innovation
• Why not?
Columbus Recreation & Parks had 85 races permitted in 2013, over 125 in 2014. Columbus Metro Parks (15 parks in central Ohio) reached their 2015 limit of 60 scheduled events system-wide by February 1. Our main competitor hosted or timed over 215 different events in 2014, we hosted or timed just under 50.
Being an organization with a fewer race partners has allowed us to spend more time with each partner to help them design an event that’s right for them.
Transition of the event management arm of the business to a dedicated model
Consistent staffing for events – knowledgeable employees allow for less time with everyday processes, and more time available for customizing events
Standardized race information and registration sites – answer common questions before they’re asked
Results publishing – our standard went from “2pm on race day”, to “within 3 hrs of start time,” to “before we leave the event site” to now being “as each runner crosses the finish line.”
In our last 10 events that have had result notifications enabled, we’re averaging just under 1.1 notifications per registrant. When removing the high-end outlier that had this feature promoted multiple times over many months earning 1.8 notifications per registrant, the remaining 9 events averaged just under 0.7 notifications per registrant.
Finisher’s certificates can be as simple or complex as you want!
Video integration couldn’t be simpler
Dynamic bib assignment – with four locations and many early packet pickup events using more than one store, this enables all our locations to work simultaneously and safely in the same database
Login per location is nice to track at a glance where the action is happening, as well as plan appropriately for future years.
Real-time updating of both registration information and check-in information has made our race-week processes much smoother.
The power and tools allow us to focus on our job – event directors/timers/etc, not web service technicians
Integrated technology can provide for event growth – instead of multiple platforms for race registration, volunteers, email management, results, deliverables – one!
Commitment to service, excellence, and innovation – SERVICE – emailed about a calendar widget issue on a Friday night at 9pm. Fix was in place by 10:30pm. EXCELLENCE – one of my favorite things to say when I leave a good retail shopping experience and they always ask you “did you find everything you need?” is “yes, and I found a bunch of things I didn’t even know I needed.” RunSignUp has been that kind of experience for me. I’m finding new ways to apply RSU technology all the time, in part because of their INNOVATION – I get regular and irregular emails from plenty of technology vendors. It seems a favorite technique in these emails is to tell the end user what’s coming down the pipeline and sometimes these things are like “tomorrow” in that they never get here. RSU sends out a monthly newsletter that highlights the many things they’ve accomplished in the past month, complete with links to blog posts detailing how to use the new features (sometimes with video), case studies, and interesting articles highlighting industry trends, etc.
