Mike Laverick introduces #FeedForward, a new mentoring program to help people present at their local VMUG sessions. The program pairs presenters with experienced mentors who will review presentations, provide feedback, and help presenters practice their delivery. Several people who received mentoring through #FeedForward found it extremely helpful for improving their content and building their confidence to successfully present. The program aims to encourage more community members to share their experiences.

ATD 2015: Facilitating Virtual Leadership Workshops with ConfidenceExperiencePoint
Presentation by:
James Chisholm, Principal at ExperiencePoint
Jennifer Labin, Founder at TERP Associates
For leadership development, learning by doing through simulation remains one of the best ways to develop people. While classroom-style events foster a shared experience and a chance for people to learn from one another, it is increasingly difficult to get busy people together in one room. As practitioners and consultants, how might we deliver change and innovation simulation workshops to leaders and managers who are geographically dispersed, and still provide the networking and knowledge sharing benefits of classroom training?
During this session, you will participate in a series of group activities to uncover what works before embarking on the virtual facilitation journey. This session will focus on interaction methods, technology supports, and other design considerations critical for success in delivering simulation-based workshops to geographically dispersed remote teams. Whether you are facilitating a concurrent workshop in three countries, or simply trying to integrate a remote team into a training event, you will learn best practices for engaging remote participants in hands-on experiential learning.

5 fast and fun ways to create great videoLou Bortone
Join us for this fun, fast-paced and free slide presentation where we'll reveal brand new, cutting-edge info that will turn you into an instant video ninja!
Online Visibility Expert and Video Pro Lou Bortone will share five (okay, maybe more) quick and easy ways to create great video, even if you hate technology or hate being on camera. Grab a paper and pen, because you'll want to write down all the stealth secrets and super-simple-shortcuts that we'll demonstrate.
You'll discover:
* How to tap into your inner creative genius
* New ways to deliver your message visually
* How to make your own "sketch" videos and cool animation
* New websites and resources to make video creation a snap
* How to crank out consistent and compelling video content
More leads, more exposure for our company’s thought leaders, and more chances to share our message is all that we want from delivering a webcast. But what about the people who attend those webcasts? On the bottom line, our webcasts are only successful when everyone gets what they need and giving your attendees what they really want means understanding why your attendees is attending, and ensuring that you cater to their content needs.
How do you achieve that? Easy! Just follow these guidelines for giving your attendees what they really want:

Search and Society: Reimagining Information Access for Radical FuturesBhaskar Mitra
The field of Information retrieval (IR) is currently undergoing a transformative shift, at least partly due to the emerging applications of generative AI to information access. In this talk, we will deliberate on the sociotechnical implications of generative AI for information access. We will argue that there is both a critical necessity and an exciting opportunity for the IR community to re-center our research agendas on societal needs while dismantling the artificial separation between the work on fairness, accountability, transparency, and ethics in IR and the rest of IR research. Instead of adopting a reactionary strategy of trying to mitigate potential social harms from emerging technologies, the community should aim to proactively set the research agenda for the kinds of systems we should build inspired by diverse explicitly stated sociotechnical imaginaries. The sociotechnical imaginaries that underpin the design and development of information access technologies needs to be explicitly articulated, and we need to develop theories of change in context of these diverse perspectives. Our guiding future imaginaries must be informed by other academic fields, such as democratic theory and critical theory, and should be co-developed with social science scholars, legal scholars, civil rights and social justice activists, and artists, among others.

"Impact of front-end architecture on development cost", Viktor TurskyiFwdays
I have heard many times that architecture is not important for the front-end. Also, many times I have seen how developers implement features on the front-end just following the standard rules for a framework and think that this is enough to successfully launch the project, and then the project fails. How to prevent this and what approach to choose? I have launched dozens of complex projects and during the talk we will analyze which approaches have worked for me and which have not.

10. +
Some Early Wins –
Rasmus Haslund - @haslund
“Frank and I set up a Skype video chat and
went over what I had already prepared.
Basically,I presented like I would have done
at the VMUG event.
The kind assistance and advice Frank gave
me was invaluable! I truly believe my
session was many times better than it
would have been otherwise.Obviously,I
was still very nervous, this being my first
VMUG presentation, but I felt at ease
knowing someone else had helped me with
the“sharp edges,”which I would normally
not have heard about until after the
presentation.”
11. +
Some Early Wins –
@NickFurnell
“The approach really clarified my own
thinking, and the fact that we wandered in
and around the subject matter prepared
me for the typical“audience heckler.”My
confidence grew,and although the method
appeared to be an elaborate three-hour chat,
Mike concluded the session by simply saying
that we were done and that I was ready to
deliver my subject matter!”
12. +
Some Early Wins - @AlexGalbraith
“The benefits to me were two-fold.Having
that second pair of eyes on my slides
and presentation from someone who
does this day in, day out gave me
confidence that the content was up to
par. Then having a practice run in a zero-
pressure environment where the audience
understands the subject matter and gives
you constructive feedback is absolutely
invaluable! I would have asked my wife,
but having her fall asleep mid-
presentation through boredom would not
have done my confidence any good.”
13. +
Some Early Wins - @AlexGalbraith
“I’m currently an SE atVMware and have
always wanted to improve on my public
speaking and presentation skills so the
VMUG’s and FeedForward was a great
opportunity to present and also for a
seasoned presenter to give me
FeedForward before hand. We ended up
spending around 2 hrs going over my
presentation.The FeedForward was very
valuable and also helped with my
confidence to deliver the presentation
and know that the content was informative.
I would definitely recommend
FeedForward to anyone looking to present
atVMUG’s and will be looking to use this
great community lead initiative for future
presentations”
14. +
Some Early Wins –
@HansDeLeenheer
“Sometimes just having a check on your slide
deck by someone experienced with
presenting is very helpful.Getting that
personal touch of someone covering your
back is worth a lot more than a blog post
with tips and tricks.Tips and tricks won’t
help making it a good story.Tips and tricks
won’t help you with that stress relief.I have
seen inexperienced speakers thrive when
doing a duo session with a‘senior,’for
example. So whether you just want to show us
your deck,do a mock presentation on
Skype/Google+ or even have your back on
stage,I promise we will do everything in
our power to help you thrive.”
