4. RATING SYSTEM OF LEED
LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) is a green building rating system that evaluates the
sustainability and environmental impact of buildings.
The cateories in the LEED rating system include:
Objective:
The LEED rating system is designed to encourage sustainable
design and construction practices and to promote environmentally responsible buildings
5. LOCATION AND TRANSPORTATION (LT)
Location and transportation are one of the
categories in the LEED rating system
It evaluates the sustainable transportation
options available at the project site
Encourages the reduction of vehicle use
Greenhouse gas emissions.
GOAL: The goal is to reduce the environmental impact
of transportation by promoting sustainable transportation
options and reducing vehicle emissions.
6. Credits and Prequisites
Some examples of credits and prerequisites in the Location and Transportation
category include:
Sustainable Sites:
This prerequisite requires a building to be located on a site that meets
specific sustainability criteria
• such as avoiding development on sensitive land or protecting water
resources.
Access to Quality Transit:
• This credit rewards buildings that are located within a certain distance of
public transportation, such as a bus stop or train station.
Bicycle Facilities:
• This credit rewards buildings that provide bicycle parking and other
amenities to encourage cycling as a transportation option.
Reduced Parking Footprint:
•This credit rewards buildings that reduce the number of parking
spaces provided, in order to encourage the alternate means of
tranportations.
7. CREDIT FOR ALTERNATIVE TRANSPORTATION
To achieve this credit, a project
must meet one of the following
requirements:
Option 1:
Reduce the total parking capacity of the project site by 20%
below the baseline parking requirements.
Option 2:
Provide preferred parking spaces for carpools and vanpools, and
provide priority parking for low-emitting and fuel-efficient
vehicles.
Option 3:
Provide secure bicycle storage and shower/locker facilities for building
occupants and visitors.
Option 4:
Develop a Transportation Demand Management (TDM) plan to reduce
single-occupancy vehicle (SOV) trips and encourage the use of alternative
transportation modes.
Option 5:
Locate the project within a 1/2 mile radius (or 1/4 mile radius in urban
areas) of an existing or planned public transportation stop.
This credit recognizes buildings that promote alternative modes of transportation to
reduce greenhouse gas emissions and improve air quality.
CONCULUSION:

transportation
• Building projects can help reduce the
carbon footprint of transportation,
• Improve air quality
• Promote healthy lifestyles for building
occupants.
• Lead to cost savings for building owners
and occupants
• Reducing the need for parking spaces and
vehicle-related expenses.
8. SUSTAINABLE SITE
Sustainable Sites Promotes
land development and
management practices with
our future in mind.
Sustainable SITES
generates less waste,
minimizes impact on the
landscape, and uses less
energy, water, and natural
resources.
9. Site Management Policy
INTENT
To preserve ecological integrity and encourage
environmentally
sensitive site management practices that provide a clean, well-
maintained, and safe building exterior while supporting high-
performance
building operations and integration into the surrounding
landscape.
BEHIND THE INTENT
Good exterior maintenance practices can significantly
affect a project site and its surroundings. Site management
best practices not only protect soil, water, and air resources
but also yield economic benefits
STEPS TO FOLOW
1. Review best management practices.
2. Gather information on current site management practices.
3. Identify site management goals and objective.
4. Create performance metrics and assign responsibilities to
team members.
5. Write site management policy.
6. Adopt site management policy.
REQUIRED DOCUMENTATION:
Site management policy document
Justification for operational elements not included
in policy
10. Site Development—
Protect or Restore Habitat
INTENT:
To conserve existing natural areas and restore damaged areas to
provide habitat and promote biodiversity.
BEHIND THE INTENT:
When site constraints prevent on-site restoration, consider off-
site conservation and restoration. An off-site approach may provide
greater total ecosystem benefits than could otherwise be achieved
on site. For projects that are unable to provide large, contiguous
parcels of on-site land for long-term conservation, providing
financial support to a recognized land trust or conservation
organization can be an effective tool.
CHANGES FROM LEED 2009
The calculation for the native vegetation threshold has
changed to 20% of the total site area (including the building
footprint) and a minimum of 5,000 square feet (465 square
meters).
The off-site option was replaced with an option for financial
support
STEPS TO FOLOW
Option 1. On-Site Restoration
1. Calculate site area required to have native or adapted
vegetation.
2. Facilitate restoration.
Option 2. Financial Support
1. Determine amount of financial support.
2. Identify qualifying partner organization.
REQUIRED DOCUMENTS:
Description of native or adapted vegetation.
Site plan indicating the project boundary, building
footprint(s), site area, areas vegetated with native or adapted
vegetation, and plant list.
Agreement with land trust or conservation organization.
U.S. projects: Confirmation that land trust is accredited by
Land Trust Alliance
Confirmation that financial support will continue to be
provided annually.
11. Rainwater Management
INTENT:
To reduce runoff volume and improve water quality by
replicating the natural hydrology and water balance of the
site, based on historical conditions and undeveloped
ecosystems in the region.
BEHIND THE INTENT:
Conventional site development disrupts natural
hydrological systems and watersheds through
impervious surfaces,
soil compaction, loss of vegetation, and loss of
natural drainage patterns. The cumulative effect of
these changes
is disruption to the natural water balance and a loss of
water resources. Typically, a conventional site’s
rainwater
management technique is to address runoff as a
byproduct to be disposed of by piping and conveying
it as quickly as
possible into centralized, large facilities at the base of
drainage areas.
STEPS TO FOLLOW:
Obtain rainfall data for project location.
Determine value for 95th-percentile rainfall events.
Analyze existing site conditions and performance.
Calculate runoff volume to be managed on site.
Manage runoff volume on site.
Analyze and refine rainwater management strategies.
Develop and implement an annual inspection program of all
rainwater management facilities.
REQUIRED DOCUMENTS:
Rain Fall data.
Rainfall events calculator or calculations for 95th percentile
storm.
Calculations for runoff volume from 25% of impervious area.
Narrative confirming that measures qualify as GI or LID.
Documents or narrative about inspections and maintenance
12. Heat Island Reduction
INTENT
To minimize effects on microclimates and
human and wildlife habitats by reducing heat
islands.
BEHIND THE INTENT
The most effective measure of a roofing
material’s ability to reject solar heat is the solar
reflectance index (SRI). However, to measure
the solar heat rejection of components that are
not roofing materials, or “nonroof ”—for
example, vegetation, shading devices, and other
less reflective components—solar reflectance
(SR) is used in this credit Instead.
STEPS TO FOLLOW:
1. Identify parking, hardscape, and roof area.
2. Identify areas of existing and planned heat
island mitigation measures.
3. Select one option
Option 1. Non roof
1. Evaluate compliance.
2. Incorporate additional mitigation strategies, if necessary.

reduce thE consequences of development
For wild life and people.
BEHIND THE INTENT
This credit addresses two forms of light pollution:
up lighting and light trespass. lamp shielding for
luminaires with the highest lamp lumen levels
reduces the amount of unwanted light pollution
escaping into the night sky. To minimize light
trespass, illumination levels at the site boundary
should be maintained at specific thresholds.
