Third Graders “Make Halloween
Count” Project
Our School Challenge
The third grade students in Miss Hassanzadeh’s
class decided to “make Halloween count” by
raising money for UNICEF.
• Prior to raising the money, our class learned a
little more about UNICEF and its purpose. We
discussed the UNICEF program and how it is
designed to help children in need who have
barely have any clean clothes, water, shelter,
food or education.
Our Classroom Lessons
• We began by discussing the difference
between a need and want. I tied this all into a
social studies economy lesson.
• I used visual media in my classroom and
showed my students a few videos about the
UNICEF program and how it benefits a child in
need.
Brainstorming
• We first began with brainstorming different ideas
about the best way to raise money and make a
difference in the lives of children.
• We decided to hold a few different fundraising
activities and sell them on the night of our school
Trick and Trot.
1. We would sell popcorn for 50 cents and
give all proceeds to UNICEF.
2. We would advertise a prize basket and
sell tickets for 25 cents each.
Flyers/Posters
• My third grade class made posters to advertise
the different events taking place to benefit
UNICEF.
• They designed posters about the raffle and
selling popcorn. The posters had to describe
the purpose of UNICEF and how our school
was going to help make a difference by raising
money.
The Fundraiser
• During the week prior to the fundraiser, we advertised the popcorn
and tickets on the intercom and over the morning announcements.
• My students went to all the classrooms in my school and shared
about our school UNICEF school challenge. They read…
“During next weeks Trick and Trot, the third graders from
Miss Hassanzadeh’s class will be collecting money to donate
to an organization called UNICEF. UNICEF works to help
millions of kids all over the world who don't have clean water
to drink, food, or medicine. We will have a table set up at the
Trick and Trot to sell popcorn for 50 cents. All proceeds will
go to UNICEF. In addition, there will be a raffle going on
that night. It will cost 25 cents to purchase a ticket for a
chance to have your name drawn for the prize basket. We
hope to see you there!”
The Night of the Trick and Trot
• On the night of the Trick and Trot, some of my
students volunteered to help with the
fundraiser and so we set up a table in the
cafeteria and awaited the crowd.
• In the mean time, I walked around the school
with my Trick and Treat for UNICEF “box
costume” and advertised our table.
The Results of the Trick and Trot
• After the Trick and Trot, we raised $97.56. The
turn out was excellent. Parents and students
were eager to help fundraise for a great cause.
• The school donated popcorn for the
fundraiser and I purchased goodies
(notepads, pencils, dry erase
markers, candy, bracelets, erasers, pens, a gift
card, and 3 restaurant coupons for the prize
basket).
The Prize Box
• On Friday morning, I drew a name from the
prize box fundraiser basket and announced
the winning students name over the intercom.

• Our class/school made $24.50 from selling
prize box tickets for 25 cents each.
Trick or Treat for UNICEF in the
Classroom
• Another activity my class participated in was
letter writing. My students wrote about the
importance of donating for UNICEF and about the
meaning of UNICEF. These letters were persuasive
and written to inform an audience “written to
me” about the great cause.
• Their letters were sent home for their parents to
read.
• Here are a few examples of the students’ letters
in the next following slides.
THANK YOU!
• UNICEF is a big part of my life (personally) and I
participate in trick or treat for UNICEF each year
by incorporating it into my classroom. I am happy
to say this year was the most successful and
valuable for my students'. It was a learning
experience and turned into a small school
community project.

we can MAKE A CHANGE!

Coldwater UNICEF Challenge

  • 1. Third Graders “Make Halloween Count” Project
  • 2. Our School Challenge The third grade students in Miss Hassanzadeh’s class decided to “make Halloween count” by raising money for UNICEF. • Prior to raising the money, our class learned a little more about UNICEF and its purpose. We discussed the UNICEF program and how it is designed to help children in need who have barely have any clean clothes, water, shelter, food or education.
  • 3. Our Classroom Lessons • We began by discussing the difference between a need and want. I tied this all into a social studies economy lesson. • I used visual media in my classroom and showed my students a few videos about the UNICEF program and how it benefits a child in need.

Brainstorming • We first began with brainstorming different ideas about the best way to raise money and make a difference in the lives of children. • We decided to hold a few different fundraising activities and sell them on the night of our school Trick and Trot. 1. We would sell popcorn for 50 cents and give all proceeds to UNICEF. 2. We would advertise a prize basket and sell tickets for 25 cents each.
  • 6. Flyers/Posters • My third grade class made posters to advertise the different events taking place to benefit UNICEF. • They designed posters about the raffle and selling popcorn. The posters had to describe the purpose of UNICEF and how our school was going to help make a difference by raising money.
  • 7. The Fundraiser • During the week prior to the fundraiser, we advertised the popcorn and tickets on the intercom and over the morning announcements. • My students went to all the classrooms in my school and shared about our school UNICEF school challenge. They read… “During next weeks Trick and Trot, the third graders from Miss Hassanzadeh’s class will be collecting money to donate to an organization called UNICEF. UNICEF works to help millions of kids all over the world who don't have clean water to drink, food, or medicine. We will have a table set up at the Trick and Trot to sell popcorn for 50 cents. All proceeds will go to UNICEF. In addition, there will be a raffle going on that night. It will cost 25 cents to purchase a ticket for a chance to have your name drawn for the prize basket. We hope to see you there!”
  • 8. The Night of the Trick and Trot • On the night of the Trick and Trot, some of my students volunteered to help with the fundraiser and so we set up a table in the cafeteria and awaited the crowd. • In the mean time, I walked around the school with my Trick and Treat for UNICEF “box costume” and advertised our table.

  • 23. The Results of the Trick and Trot • After the Trick and Trot, we raised $97.56. The turn out was excellent. Parents and students were eager to help fundraise for a great cause. • The school donated popcorn for the fundraiser and I purchased goodies (notepads, pencils, dry erase markers, candy, bracelets, erasers, pens, a gift card, and 3 restaurant coupons for the prize basket).
  • 24. The Prize Box • On Friday morning, I drew a name from the prize box fundraiser basket and announced the winning students name over the intercom. • Our class/school made $24.50 from selling prize box tickets for 25 cents each.
  • 25. Trick or Treat for UNICEF in the Classroom • Another activity my class participated in was letter writing. My students wrote about the importance of donating for UNICEF and about the meaning of UNICEF. These letters were persuasive and written to inform an audience “written to me” about the great cause. • Their letters were sent home for their parents to read. • Here are a few examples of the students’ letters in the next following slides.

  • 34. THANK YOU! • UNICEF is a big part of my life (personally) and I participate in trick or treat for UNICEF each year by incorporating it into my classroom. I am happy to say this year was the most successful and valuable for my students'. It was a learning experience and turned into a small school community project. • Thank you for your consideration and together, we can MAKE A CHANGE!
