There are several color schemes for arranging colors including monochromatic, complementary, analogous, split complementary, triadic, and tetradic. A monochromatic scheme uses tints and shades of a single color. Complementary colors are directly across from each other on the color wheel. Analogous colors are adjacent to each other on the color wheel. A split complementary scheme uses a base color and the two colors on either side of its complement. A triadic scheme uses three colors evenly spaced around the color wheel. A tetradic scheme uses four colors.
