In order for schools to help students grow academically, emotionally, and socially, it is imperative for schools to develop partnerships with community organizations in order to provide resources or support for students and their families. For this assignment, you will write a 1 page research-based paper in current APA format that outlines a plan for a partnership between a community organization and an urban school. The paper will include the following sections: 1. An introductory paragraph that introduces the importance of school-community partnerships and the purpose of the paper. Interesting facts or statistics are included to pique the reader’s interest. 2. Identify a real community organization and explain the purpose and history of the organization. The organization you choose must have locations in, or provide support to urban areas. 3. Describe a detailed plan for a partnership between a school (elementary, middle, or high school) and the organization. State a goal for this partnership and describe exactly how the community organization could provide support to the school. The partnership can address academics, behavior, physical health, mental health, well-being, or any other aspect of students’ lives that could be enhanced through a community partnership. The plan may include a financial contribution in addition to other services that the organization will provide to the school. Financial contributions should not be the extent of the partnership. 4. Describe how the partnership would be mutually beneficial to the school and the community organization. Include at least one Biblical principle that supports the establishment of this partnership. Scripture should be integrated into your discussion. 5. A conclusion paragraph that provides a well-developed summary of the content of the paper and includes a quote, Scripture, statistic, or personal application that provides appropriate closure for the paper. Research must be used for support throughout each section of the paper. The paper must include at least three references in addition to the Bible. .

This is a necessary task for schools to attend to. Good parent and community relations make for a better school experience for everyone connected to the school.
For your final assignment in this course, you will create a parent and community involvement plan. Your plan should be ten to twelve pages in length, not including the title page and reference page. Be sure to include a minimum of five scholarly sources (not including your textbook), cited and referenced in APA style, that support your ideas.
Your plan should address the following items:

In Week Five, you read about the link between Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs and parental involvement. When students do not have their basic needs met or do not feel safe in school, they are not fully prepared for academic instruction. “It is imperative that we proactively create a climate that will support all students learning” (Hjalmarson, 2011, p.135). Partnerships are all about connection. In this final week of the class, we will end our discussion about the need to develop partnerships among schools, families, and communities to support student success.
Parents are the glue that helps to bring students and schools together. For schools, it is important to gain parent support and involvement in assisting students in their educational growth. Schools must develop strategies to offer parents in establishing better support for students in their educational journey; however, in order for schools to help parents, there must be a plan in place. We learned at the start of this course that there are a variety of ways in which parents can be supportive of students in school. Far gone are the days when the only way that parents could show support was to help with homework. Although helping with homework is still vital, it is only a small example of the many strategies that parents can use to support the education of their children.
Think about the classroom today, beyond fundraisers and PTA meetings. What are some of ways in which your child's school has asked for your support or you have asked parents for support? How does this extend to using technology as a means of academic support? Consider the technology you use to communicate with your child’s teachers or with the parents of your students. Research shows a strong correlation between the achievement gap and home Internet accessibility (Empowering Parents, 2010). “If, as President Obama emphasizes, parents have a responsibility to be actively involved in their children’s education, they will need the technology tools and skills to do so effectively” (The Children’s Partnership, 2010, p. 7). Having regular communication with schools through email, blogs, and social media helps parents receive updates to their child’s performance and plan for what additional supports they might need for areas of need.

Community relationships are important in school success. Schools are often at the center of community activity and can be a significant source of pride to a community. Creating and sustaining this positive relationship is part of every educator’s work. This is especially true in communities where tax levy elections support the school. Establishing positive community relationships is the right thing to do. When people in the community work together on behalf of students, great things can happen. Part of establishing positive community relationships is “getting the message out” about the good things the school is doing in/for the community.
For this assignment, you are to take the part of a teacher who has been invited to speak for 10-15 minutes to a community group (your choice) to discuss the school, what students are doing in/for the community, and how the community can best support the school and its students.
Your presentation should be creative, engaging, and media focused. You may use the presentation software of your choice (Power Point, Present Me, Prezi, etc.). Did you know there is a National African American Parent Involvement Day (NAAPID) that takes place in schools across the country in the month of February? Inspired by a speech during the Million Man March in 1995 that challenged all the men in the crowd to give back to their community, Michigan school Principal Joseph Dulin initiated this movement as a day of events encouraging parents to get more involved in their child's school. “It comes during Black History Month,” explains Dulin, “and I thought it was a tremendous time to introduce it as a project for parents to get into our schools to exchange notes, phone numbers, emails, have conversations and get in touch with the teachers” (Cavanaugh, 2016, para. 6).

In Week Five, you read about the link between Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs and parental involvement. When students do not have their basic needs met or do not feel safe in school, they are not fully prepared for academic instruction. “It is imperative that we proactively create a climate that will support all students learning” (Hjalmarson, 2011, p.135). Partnerships are all about connection. In this final week of the class, we will end our discussion about the need to develop partnerships among schools, families, and communities to support student success.
Parents are the glue that helps to bring students and schools together. For schools, it is important to gain parent support and involvement in assisting students in their educational growth. Schools must develop strategies to offer parents in establishing better support for students in their educational journey; however, in order for schools to help parents, there must be a plan in place. We learned at the start of this course that there are a variety of ways in which parents can be supportive of students in school. Far gone are the days when the only way that parents could show support was to help with homework. Although helping with homework is still vital, it is only a small example of the many strategies that parents can use to support the education of their children.
Think about the classroom today, beyond fundraisers and PTA meetings. What are some of ways in which your child's school has asked for your support or you have asked parents for support? How does this extend to using technology as a means of academic support? Consider the technology you use to communicate with your child’s teachers or with the parents of your students. Research shows a strong correlation between the achievement gap and home Internet accessibility (Empowering Parents, 2010). “If, as President Obama emphasizes, parents have a responsibility to be actively involved in their children’s education, they will need the technology tools and skills to do so effectively” (The Children’s Partnership, 2010, p. 7). Having regular communication with schools through email, blogs, and social media helps parents receive updates to their child’s performance and plan for what additional supports they might need for areas of need.

Did you know there is a National African American Parent Involvement Day (NAAPID) that takes place in schools across the country in the month of February? Inspired by a speech during the Million Man March in 1995 that challenged all the men in the crowd to give back to their community, Michigan school Principal Joseph Dulin initiated this movement as a day of events encouraging parents to get more involved in their child's school. “It comes during Black History Month,” explains Dulin, “and I thought it was a tremendous time to introduce it as a project for parents to get into our schools to exchange notes, phone numbers, emails, have conversations and get in touch with the teachers” (Cavanaugh, 2016, para. 6).
Although the day is geared toward African American parents, the schools encourage every parent to participate for a common goal of promoting parent involvement, eliminating the achievement gap, and creating partnerships among stakeholders. Last week you learned about how both parents play a crucial role in the child’s education, especially when there is a collaborative relationship between home and school. A 2007 study found that new and experienced teachers who have positive parent relationships report having higher rates of job satisfaction.
They also report that students of involved fathers, regardless of their living situation, perform better in school (Jeynes, 2007 as cited in Child Trends, 2013). The Watch DOGS (Dads of Great Students) is one school-based program that encourages male role models to work in a variety of capacities at their child’s school. Last week you learned about how both parents play a crucial role in the child’s education, especially when there is a collaborative relationship between home and school. A 2007 study found that new and experienced teachers who have positive parent relationships report having higher rates of job satisfaction.

They also report that students of involved fathers, regardless of their living situation, perform better in school (Jeynes, 2007 as cited in Child Trends, 2013). The Watch DOGS (Dads of Great Students) is one school-based program that encourages male role models to work in a variety of capacities at their child’s school. The seven minute video, Getting Involved at School (Links to an external site.), features the coordinator of the program, the principal, and others discussing the importance of having males active in the school environment.
In addition, going beyond the family to creating partnerships within the community has also been shown to improve students’ academic success. One way to accomplish this is through community schools, a concept developed by the Institute for Educational Leadership in Washington DC. Through this integrated, holistic approach with family, child development and social service support, the community school strategy is already proving its efficacy on student achievement, and dropout and graduation rates (Blank, Jacobson, & Melaville, 2012). Putting together a team that includes the principal, a few teachers, family members, and students is the first step in creating an “Action Team for Partnership” (O’Brien, 2012, p. 2). The purpose of this team is to work with community and business leaders to develop goals for increasing academic achievement, as well as improving student behavior and school climate. Organizations such as National Network of Partnership Schools help schools to get started developing their own Action Plan for Partnership (Links to an external site.) that includes short and long term goals, and activities that guide them towards success.

Did you know there is a National African American Parent Involvement Day (NAAPID) that takes place in schools across the country in the month of February? Inspired by a speech during the Million Man March in 1995 that challenged all the men in the crowd to give back to their community, Michigan school Principal Joseph Dulin initiated this movement as a day of events encouraging parents to get more involved in their child's school. “It comes during Black History Month,” explains Dulin, “and I thought it was a tremendous time to introduce it as a project for parents to get into our schools to exchange notes, phone numbers, emails, have conversations and get in touch with the teachers” (Cavanaugh, 2016, para. 6).
Although the day is geared toward African American parents, the schools encourage every parent to participate for a common goal of promoting parent involvement, eliminating the achievement gap, and creating partnerships among stakeholders. Hugh Price, retired CEO of the National Urban League and founder of Campaign for African-American Achievement, explains that "community norms have traditionally played a particularly central role in the lives of black Americans" (Price, 2008, p. 19). A variety of students from different cultural backgrounds benefit from the help that school-family-community partnerships can provide. When schools use the resources at hand, they have the capacity to improve students' achievement and provide strategies that parents can use to develop skills needed in continuing to help their children. A Strategic Plan to Involve School-Family-Community Partnerships via Service Learning
Service Learning is a term used to describe planned learning activities in which students learn curricular lessons/materials through school and/or community service. An example would be using math and writing skills to plan, create, and publicize a community garden space. The students benefit from using curricular skills to create a concrete entity, learning valuable lessons about serving others, while the community benefits from a new garden space.
For this assignment:
Create an annotated outline that explains the steps you would take to help students plan, create, and publicize a project benefitting the community.
Student academic, curricular, physical, and social development should be explicitly detailed in your outline.
Additionally, your outline should clearly demonstrate a connection to service learning ideas, identifying the project, how it will proceed, and citing/referencing at least three scholarly service learning sources in APA style.
Finally, while there is no specified length for your outline, your outline should fully explain what you intend to have students do and why you intend to have them do it.

Did you know there is a National African American Parent Involvement Day (NAAPID) that takes place in schools across the country in the month of February? Inspired by a speech during the Million Man March in 1995 that challenged all the men in the crowd to give back to their community, Michigan school Principal Joseph Dulin initiated this movement as a day of events encouraging parents to get more involved in their child's school. “It comes during Black History Month,” explains Dulin, “and I thought it was a tremendous time to introduce it as a project for parents to get into our schools to exchange notes, phone numbers, emails, have conversations and get in touch with the teachers” (Cavanaugh, 2016, para. 6).
Although the day is geared toward African American parents, the schools encourage every parent to participate for a common goal of promoting parent involvement, eliminating the achievement gap, and creating partnerships among stakeholders. Hugh Price, retired CEO of the National Urban League and founder of Campaign for African-American Achievement, explains that "community norms have traditionally played a particularly central role in the lives of black Americans" (Price, 2008, p. 19). A variety of students from different cultural backgrounds benefit from the help that school-family-community partnerships can provide. When schools use the resources at hand, they have the capacity to improve students' achievement and provide strategies that parents can use to develop skills needed in continuing to help their children. As teachers, we are planning, creating, and teaching students and attending to all the intellectual and physical labor that teaching entails. We are busy professionals often with busy personal lives to manage as well. - 1. Community Partnership Plan Assignment Instructions Schools have an enormous responsibility to provide high quality educational outcomes for students. In order for schools to help students grow academically, emotionally, and socially, it is imperative for schools to develop partnerships with community organizations in order to provide resources or support for students and their families. For this assignment, you will write a 1 page research-based paper in current APA format that outlines a plan for a partnership between a community organization and an urban school. The paper will include the following sections: 1. An introductory paragraph that introduces the importance of school-community partnerships and the purpose of the paper. Interesting facts or statistics are included to pique the reader’s interest. 2. Identify a real community organization and explain the purpose and history of the organization. The organization you choose must have locations in, or provide support to urban areas. 3. Describe a detailed plan for a partnership between a school (elementary, middle, or high school) and the organization. State a goal for this partnership and describe exactly how the community organization could provide support to the school. The partnership can address academics, behavior, physical health, mental health, well-being, or any other aspect of students’ lives that could be enhanced through a community
- 2. partnership. The plan may include a financial contribution in addition to other services that the organization will provide to the school. Financial contributions should not be the extent of the partnership. 4. Describe how the partnership would be mutually beneficial to the school and the community organization. Include at least one Biblical principle that supports the establishment of this partnership. Scripture should be integrated into your discussion. 5. A conclusion paragraph that provides a well-developed summary of the content of the paper and includes a quote, Scripture, statistic, or personal application that provides appropriate closure for the paper. Research must be used for support throughout each section of the paper. The paper must include at least three references in addition to the Bible.
