The film American Pie Presents: Beta House follows two rival groups, the Beta House and the geeks, as they compete to recruit new members and be popular. The Beta House, led by Dwight Stifler, is focused on partying and attracting women through reckless behavior. The geeks, led by Edgar Willis, try to one-up them through clever schemes. An older character, Jim's father, acts as a mentor figure to the students while still embracing his wild side. Through exaggerated hijinks and sexual humor, the film portrays college as non-stop partying, downplaying academics to focus on teenage escapades for comedic effect.
1. -828675-82867500The film that I chosen to do my collective identity on is American pie beta house.
American Pie Presents: Beta House is a 2007 teen comedy film, the sixth film in the American Pie franchise, the third in the American Pie Presents: franchise.
The film is spilt into binary opposites from the start to end rivals the beta house and the geeks are divided in their own sections and want popularity for the life of partying.
The setting / mise en scene of narrative is very steortypical on teenagers as college (university in British language) is a big party full of attractive teenagers as you can on the front cover. The beta house is basically like a nightclub where male and female can party and drink excessive amounts. More or less the main casts relate to sexual connotations e.g. the girls in the beta house scene dress scene revealing upper body and short skirts influences the male gaze. The beta house and geeks have attractive women also the same age in their environments as more popularity for the male gender / gaze is at these places. So overall both of these houses are trying to get as much male and female activity in their venue for the popularity factor.
An influence of a similarity of British film due to mise en scene and the format and structure is focusing on the young adult culture / university and the party and social life. A good example of a similarity is the TV series skins; it focuses on the teenage life but in a negative and more in depth due to graphical contents such as sex and drugs which aspirates a powerful dramatic atmosphere. American pie is more over execrated and the comedy hides the negative elements and it’s more of a fun atmosphere where noting serious can go wrong. In other words there is no boundaries, basically everything goes e.g. at the end the Greek Olympiads and the tasks that they have to complete in competition kind of like a game but much more graphical in the ways the films represents.
The representation that people would get is that teenagers want to party in stead of being in the world. Beta house isolates mainly the older generation of the world and focuses on the life and culture of teenage social activities mediated in a daily life and comes of in a positive element due to being over the top.
The characters are basically split up the story of the film due to experiences and what they’ve had to go through. It stereotypes role modals and that the teenagers who start begin to follow them e.g. the tasks that they have to fill out in order to become part of the club / beta house.
This graph identifies the structure of popularity in the cast;
-908685333692500928048117370700-914400186753500478663021183600026130254601845001271905-423545003190875211391500
33356552225040REF 400REF 4
14164496989050
10699754575810REF 300REF 344945304699635REF 200REF 2
39941506960235REF 100REF 1
So as you can see the narrative structure follows in a simple layout cycle and the audience is clear of reading each teenage character role.
REF 1: John white aka in film – Erik stifler is a basic teenager who has just qualified for college. His older brother (ref 2) is head of the beta house and looks up to him for guidance throughout the story. Basically by completing tasks and the life of the beta house in order to become a member of the organisation. This shows that he is weak and insecure of experience of what’s going on but the influence through his brother is a role modal that makes him become part of the family.
REF 2: Steve Talley aka Dwlight stifler is the leader of the beta house. This shows that he is dominant in experience and that he’s no how to control this club. In the club however due to the teenage trends he comes across as cocky, confident, and intimidating due to other male members maybe because he is the leader. They mediate this in the way not being as smart which could be mediated stereotypes of being cool or not cool which some age range will find it positive or negative.
He comes across very expressive towards female and is very flirty which shows a strong teenage serotype, that males want to get with female and have one night stands according to this mediation of the narrative of the film.
Dwlight stifler view on teenage trends is very oppositional, he is a dominant and helping character but for the wrong reasons of the elements shown in the film which some viewers may find offensive.
In the other recent films stlifer was in American pie, American pie two, and American pie the wedding had the older stilfer so really the same jesters are passed down to generation after generation, which shows another stereotype that younger brothers look up and copy there older brothers. This shows generation in terms of representation and shows the dominance as stilfer was one of the main and popular character in the recent films.
REF 3: Tyrone Savage as Edgar Willis has basically the same role as Dwlight stifler but due to being in a different representation he fulfills and leads the group of nerds. Nerds is a very stereotypical outlook upon teenagers, they are viewed as UN cool but however have a major advantage of being clever and intelligent. How this film gives the geeks mostly Edger wills a good response is that they are in the same battle of recruiting girls. The films mediates again that they have attractive girls and their venue is a lot more richer and higher class than the beta house so as you can see there are different outcomes and elements which changes the audiences opinions. They are binary opposites but both translate into the oppositional narrative of people answering is this good or bad due to sexual connotations.
Overall Edgar gives off the same representational elements the same as Dwlight, the only difference is that they are arched nemesis, kind of like a play school ground where one person does not like the other due to jealously or other associated reason which can give of immaturity and shows the teenage culture In a lower class compared to the society of the real world.
He shows dominance in the geek house making him popular and that he is respected by all the other geeks members, but the twist at the ending shows his true immaturity and a major dilemma which makes him really un cool which shows teenagers have a very two faced outlook as they only look up to popular trends.
REF 4: (……………..) is basically the mature farther role. He shows that he has been in the same situations and lifestyle of the teenage culture mediated in the films as he is in every single one of them. He is a the main man as he owns the beta house and is the host of the Greek Olympiads which makes him a main role modal and that the teenagers look up towards him and obey and respect what he says so there is discipline in the film and interests the adult audience as it results as being positive . But he is humble as he helps out the teenage cast in the film. And it’s basically saying that even when you’re old you can still have fun. He is the wise man also and is addressed as a hero e.g. he gets them out of jail.
Overall he shows that he is matured but the teenage elements are still in him and the audience can read clearly as he socializes and helps the teenagers as he been through the same elements which generates a connection in a life cycle and teenage and adult can talk even if the adults. He is the most dominant as he is the most experienced and teenagers look up towards him.
Overall American pie shows that the teenage life is a big party and that its ok that they can do this if they keep to a certain boundaries e.g. list. The rules are negative and aimed at being popular as if you don’t do them you don’t become a member of the beta house, it’s a forced element which teenagers do and want to be in the group. As the beta house has attractive females, booze, music what more could they ask for.
It mediated that if teenagers go to university (or in American terms college) that it’s one big party and its always fun through out the whole time they are there. It does not show the studying side and the actual element of being in university which shows the negative stereotypes in the film as they will end up with noting. But then due to popular trends they aim to aspire to be REF 4 and still be part of the origination and still be popular and rich, but in the real world this would not happen.
It shows the good life of being teenagers but there due to the boundaries in today society they look up upon this being very negative and adults are protesting against it.
But due to REF 3 having a connection with REF 4 it shows that both age ranges can get along which gives this whole film off as a comedy and over the top. It does show boundaries e.g. the Greek Olympiads being banned but then for the film being successful the event was held under the circumstances of REF 4 as he has done it, so it shows that is it really suitable to a certain extent.
American pie is negative but then is mediated into the genre of comedy so that audiences can just endure what extreme hazards teenagers can go to but in the real world is would be very negative and less likely to happen due to laws. The actions, speech, and body language come over the top which backs up the negatives and appeals to the audience as just entertainment.
