The document discusses how enterprises can transform into responsive enterprises by embracing a model of continuous feedback and improvement powered by software. It argues that software is the key to business value and that enterprises should organize themselves as hierarchical yet flexible feedback systems. Developers are seen as the engines of growth, and decision-making should be data-driven. The responsive enterprise approach promotes agility, failure, and rapid learning from feedback to stay aligned with a changing environment.
Business Hacks to Make Creating an Operations Plan SimpleJim Muehlhausen
This document provides tips for creating an effective operations plan with simple business hacks. It recommends developing structured and repeatable processes through systems that can be followed by new employees. This lessens the impact when key people leave and allows the business to hire less skilled applicants. It suggests creating a visual workflow using tools like flowcharts, pictograms or video training to document processes. Developing proven operational systems can help businesses run more effectively with fewer costly mistakes.
This document discusses an approach called 98/2 Delegation for overcoming challenges with traditional delegation approaches. It notes that most entrepreneurs' most valuable asset is their time but that they get bottlenecked spending too much time on low-impact tasks. The 98/2 Delegation approach involves systematizing tasks, identifying the 2% that can't be delegated, and delegating the remaining 98% in order to free up time for high-impact work. Benefits include increased productivity, empowered staff, and massive productivity gains without major costs. The document advertises workbooks and coaching on this delegation approach for $199 each.

Human factors - what role should they play in Responsible CareAdvisian
Tony Geraghty's presentation examines how considering human factors can enhance safety and performance excellence in the chemical industry. It discusses James Reason's model of classifying human errors and using reliability centered maintenance (RCM) to identify vulnerabilities. The presentation provides examples of how an RCM analysis revealed issues like commissioning errors and inappropriate maintenance practices, and how addressing these issues improved a gas compressor fleet's reliability and availability. Geraghty argues that regularly questioning understanding of operations can help ensure responsible chemical production and management.

ERP stands for Enterprise Resource Planning. ERP is a single, integrated software system that manages core business processes across an entire company. In the past, different departments like warehouse, accounting, and HR used separate systems and data had to be manually re-entered in each system. With ERP, all departments share one system and single version of the truth, eliminating duplicate data entry. ERP started as systems for large companies but are now accessible for companies of all sizes.

ERP Project: Implementation Failure in HPGunjan Kalita
Hewlett Packard implemented an ERP system in 2004 to consolidate multiple legacy systems, but the project failed due to technical and process issues. This led to delayed orders, lost revenue of $160 million, and loss of market share. HP learned that ERP implementations require careful planning, testing, change management, and contingency plans. In 2005, HP successfully implemented a new ERP system from SAP after addressing the lessons from the prior failure. The new system integrated business processes and helped HP better manage its global supply chain.
Hershey Foods Corporation implemented the final phase of its enterprise-wide information system in 1999 which caused problems with customer service, warehousing, and order fulfillment. These issues were exacerbated by recent growth and shipping capacity constraints, resulting in sales and earnings falling short of expectations for the year. The rushed implementation of the system and failure to properly test it led to disruptions during Hershey's busy season.

The document provides ethics and best practices for teams implementing ERP systems. It discusses the importance of teamwork, communication, and scope management. Key points include:
1) ERP implementations require strong teamwork and knowledge sharing between members, rather than competitive environments.
2) Teams should plan their work, document progress and lessons learned, and ensure knowledge transfer between members.
3) It is important for teams to truly understand requirements by listening more than talking, especially in early stages.
4) Members should avoid "gold plating" and stay focused on core project scope to meet stakeholder needs on time.
Slip-ups toward the start of an enterprise are famously hard to settle. This is particularly valid for complex procedures like executing an ERP framework. Mistakes toward the start of the usage can fate the enterprise regardless of how well it is executed. Tragically such early mix-ups are very regular in ERP executions with frequently heartbreaking outcomes for the venture.
The document discusses common mistakes made when implementing Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) systems and provides recommendations to avoid them. It identifies 13 common ERP mistakes: 1) Poor planning, 2) Not properly vetting ERP vendors, 3) Not understanding or using key features, 4) Underestimating time and resources required, 5) Not having the right implementation team, 6) Not setting priorities, 7) Not investing in training and change management, 8) Underestimating importance of accurate data, 9) Taking a "kitchen sink" approach, 10) Not decommissioning legacy applications, 11) Not having an active load testing environment, 12) Ignoring third-party support alternatives, and 13) Not having a
ERP (enterprise resource planning) software helps organizations manage business processes and facilitates information flow across various levels of the organization. Key ERP modules focus on specific business areas like inventory, distribution, accounting, and more. ERP systems can be deployed on-premises or in the cloud. Large legacy vendors like SAP, Oracle, and Microsoft Dynamics dominate the ERP market. Recovering from a failed ERP implementation requires identifying what caused the failure, assessing the short and long-term impacts, and deciding whether to salvage the existing system or start over, while learning from past mistakes.
The document outlines 10 common reasons why half of ERP implementations fail. These include lack of proper staff training, lack of commitment from top management, insufficient resources, internal employee resistance to new systems, using a bottom-up vs top-down approach, failure to plan for future expenses, inability of vendors to provide timely customizations, lack of proper usage by some departments, wrong ERP selection, and organizations attempting to build ERP solutions themselves instead of using vendors with ERP expertise.
Companies are investing a great deal in adopting new ERP solutions, sometimes tens of millions of dollars, hoping to achieve the promised results of increased productivity, better decision-making, and more accurate processes. However, recent surveys are showing that many companies are under utilizing their ERP solutions, failing to maximize the potential to create a positive return on their investment. A recent Accenture survey of 300 senior IT professionals at the largest 2,000 companies in North America and the United Kingdom revealed these startling figures:
An ERP implementation project involves many complex phases and challenges to manage. The key phases include planning, gap analysis, configuration, testing, training, and post-implementation support. Some of the top challenges include the large project size, staffing issues, risk management, and organizational politics. Successful ERP implementations require strong executive support, focused project management, thorough testing and training, and change management to address resistance to the new system.

This white paper discusses nine common mistakes that lead to failed ERP system implementations in the public sector. The mistakes include: assuming there is natural support for the project; focusing on technology over people issues; not properly preparing by documenting current processes; trying to implement everything at once instead of in phases; providing minimal user support; underestimating resource requirements; overestimating how many "best practices" can be adopted; taking a narrow view of the project instead of considering external factors; and allowing deadlines to slip. The paper provides strategies for avoiding each mistake and successfully implementing an ERP system.
ERP implementations face many challenges that can cause them to fail or go over budget and schedule. Some key challenges include inadequate requirements definition, resistance to change from employees, lack of resources and training, unrealistic expectations, and poor project management. Careful planning and addressing these challenges are needed for a successful ERP implementation.

AngularJS is well-suited for developing single page applications (SPAs) due to its features like two-way data binding, routing capabilities, and communication with servers. It allows developing SPAs that have multiple views on a single page using different URLs. Development and testing of SPAs is faster with AngularJS as it reduces the lines of code needed and provides object-oriented design. AngularJS also seamlessly integrates with other frameworks and enables easy maintenance of SPAs.

Graspan: A Big Data System for Big Code AnalysisAftab Hussain
We built a disk-based parallel graph system, Graspan, that uses a novel edge-pair centric computation model to compute dynamic transitive closures on very large program graphs.
We implement context-sensitive pointer/alias and dataflow analyses on Graspan. An evaluation of these analyses on large codebases such as Linux shows that their Graspan implementations scale to millions of lines of code and are much simpler than their original implementations.
These analyses were used to augment the existing checkers; these augmented checkers found 132 new NULL pointer bugs and 1308 unnecessary NULL tests in Linux 4.4.0-rc5, PostgreSQL 8.3.9, and Apache httpd 2.2.18.

Microservice Teams - How the cloud changes the way we workSven Peters
A lot of technical challenges and complexity come with building a cloud-native and distributed architecture. The way we develop backend software has fundamentally changed in the last ten years. Managing a microservices architecture demands a lot of us to ensure observability and operational resiliency. But did you also change the way you run your development teams?
Sven will talk about Atlassian’s journey from a monolith to a multi-tenanted architecture and how it affected the way the engineering teams work. You will learn how we shifted to service ownership, moved to more autonomous teams (and its challenges), and established platform and enablement teams.

2. When you invest a hefty amount for implementing
an ERP solution in any organization for business
benefits, a failure would be immensely painstaking.
Statistics tells that companies have that tasted the
bitter fruit of failed implementation.Almost half of
the attempts follow the same path.
3. However, it doesn’t reduce the agony and frustration
because your hard-earned money is at stake.
Experts say that there can be myriad reasons given for a
failed implementation of ERP, but a few are common
everywhere.
When you are an entrepreneur who wants to make ERP
a grand success, it is critically important to inspect
these critical aspects beforehand.
5. Critical Aspects
There is unanimity in the opinion of all experts
who know ERP implementation in depth that the
human element is the most important.
There are always certain organizational
dynamics that encourage or discourage the
implementation process.
It determines whether you are going to enjoy a
grand success or a total fiasco.
1. Human element is the biggest contributor
6. 1. Human element is the biggest contributor ( Cont..)
When there is encouragement (and involvement)
from the top management, the enthusiasm
percolates down.
Otherwise, everybody feels that it is “somebody’s
job. As a result, “nobody” does it.
Therefore, leaders in the organization should lead
the show.
Critical Aspects
7. 2. Classic waterfall model is destined to fail
There is a great fascination (rather an obsession) for the
so-called “waterfall” model that goes in the long
sequence of identification of the problem, analyzing the
solution, arriving at the consensus of everyone and then
picking the most appropriate ERP solution.
Implementation, adaptation and refinement follow
thereafter. No wonder, people get frustrated with it and
lose interest very soon.
Critical Aspects
8. 3. Scarcity of resources
A large number of experts blame scarcity of
resources for a sure shot failure of ERP
implementation. It sounds strange but true. In the
majority of organizations, ERP implementation team
works on a part-time basis.
Since the team members are valuable operational
resources, it is not possible to spare them full-time
for this “noble” cause.
Critical Aspects
9. 3. Scarcity of resources (Cont..)
They are forced to work on ERP, over and
above the normal responsibilities.
Moreover, there is no relaxation in targets
or KRA.
This approach is going to be unsuccessful;
there is no doubt about it.When people are
allowed to work wholeheartedly for ERP,
they come off with flying colors.
Critical Aspects
10. 4. Implementation without experts
Do you think ERP is something that can be
implemented reading a DIY kind book? Certainly
not! It is full-fledged software which needs a
systematic way of implementation.
However, in a majority of the organizations, the
work is left at the mercy of a handful of
operational and managerial people
Critical Aspects
11. 4. Implementation without experts (Cont...)
Critical Aspects
They undergo a few weeks of training and
organizations expect them to be ERP
experts. A successful implementation is
possible when a seasoned consultant is
hired.
He makes sure that it happens in a
systematic and step-by-step manner.
12. 5. Inertia for change
Critical Aspects
It is a common factor that organizations show a great
resistance for ERP.
It is because they feel that there will be a massive
change in the organizational structure and workflow.
As a result, the majority of people resist to it.
13. 6. Picking up an inappropriate Solution
Critical Aspects
Last, but not the least; choosing an incorrect
ERP solution is a major reason organizations
fail to implement it.
Therefore, a thorough analysis should be
done before you choose the ERP in the
organization.
