Marketing Presentation
Angie Vanderluit – EDAC 646
 This type of project was chosen because it seemed very

worthwhile and it requires a community effort.
 This community garden project is aimed at alleviating
shortages of fresh food in urban settings.
General Themes in the Literature

Application of the Ideas in the creation of the
Community Garden

Volunteer-driven efforts are best when
organized by members of the community.

Get people from the community where a garden
will be situated to organize the project.

History of community garden activism

Inspiration for the success of future community
garden efforts

Community gardens are cultural landscapes.

Groups from around the world can use
gardening to reflect diversity.

Gardens shorten distance to food source.

Benefits of gardening should be communicated
to stakeholders.

Gardening is healthy in multiple ways.

Benefits of gardening should be communicated
to stakeholders.

Gardening builds and reinforces communities.

Benefits of gardening should be communicated
to stakeholders.

Volunteers are encouraged to help when they
receive benefits from community gardens.

Give volunteers access to the benefits of
community gardens.
 I looked at two different organizations, one local and

one in Washington, that had some measure of success
with their community gardening projects.
 From these examples, I designed an organization that
allowed volunteers to have a garden plot of their own.
This rewarded them for helping out. It also created
more extra food that will be donated and benefit the
community.
 The following video provides another example of

policies and procedures that go into the management
of community gardens. It also describes the main
benefits of community gardens.
 Our community garden would make a video similar to
this one and post it online as a promotional tool.
 Throughout this process, I have learned a lot more

about the specific ways gardens need to be set up.
 One of the main points of that is providing adequate
instruction for people who want to have their own
garden but don’t know how.
 The following clip is an example of a video that would
be used as part of a list of resources for new gardeners
to use as they need to.
 The two evaluators (a volunteer manager and a

volunteer) had different things to say about gardening
 The manager stressed the importance of marketing to

get people involved and to raise funds.
 The volunteer said that “more detailed instructions
possibly in print or video form should be provided.”
 The video on the previous slide is one resource that

would be on a list given to new gardeners.
 Marketing would be done by making a video and
posting it online, social networking sites, and leaving
flyers in public places such as libraries and cafes.
 See next slide for an example flyer.
Gardening is easy!

No experience? No worries!
We have experts who can teach you
and answer your questions. We
also have resources to help you as
you learn.

How to Get Involved:
Meet with us Thursdays at 5 in your
local library.
Call 555-6346 and talk to us.
Volunteer for specific events (posted
on our social networking site).
Donate supplies or money.

Gardening is good for you and your community. It’s good
exercise and it’s a great way to reduce food cost.
Increase the health of your community. Garden!
