Finding a game in a hotel room to entertain bored kids

1. Hotel Room

kids…
All you need is a ‘bat’ and
a ‘bird’ to win a prize from
the mini bar…

2. Sport:
Requires a challenge to be overcome by skill
May have rules to guide the player
May use specialist equipment
May be played individually, with an opponent
or in teams
May have a winner and a prize

3. Take one hotel room…and
explore ‘specialist’ equipment
 Hairdryer – extension of body, pushes/lifts,
needs power
 Coat hanger/pen/note pad/slippers/room
service menu – club/racket/bat
 Coffee bag – puck/ball
 Tissues – can be shaped into birds
 Tables/beds – playing arena
 Rubbish bin – goal
 Mini bar – rewards/prizes

4. Hairdryer games…

5. Boredom Buster for kids…(one
or more players)
 Parents: Identify the prize – bottle of soda or candy
from mini bar (motivation)
 Parents: Allocate points to gain the prize – don’t
make it too easy
 Kids: Prepare the bird - tie diagonal ends of one
tissue together into a bird shape and ‘fluff’ out
wings
 Plug in hairdryer (best if plug is between two beds)
 Kids: Sit on one bed and turn hairdryer on low
 Kids Practice – Aviate the bird to the other bed
 Parents: Identify other landing spots and rank their
degree of difficulty…

6.  Parents: Allocate points to each landing spot (eg 5
points for the opposite bed, 10 points for the chair, 15
points for the TV cabinet, 20 points for the rubbish bin
which can be moved to provide extra levels of
difficulty etc)
 Parents: Create rules if required – eg deducting
points if the bird lands on the floor
 Challenge Variables: speed of hairdryer, length of
power cord, ability to move from sitting position
 Risks: hairdryer requires power and may get hot so
game is not suitable for small children – alternative
‘bats’ for aviating the birds include coat-hangers,
pens, note pads, slippers if provided, room service
menu…
