Writing should be in active voice when possible, use appropriate language, and be concise.
Use the point of view (first, second, or third person) required by the assignment guidelines.
Use spelling and grammar check tools to help ensure your work is error free.
Include in text citations and a reference page when the assignment requires research.
If a source is cited within the paper, then it needs to be listed on the reference page.

In Text Citations
When quoting or paraphrasing another source in your writing, you need to give credit by using an in text citation. An in text citation includes the author’s last name and the number of the reference from the reference page list. Remember, only writing assignments that include research require in text citations.
Incorporate in text citations into sentences by using signal phrases (a group of words or phrase that tells the reader someone else's thoughts or ideas follow) and/or parentheticals (source information contained in parenthesis). A well-written paragraph focuses on one idea and normally includes 1-2 in text citations. Try to use a mix of signal phrases and parentheticals to avoid sounding dull and to make sure your paper is well balanced.

Do not quote more than one sentence (approximately 25 words) at a time.
Place quotation marks at the beginning and the end of the quoted information.
Do not start a sentence with a quotation.

A rhetorical analysis assignment usually asks you to read two articles and write a paper that accomplishes
three things: 1) identifies the ideas each author is trying to communicate; 2) analyzes the techniques each
author uses to accomplish his or her purpose; and 3) compares and contrasts the authors’ approaches. The
assignment is based on the premise that all writing is aimed at a specific audience for a specific purpose. This
handout provides suggestions to assist you in the process.
Topic Selection and Research
Students are typically asked to select a topic and two articles that address that topic. Select a topic related to
your area of study or that you find especially interesting and brainstorm related issues. Take care not to make
your topic too broad, and then follow these steps:
Search the library databases to find a good selection of articles on your topic. Don’t waste time! Ask for
help if your searches yield no results. The research librarians provide valuable assistance.
It will be to your advantage if the articles you select come from sources with distinctly different
readerships (e.g., Forbes and The Nation; Audubon and The Washington Times).
Ideally, the writers of both articles should make clear, assertive arguments. Research reports, clinical
studies, or other informative writing will likely be less useful to you than more persuasive writing, as
the authors of the former tend to utilize fewer obvious rhetorical devices.
Avoid shorter articles, as they offer little for analysis.
Determining Each Author’s Purpose
Once you have selected your two articles, you are ready to begin your pre-writing activities. The
following suggestions should help you begin.
Audience analysis: For each article, examine the entire print or electronic publication. By scanning the other
articles, editor’s page, graphics, and ads, you will be able to make an informed judgment regarding the
demographics, values, and personal and political interests of the audience. Determining the overall aim of the
publication should help you consider what the article itself may be intended to accomplish.
Read with rhetorical awareness: First, read each article all the way through without making notes or
annotations. Ask yourself about the writer’s intentions, and how the writer’s choices affect you as a reader.
Often you can determine the rhetorical purpose of an author by gauging your intellectual and emotional
reactions to the presentation. If you are angry or upset, for example, the author has achieved an effect through
the use of particular rhetorical devices.
Identify the rhetorical tactics: Next, read the texts closely and make annotations with the aim of highlighting

- 1. Communication Inventory Oral/Interpersonal Communication Tara Ptasnik The Unit 1 Assignment on page 1 of your text states the primary task of this project: Complete a communication inventory. Do a self- assessment of who you are as a communicator, examining language, listening, and nonverbal communication. The Unit 1 Assignment continues by describing two key tasks that you should complete to prepare and gather materials for the final paper: 1. Keep a journal Your chapter homework assignments will involve writing about your own communication experiences in a journal-type fashion. Before you write your communication inventory, review your chapter homework submissions and reflect on these experiences. 2. Interview friends, family members, coworkers, or employers You should conduct 2-5 interviews with people you share important communication interaction with. Your interviews should focus on the topic of this paper: you as a communicator and your strengths, weaknesses, and areas to improve. Arrange the interviews and write questions ahead of time, and take notes during the interview. Quote directly from at least two of the interviews in your inventory. Using information garnered from these tasks, along with concepts and terminology found in the text, write an assessment of your communication skills. Answer these questions: • What are your strengths? • What areas for improvement do you see? • What communication skills do you most want to work on this semester? Your final inventory should meet the expectations of a standard academic essay: • An introduction with a clear thesis • Organized, well-developed, and well-structured paragraphs. Use information from the book, class discussion, interviews, and your homework like you would sources for a research paper, to explain and “prove” the assertions you are making about yourself. • Polished, edited prose with a minimum of errors Your final project submission should include: • Your interview questions and notes, clearly labeled. • 3 pages (approximately 750 words) of content. Format your essay in double-spaced Times New Roman 12-pt font with 1-inch margins. Place your last name, your instructor’s name, the class, and the date in the upper left corner of page 1. Include a centered title before your introduction. Late assignments will be accepted for one week after the due date and penalized one letter grade.
