Introduction
IntroduCTION
Little India is located on the outskirt of Kuala
Lumpur. It is a mini town called Brickfields that
represents Indian Culture.
Brickfields is a highly visited place by tourists and also
by local people. The area have everything related to
the Indian lifestyle.
Recently Little India was transformed into a wide
street market with Indian stores and restaurants run
by the country’s Indian community.
Little India is today a major attraction for tourists
visiting Malaysia.

IntrodUCTION
You can immediately notice that you have
arrived at Little India because the decorations at
Brickfields is just one of the kind.
The colors and lightings of the street are simply
amazing. It makes you feel like your actually in
India.
The shops here sell everything from traditional Indian
goods such as saris, bangles, flower garlands, spices
and Bollywood music, to local delicacies such as
vadai, thosai (Indian pancakes made from fermented
rice flour) and more.

HISTORY
History
Brickfields began as the center of brick-
making in the late 19th century, after a
huge fire and flood swept through Kuala
Lumpur in 1881.
The British Resident of Selangor,
required that buildings be constructed of
brick and tile.
Hence, Kapitan Yap Ah Loy bought a
sprawling piece of real estate for the
setting up of a brick industry which
would spur the rebuilding of Kuala
Lumpur.

This place is the eponymous Brickfields. The British authorities brought in people from Sri Lanka to work
the railway and the depot.
Many lived in quarters around Brickfields. Since then the Indian community have lived and remained here
and became citizens of Malaysia.
Today the same people have created this amazing place in brickfield known as Little India
History

FOOD
Indian Culture has a major dependence on spices and food. Little India is very rich in food. It has food from
all corners of India. There you can taste all kinds of spices, sweets and meals. The place is full of restaurants
and stalls which sells all kinds of Indian savories. One of the most famous food available in Little India are
samosa, vadai, banana leaf rice and gulab jamun to name a few. You can also find various types of fruit juices
and the famous lassi.

Indian sweets are a real delish. A wide variety of curry.

Spiciness is the key to Indian cuisine. Some Indian sweets at a mamak.

A large variety of Beans is also available to the public.

Many types of Laddoo of different flavours is freshly cooked at the mamaks in Brickfields.
The favourite dish of the Mughal empire was butter chicken and naan cooked in tandoor.

ARCHITECTURE

Little India is also famous for its Indian architecture. South Indian architecture is very complex with lots of
curves, arches and idols.
The buildings are very traditional and colorful. This brings life to the place. The colors reflect the south
Indian community which lives in little India.
Distinctive design and arches represent the Indian culture in the architecture of the buildings.

JEWELRY
jewelry
Jewelry is an important part of the Indian Culture. The more jewelry one has, it represents its social status.
The dynasties present in India use to heavily wear jewelry. Today, in Little India, there are an abundance of
jewelry shops which vary from the highest quality to the lowest.
Bangles and Earrings are the items which are mostly bought.

CLOTHING
Clothing
There is a large variety of clothing available in shops at little India. Most commonly, saris and Kurtis. Those
are the traditional wear of Indian people. It is an important part of their culture. Dressing up is a major thing
in the Indian culture.
Shops in Little India have a large selection of Indian clothing from daily wear to special wedding attires.

COMMUNITY
Community
Little India has a very diverse community. There are Hindu temples, churches, Chinese temple and mosque
all nearby to each other. This represents the Malaysian society of various religions living in harmony.
The people there speak a variety of languages. The people are very friendly and ever smiling. It is safe to
walk at night as the food places and shops are open till very late.

There is a big community at Brickfields. The place is always lively full with people.

Day TIME
Little India has a very diverse community. There are Hindu temples, churches, Chinese temple and mosque
all nearby to each other.
The people there speak a variety of languages. The people are very friendly and ever smiling. It is safe to
walk at night as the food places and shops are open till very late.

NIGHT LIFE

Little India gets very busy by night time. After work, many people come to eat and do some grocery
shopping.
Often it cause traffic jams. The area is very lighted at night making it easy and safe to walk around.
The lively atmosphere of Brickfield at night. Lights are on everywhere and makes it very attractive.

Little India closes very late. There are a lot of people who come to eat after office hours and
do some shopping. Often the traffic is very bad in the area due to the amount of people. 18
