In this presentation we will cover the outcome of that unit is, its importance, why should you have a portfolio, then we will go through existing portfolios of sound designers and music composers and last but not least, we will cover the curriculum, the content this unit will cover.
The best way to see the purpose of this unit is through its outcome, through the deliverables.
So the goal of this unit is by the end of it, all of you to have an online portfolio that is decent; not perfect, just good enough.
Now why is it important to have an online portfolio? Why should you bother building one?
First of all, because for the majority of cases that you will be looking for work, it will be a prerequisite and the first thing you will be asked to provide. Interestingly enough an online portfolio is also appreciated if not required in the academic world. I built my website when I was thinking to apply at the MIT media lab where they requested an online portfolio.Apart from that, working in the field of new media (such as sound design) usually means working in niche. On-line presence helps you to get to meet these 5,000 professionals world-wide that are dealing with this exact subject you are working on.Last but not least, a website helps us keep a tidy, nicely presentable and up-to-date collection of our work.
Now let’s go through a set of existing portfolios in the field of sound design.
Firstly there are those websites that are cool but would take some improvement.
This one for example is very good-looking however apart from the fact that it has a complex background with a very small font size for the text (later it gets even smaller), it does not have a menu. If you haven’t spent enough time on the structure and presentation of your content, visitors will pick it up and even subconsciously it will not make a good impression.
This website manages to have a clear structure and a clean design, however if we were to hide the word ‘broadcast’ and ‘sound’ the feeling it makes could span from a letting agent, to a private security firm. Here we can see the importance of creating and appropriating the right brand for your website.
Moving on to OK websites.
An ex-student of this course, Greg Thompson made an effort; put together some information about himself and pieces of his work. Visitors would probably see it could be a much better website, however it is likely they will appreciate the fact that as a young professional he did an effort.
Simon sound; interesting graphics, interesting font face, a nice media control to import his music pieces, strong brand overall. Decent however it could be considered an “overkill”.
