 What do you understand by the term
“Communication”?
Communication is sharing of
ideas, opinions, feelings and
understandings.
 Why do we communicate?
Have interaction and association.
Make someone understand our feelings
or thoughts or actions.
Control over a situation.
Bring behavioural change among the
adolescents/ families/ community including
service providers/ policy makers/ teachers etc.
DEFINITION OF COMMUNICATION
 Communication is conveying a message,
orally, verbally, written or through the
use of signs.
 Communication is the art of expressing
and exchanging ideas, feelings and
thoughts through gestures, speech or
writing.

COMMUNICATION STYLES
 There are three styles of
communication.
 Aggressive.
 Passive.
 Assertive.
AGGRESSIVE
C. Behaviour.
 Puts others down.
 Dominating.
 Bossy.
D. Nonverbal Cues.
 Points, shakes finger.
 Frowns.
 Stares.
 Loud, yelling tone of voice.
PASSIVE
A. Motoes & Belief.
 Don’t express your true feelings.
 Don’t disagree.
 Others have more rights than I do.
B. Communication Style.
 Indirect.
 Always Agree.
 Doesn’t speak up.
 Hesitant.
PASSIVE
C. Behaviours.
 Sighs a lot.
 Has difficulty in implementing plans.
D. Non Verbal Cues.
 Nods head often.
 Lack of facial expression.
 Downcast eyes.
ASSERTIVE
A. Mottoes & Belief.
 Believes self and others are valuable.
 I have rights so do others.
B. Communication Style.
 Effective, active listener.
 Checks on others feelings.
ASSERTIVE
C. Behaviour.
 Action oriented.
 Realistic in his expectations.
 Consistent.
D. Non Verbal Cues.
 Open, natural gestures.
