Communication Forms & Norms

• Who are the communicators?
• What is the purpose of their
  communication?
• What FORM of communication might they
  be using?
• What NORMS are they using (vocabulary,
  spelling, slang, sentence structure, etc.)?
In order to be an effective communicator,
    you have to be able to adapt your
communication style to fit your audience.

  -   the audience (who we are talking to).

  -   the purpose (what we set out to do).

Problem

• 6th graders don’t understand yet that you
  need to consider your audience, purpose,
  and form when communicating.
• As a result, they are writing the same way
  to their teachers as they do to their
  friends.
Solution
• Create a skit in which the characters do
  not adapt the correct NORMS of
  communication for the audience at hand.
• As a result, they get into a sticky situation
  or cause a misunderstanding.

 NORMS - vocabulary, slang, sentence structure,
   spelling, grammar, punctuation, tone, etc.
