A 4-story reinforced concrete building collapsed in Begunbari, Bangladesh on June 1, 2010 at 11 PM, killing 19 people. The building was constructed in 1999 without engineering and had insufficient ties in the columns. The structure was built on recently filled land and had a soft ground floor, short columns, and poor connections to the foundation. Heavy materials stored on the top floor may have also contributed to the collapse. Many vulnerable structures remain in the area.
