William Bradford was an English leader who served as governor of the Plymouth Colony for over 30 years after John Carver died. As governor, Bradford kept a journal from 1620 to 1647 called Of Plymouth Plantation. Bradford is also credited as the first civil authority to designate what is now commonly known as the Thanksgiving holiday in the United States. John Smith was a soldier, explorer, and author born in 1580 who led an exploration of Virginia and the Chesapeake Bay after being a leader of the Virginia Colony between 1608 and 1609.
