On 26 May 2021 Dr Marlene Mengoni was one of two speakers at an event exploring barriers to open research.
Dr Marlene Mengoni is a member of the Institute of Medical & Biological Engineering (IMBE) at the University of Leeds and is interested in theoretical aspects of musculoskeletal tissues biomechanics with a fundamental computational engineering approach.
Speaking from an engineering perspective, Dr Mengoni discussed how the research culture at the University of Leeds can help to foster open research practices, throughout the research cycle, including embedding "open" in research and training.

The Open Data report is a result of a year-long, co-conducted study between Elsevier and the Centre for Science and Technology Studies (CWTS), part of Leiden University, the Netherlands. The study is based on a complementary methods approach consisting of a quantitative analysis of bibliometric and publication data, a global survey of 1,200 researchers and three case studies including in-depth interviews with key individuals involved in data collection, analysis and deposition in the fields of soil science, human genetics and digital humanities.

This article outlines a comprehensive approach to facilitating the transfer of research into practice. It discusses three main issues: 1) Activities should be seen as long-term efforts rather than isolated events; 2) There are multiple audiences (policymakers, practitioners, study populations) that can benefit from research; and 3) Multiple modes (meetings, training, disseminating existing research) are needed to effectively transfer research into practice. The approach encompasses considering stakeholders' needs, building relationships between researchers and practitioners over time, and tailoring training to strengthen utilization of research findings.
Open access impact
Open access to research has been shown to accelerate the research cycle and increase citations and usage of articles. In high-energy physics, researchers have openly shared preprints for decades through arXiv, allowing findings to be rapidly built upon. Analysis of arXiv usage shows the time between preprint posting and citation has significantly decreased as open access has increased. Studies also consistently find that open access articles receive more citations, with some seeing a 600% increase, than articles hidden behind paywalls. However, journal impact factors should not be used to evaluate individual researchers or papers, as they measure prestige rather than use or quality.

Abstract
The internet era, large-scale computing and storage resources, mobile devices, social media,
and their high uptake among different groups of people, have all deeply changed the way knowledge
is created, communicated, and further deployed. These advances have enabled a radical
transformation of the practice of science, which is now more open, more global and collaborative,
and closer to society than ever. Open science has therefore become an increasingly important topic.
Moreover, as open science is actively pursued by several high-profile funders and institutions, it
has fast become a crucial matter to all researchers. However, because this widespread interest in
open science has emerged relatively recently, its definition and implementation are constantly
shifting and evolving, sometimes leaving researchers in doubt about how to adopt open science,
and which are the best practices to follow.
This article therefore aims to be a field guide for scientists who want to perform science in the
open, offering resources and tips to make open science happen in the four key areas of data, code,
publications and peer-review.
The Rationale for Open Science: Standing on the Shoulders of Giants
One of the most widely used definitions of open science originates from Michael Nielsen [1]:
“Open science is the idea that scientific knowledge of all kinds should be openly shared as early as
is practical in the discovery process”. With this in mind, the overall goal of open science is to
accelerate scientific progress and discoveries and to turn these discoveries into benefits for all. An
essential part of this process is therefore to guarantee that all sorts of scientific outputs are publicly
available, easily accessible, and discoverable for others to use, re-use, and build upon.
As Mick Watson has recently wondered, “[...] isn’t that just science?” [2]. One of the basic
premises of science is that it should be based on a global, collaborative effort, building on open
communication of published methods, data, and results. In fact, the concept of discovering truth by
building on previous findings can be traced back to at least the 12th century in the metaphor of
dwarfs standing on the shoulders of giants: “Nanos gigantum humeris insidentes”1.
While creativity and intuition are contributed to science by individuals, validation and
confirmation of scientific findings can only be reached through collaborative efforts, notably peer-
driven quality control and cross-validation. Through open inspection and critical, collective

Multidisciplinary Research
The document discusses multidisciplinary and interdisciplinary research. It defines the four forms of multidisciplinary research based on interaction level: additive, non-disciplinary, integrated, and synthetic. Additive has the lowest collaboration level while researchers work independently. Interdisciplinary research requires greater interaction and a shared research goal between researchers from different fields integrating various perspectives. The main difference is that multidisciplinary questions don't require perspectives from other fields to be answered, while interdisciplinary questions do.

Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies such as Generative AI, Image Generators and Large Language Models have had a dramatic impact on teaching, learning and assessment over the past 18 months. The most immediate threat AI posed was to Academic Integrity with Higher Education Institutes (HEIs) focusing their efforts on combating the use of GenAI in assessment. Guidelines were developed for staff and students, policies put in place too. Innovative educators have forged paths in the use of Generative AI for teaching, learning and assessments leading to pockets of transformation springing up across HEIs, often with little or no top-down guidance, support or direction.
This Gasta posits a strategic approach to integrating AI into HEIs to prepare staff, students and the curriculum for an evolving world and workplace. We will highlight the advantages of working with these technologies beyond the realm of teaching, learning and assessment by considering prompt engineering skills, industry impact, curriculum changes, and the need for staff upskilling. In contrast, not engaging strategically with Generative AI poses risks, including falling behind peers, missed opportunities and failing to ensure our graduates remain employable. The rapid evolution of AI technologies necessitates a proactive and strategic approach if we are to remain relevant.
