are afraid to do anything they're not comfortable with. The people that have a comfort zone are afraid to do anything. The first example is Temple Grandin, she was a woman with autism that was bullied and she had to figure how to get out of her comfort zone. When she did that she wasnt afraid to do anything. This timeless piece of history was first recorded on August 10th, 1920 by Mamie Smith and later released on as a vinyl record by Okeh Records.3 Smith's version of the song was wildly successful, selling 75,000 copies in the first month following its release. Within a year, the record had sold over a million copies, and in all, two million copies were purchased.4 After its incredible success, recording companies rushed to record other African American singers. Noble Sissle's version was recorded later that same year, and had similar success. Despite the large quantity of blues recordings during the 1920's, "Crazy Blues" is considered the first successful blues song recorded by an African American artist.9 Ironically, "Crazy Blues" is considered more of a popular song than a blues song despite many references to "blues" throughout the track. Nevertheless, this song paved the way for black music makers into a then predominately–white recording industry, and quickly after its release, a market for black music emerged. Perry Bradford, who wrote "Crazy Blues", also persuaded several record companies to invest in a music market specifically for blacks.9 After record companies realized the lucrativeness of selling "race ... Whatever the case may be, we perceive these characters carefully, recognizing them almost instantly as forces to be reckoned with– That is, most of the time. In the next few paragraphs I aim to explore why what the most frightening of villains terrify us the most. Mortis Ghost's 'OFF', a french RPG from 2007, will be our setting for this phenomenal antagonist. They have days, presumably on Saturdays, where they only focus on God and nothing else, which is usually known as Sabbath Day. Nature walks and social networks are often included in these days. Their diet is directly based off of verses and stanzas in the Bible. They mainly focus on eating green plants, legumes, and seeds, while occasionally straying away from meat. Another questionable aspect of their diet is that some of these Adventists may have a protein deficiency. A prime example of a Californian centenarian is Ellsworth Whareham (Buettner, 2009).
