“At the end of our lives we will not be judged by how many diplomas we have received, how much
money we have made or how many great things we have done. We will be judged by: I was hungry
and you gave me to eat. I was naked and you clothed me. I was homeless and you took me in. –

The Glee Club CommunityOutreach
Never underestimate the power of giving back it does not only benefit the community
you are giving back but you as a person. For our community outreach, we decide we
want to do something which is different and that we going to continue doing for the
next coming years.
We called various orphanages, old age homes you can name it. When I called Megan
Strydom the volunteer coordinator of Refliwe Community Engagement she was so
happy that we can actually help out, she informed me that they really help with the kids
tutoring and Saturday kids program which they do the kids. For the Saturday kids club,
we had helped out with the Heritage event. We had a full program planned we spend
about a week practicing. I managed to ask for some books and magazines from my
mother so that we can donate those for the kids.
Glee club members come from different backgrounds and cultures. We are a group of
friends who connect through music, religion, and everything else. I faith keeps us
together and the amount of love and support we have for each other is amazing. We
taught the kids the importance of friendship and learning how to accept one another for
who they are. With that they will be unified and strongly be able to support each other
in time of need because one man cannot do it on their own we all need a helping hand.
HeritageEvent
There were a lot of kids there who do not know where they come from or which culture
they belong to it was so easy for some kids because they are from the community. We
prepared different songs, 2 Skits (a plays), brought different traditional games, played
with the kids and also helped out with lunch. We spent about a week preparing for the
event which it was a bit overwhelming because we still had school work to do but we
managed to delivery.
Having to help out with the heritage event was amazing and the kids were so happy to
see us they enjoyed playing. For the kids who don’t know their culture because they are
orphanages we managed to give them a few our different backgrounds, the language we
speak the food and how we dress. After spending the whole day at Refliwe Community
we are planning to make it a long –term thing to help out with tutoring, events, and the
Saturday’s kids club. It is amazing how we got to meet the older kids and the young
ones too.
WhatI havelearned
I realized that giving back is important and when we give back we must fully open our
hearts and not hold back anything because some people don’t have what we have and
it’s important to share. A few girls from the Home asked me to come to their school to
be their motivational speaker for a project they have. I was so happy and honoured, the
girls were so fascinated by me and I didn’t know what I did to get that kind of
treatment. I agreed to go to their school because I have realized young girls out there
they do not have role models people to look up to. That alone inspired me to start a
monitoring and motivational speaking program whereby I monitor young girls from
differ school and do motivational speaking in various schools. Be a role model I wish I
had. It was really amazing how to see children from different ages are able to have such
joy in their hearts but yet still do not have all of the basic needs
We as the Glee club we are still going to be a part of Refliwe and other communities we
are inspired to do great things by helping out in the communities. Change starts with us
and we are the change.
