          Complete Topic Quiz (due Sunday)

       Complete Week 1 Quiz (due Sunday)

Required Materials
   (NIC Customized) Public Speaking for
    College & Career (9th ed), Hamilton
    Gregory
   You can share textbooks.
            All COMM101 sections use the same textbook.
   NIC COMM101 Workbook
       Purchase at NIC bookstore or print BB
   USB (flashdrive) for recording speeches
       Minimum 1 gb
Attendance Policy
   2 absences are allowed
      3rd and 4th absence -50 points per each
     5 absences = drop or fail


   Everyone must take the final
     Online, open for 2 days
     Book and classroom material


   NIC student athlete’s responsibility to inform
    me of schedule ASAP. So that I may help you
    to succeed in this course.
What types of speeches?
   1st Speech: Speech to Inform (no visual aids)
      Topic: Your Choice!
      5-6 min.

   2nd Speech: Speech to Inform with Visual Aid
      Topic: Your Choice!
      6-8 min.

   3rd Speech: Speech to Motivate Action
      Topic: Your Choice!
      8-10 min.

      Students are required to deliver the minimum three
      speeches to pass COMM101. Failure to do so will result
      in the student not passing COMM101.
How are the points assigned?

   Speeches
   Outlines
   Self Analysis
   Peer Evaluations
       Posted online
   Quizzes re: textbook chapters
       Taken online
Late Assignments
   If time permits, students may make up speeches
    but lose 25% from grade! (eg. “A” work earns a
    “C”)
   Late assignments are not worthless…they
    are simply worth less.
     Deducted 25% each calendar day after deadline
     More than four days late = 0% credit
Zero Tolerance for Cheating!

   Any unethical behavior, including any instance
    of plagiarism, may result in failure of the course.

   You are welcome to use research
    (assignments, etc.) you completed from
    another class for your speeches.

        1-2 minutes
    1.   Start by getting our attention:
              Share your favorite quote or an interesting and unique fact
               about yourself
    2.   Tell us your biggest fear regarding this class
    3.   Tell us about the last time you had to speak in public
    4.   Tell us about yourself:
              What was life like for you growing up?
              What’s your life like now?
              What do you see yourself doing 5 years from now?
    5.   Wrap up by tying everything back to whatever you said first

  • 1. Welcome to COMM101 Section 19 MW 3:00 pm. – 4:15 pm. WEBE (Web Enhanced Delivery) Introduction to Speech Communication
  • 2. Today:  Complete all housekeeping items  Roster, syllabus, website, textbook/handbook, etc.  Discuss Intro Speech  Next class  Introduction Speeches  To do this week:  Familiarize yourself with the Angel site  Complete Read & Respond assignment  Compose, deliver introduction  Read chapters 1,2 15  Select a topic for Speech #1  Complete Topic Quiz (due Sunday)  Complete Week 1 Quiz (due Sunday)
  • 3. What will you learn:  Effectively research, develop, and present three speeches adapted to this audience  Become a better listener  Enhance delivery techniques  Gain confidence speaking in front of a group

  • 5. Required Materials  (NIC Customized) Public Speaking for College & Career (9th ed), Hamilton Gregory  You can share textbooks.  All COMM101 sections use the same textbook.  NIC COMM101 Workbook  Purchase at NIC bookstore or print BB  USB (flashdrive) for recording speeches  Minimum 1 gb
  • 6. Attendance Policy  2 absences are allowed  3rd and 4th absence -50 points per each  5 absences = drop or fail  Everyone must take the final  Online, open for 2 days  Book and classroom material  NIC student athlete’s responsibility to inform me of schedule ASAP. So that I may help you to succeed in this course.
  • 7. What types of speeches?  1st Speech: Speech to Inform (no visual aids)  Topic: Your Choice!  5-6 min.  2nd Speech: Speech to Inform with Visual Aid  Topic: Your Choice!  6-8 min.  3rd Speech: Speech to Motivate Action  Topic: Your Choice!  8-10 min. Students are required to deliver the minimum three speeches to pass COMM101. Failure to do so will result in the student not passing COMM101.
  • 8. How are the points assigned?  Speeches  Outlines  Self Analysis  Peer Evaluations  Posted online  Quizzes re: textbook chapters  Taken online
  • 9. Late Assignments  If time permits, students may make up speeches but lose 25% from grade! (eg. “A” work earns a “C”)  Late assignments are not worthless…they are simply worth less.  Deducted 25% each calendar day after deadline  More than four days late = 0% credit
  • 10. Zero Tolerance for Cheating!  Any unethical behavior, including any instance of plagiarism, may result in failure of the course.  You are welcome to use research (assignments, etc.) you completed from another class for your speeches.
  • 11. Center for Educational Access/Disability Support Services  If a student would like to request accommodations, he or she must contact the Center for Educational Access so that a Letter of Accommodation may be sent to the instructor. Keys to your Success  Respect others  Listen to your instructor and fellow classmates.  Leave cell phones and pagers on stun during class.  Do NOT text-message during class.  Take responsibility for your own actions  Be Prepared  Come to class regularly, turn-in assignments on time  Check your NIC student email regularly  Make a genuine EFFORT!

Blackboard E-Learning Site  Bookmark Link on NIC.EDU or MyNIC  Syllabus, detailed course calendar, quizzes, peer evaluations, power point lectures, and handouts discussed in class will be available on our BB course site.  Should you miss a class, refer to this site for information you missed in class.
  • 14. Introduction “speech”  1-2 minutes 1. Start by getting our attention:  Share your favorite quote or an interesting and unique fact about yourself 2. Tell us your biggest fear regarding this class 3. Tell us about the last time you had to speak in public 4. Tell us about yourself:  What was life like for you growing up?  What’s your life like now?  What do you see yourself doing 5 years from now? 5. Wrap up by tying everything back to whatever you said first
