To understand how to expand education abroad opportunities, we need to understand who is not going abroad. Presenters will share what they've done (or are doing) to expand participation with respect to the barriers of cost, curriculum, and culture. Participants will be invited to share best practices on how to change perception and make study abroad – academic study, work, or internships – more accessible. Case studies will include the Clemson Engineers for Developing Countries (CEDC) Haiti Initiative, an innovative student-directed program; Susquehanna University, which made study away a curricular requirement; and Medgar Evers College, the only Predominantly Black College (PBI) in the City University of New York, will explain how a one-person office has increased the numbers of underrepresented students going abroad.

The student-researcher implemented two cycles of support groups with 12 Korean international students over 8 weekly sessions. Data was collected through questionnaires, interviews, journals and feedback. Results indicated the groups helped students feel less isolated and more comfortable discussing challenges. Limitations included a lack of literature on this topic and short time frame. The student-researcher learned building rapport is key and plans to advocate for international students and continue educating themselves.

Brokering practices among EAL international students
Academic challenges of international students, particularly those with English as an additional language (EAL), have been mostly researched in the classroom context, with little attention paid to students’ informal learning practices. My research looks specifically at the brokering practices of EAL tertiary students in their understanding of academic literacy. Brokering refers to how students seek help from their peers about understanding academic knowledge and skills. I conducted semi-structured interviews and observations to find out who students approached for help, aspects of academic literacy they needed help with, and their perceptions of the experience. The research findings suggest that educators need to pay attention to how students seek peer support in academic learning in order to develop more effective ways of supporting students’ academic literacy needs.

Racial/ethnic diversity in study abroad increased 10 percent from 2004 to 2014. Despite the increase, study abroad continues to fall low on students of color’s priority list. Irrespective of their rationale for not going, students of color continue to receive fewer messages that study abroad is worthwhile. To fill this gap, panelists in this session will argue that faculty involvement – particularly faculty of color– in the planning process and while on-site is imperative. The inclusion will allow students to see themselves reflected in study abroad programs and may increase the likelihood that students will participate. This session will feature multiple perspectives to demonstrate the important ways to utilize faculty in the effort to increase student of color participation.

This study explored perceived barriers to international student transitions in higher education in the United States. The researchers interviewed three non-degree seeking undergraduate international students at a Southeastern university. The interviews focused on perceived barriers in academics, language, discrimination, and finances. Most comments from students were about academic and social experiences, with more negative than positive experiences discussed overall. The greatest perceived barriers centered around language issues, with 89% of language-related comments being negative. Initial communication, financial issues, and academics also posed mostly negative barriers, while social experiences were least negative.
