3. What is
Common Core
• The Common Core Standards were a
result of a state-led effort coordinated by
the National Governors Association.
Representatives from participating
states, as well as a wide range of
educators, content experts, and
researchers, have worked to develop
these standards that are research-based
and internationally benchmarked.
• A State-led initiative
• Voluntary in adoption with ability to add
additional standards
• Provide a clear, consistent statewide
understanding of what students should
know and be able to do
• In New York State, the Common Core
include standards for students in pre-
kindergarten through 12th grade in
English Language Arts and Math.

4. What states are a part of the
Common Core?
45 states and 3 territories have adopted
the Common Core Standards.
States highlighted in green have
adopted the Common Core State
Standards.
States highlighted in blue only
adopted the Common Core State
Standards for English Language Arts.
The National Governors Association
brought together a group of content
experts, teachers, researchers, and
others to develop the Common Core
standards.
CC States 4
The group released drafts of the
standards for public feedback in 2009
and 2010. Teachers, parents, and
others submitted almost 10,000
comments on the draft standards.
Based on that feedback, the
standards were revised and the final
standards were released in June
2010. New York adopted the
standards on July 19, 2010.

5. Why Common Core?
It was found that students entering college were requiring a
high level of remediation. So the Common Core seeks to:
• Ensure all students are college and career ready
• Are prepared citizens and contributors
• Ensure that the value of a high school diploma is
consistent
• Be competitive in a global economy
• Produce rigorous and complex thinkers who have
opinions and support arguments

6. Changes to State Testing
• This year standardized testing
will include Common Core
standards
• 2014 –15 school year, State tests
will look very different. New
York is working with a group of
23 other states to develop tests
that require students to
demonstrate their knowledge and
skills through a new kind of
question, known as a performance
task.

9. How can you help
at home?
1. Read to your child or have them
read to you, for at least 15minutes
daily. Discuss words that have
multiple or complex meanings.
2. Ask your child to retell the story in
their own words in the order things
occurred.

12. How can you help
at home?
1. Use everyday objects to allow your child to
explore the concept of fractions. Example,
have your child divide a granola bar between
three people. Ask, “How much does each
person receive?” Suppose there are three
granola bars that you plan to share with two
friends. Have your child describe the amount
that each person will receive.
2. Have your child explain how to write fractions
in different ways. What are some different
ways to write 4⁄3 ? He or she could answer
4÷3, 1 1⁄3, 2⁄3 + 2⁄3, 2 x 2⁄3, 8⁄6, 4x1⁄3 , etc.
3. Ask your child to give you a fraction equal to
a decimal. For example, what are two
fractions that can be used to represent 0.6?
Answers could include 6⁄10, 60⁄100, 12⁄20 , or
3⁄5.
4. Encourage your child to stick with it
whenever a problem seems difficult and praise
your child when he or she makes an effort
5. Share in the excitement when he or she solves
a problem or understands something for the
first time.
