For the past number of years, a group of
mainly Navy Reserve retired Veterans,
organized under the name of “The Rocky

out activities to help our Military
Veterans. This web site, available for all to
see, has long been needed so that those
organizations that are planning on putting on
a hiring event for our Military members,
whether Active Duty, Guard and Reserve,
Veterans and /or Spouses, can go to one site
and check on other planned events that may
overlap or be too close in time, which could
cause confusion or lack of attendance.

NOMINEES FOR DEPARTMENT OF DEFENSE’S
TOP EMPLOYER AWARD NAMED
Colorado Employers Recognized by National Guard and Reserve Members
Denver-– Employer Support of the Guard and Reserve (ESGR), a Department of
Defense (DoD) office, announces more than 50 Colorado employers of Guard and
Reserve employees have been nominated for the 2015 Secretary of Defense
Employer Support Freedom Award (commonly referred to as the “Freedom
Award”).
The Freedom Award is the highest recognition given by the DoD to employers
for their support of National Guard and Reserve members. On behalf of the
Secretary of Defense, ESGR runs the annual award program, which has presented
the honor to 205 employers since 1996.
Almost half of the U.S. military is made up of National Guard and Reserve
members, many of whom also hold jobs with civilian employers. The Freedom Award recognizes those
employers that provide the most outstanding support for these Citizen Warriors. Up to 15 employers will be
selected for this year’s award and honored at the Pentagon in an official ceremony in August.
Nominations for the Freedom Award must come from a Guard or Reserve member who is employed
by the organization they are nominating, or from a family member. This year’s nominees (complete list
available at http://www.freedomaward.mil/TemplateDetailsView.aspx?TemplateID=6406&ModuleID=7)
represent large and small employers from almost every industry, including health, transportation, hospitality,
entertainment, banking, service and security (just to name a few), as well as from state and local
governments. ESGR received nominations for employers in all 50 states, Guam-CNMI, Puerto Rico, the
U.S. Virgin Islands and the District of Columbia.
Semifinalists and finalists will be announced in sequence throughout the coming months with the
recipients being announced in late June. Updates, press releases and a complete list of the 2,960
nominees can be found at www.freedomaward.mil.

5. Boost Your Military Recruiting
Efforts With 2 Simple
Ingredients: Passion and
Momentum
by *Corissa Keuler Mar 4, 2015, 5:33 am ET
The single-most impactful thing you can do to boost your military hiring efforts
in 2015 is not a new technology or tool, not a pay-per-click service, or
specialized candidate database. This strategy is budget friendly and
team-focused.
The answer: search for and identify one person in your organization that is off-
the-charts passionate about military and veteran-related issues. Then inspire, influence and persuade them to
be your new project lead.
A heartfelt initiative like military and veteran hiring must blend some key components, including inspiring
others into action, sharing best practices, and working as a team across departments. Whether you have a
small crew of recruiters or a large department of specialists, think beyond “recruiting and talent acquisition” to
have a successful veteran program. By naming a project lead who is energetic, empathetic, and already
committed to the cause, you will jump-start the momentum of your program from the time of inception.
The path to award-winning results begins with someone who has heart in the matter, can quickly gain support
of others with their energy, and add a spark of creativity. Find a passionate project lead first and you’ll be
powerfully on your way towards your goal.
Take a moment to reflect on your current team. Who is full of heart? Who is deeply connected to the mission
and values of your organization? Who has volunteered to participate in outreach programs, career fairs, or
diversity events in the past? This may be a tenured employee or possibly a new hire. Keep in mind that you
may need to look beyond the human resources department to find the most passionate advocate. Instead of
targeting a subject matter expert, identify a project lead who is enthusiastic, trusted, and committed to your
mission.
As a next step, organize a strategy session with your project lead, and together brainstorm a roster of all the
employees, internal resources, and departments that you could pull together as a project team. Building a solid
team is top priority, so include employees with a variety of backgrounds and experiences that represent
multiple departments (ideally 5-10 employees total).
Include service men and women who are active duty, guard, reserve, or veteran status, as their experience,
support and input is invaluable. A passionate project lead, partnered with the momentum of a strategic team,
will yield an abundance of energy and ideas that will kick start your military and veteran initiative.

The Frito Lay Company, specifically supervisors, Gregg Bruxvoort and Wanda Jones were

William Cordova, an Army National Guard member .
The nominator, Sarah Harlow, is the spouse of a deployed Air
National Guard service member. This is his fourth
deployment. They have two children, ages 5 and 10. Sarah is
very grateful to her employer, Mike Maguire and his spouse,
Carol, for the support and understanding they provide to her and
her deployed spouse. Sarah serves as the General Manager of
Home Instead Senior Care located in Fort Collins CO. “The
best part about working for Mike and Carol is that they have
a strong sense of commitment to faith and family. In my
search of a new path, this was exactly what I was looking
for. Since my employment in 2012, my work/life balance has
improved greatly. I love that my boss has an understanding
of the importance of family. There was a day a while back
when I called in with a sick child, Neil was on a MAFFS de-
ployment and I was trying to find away to get to work. When
I called Mike, he replied "Sarah, no one is giving awards out
for sending kids to school sick today" He has a genuine understanding of family and is a huge supporter of the
US military. Mike always makes a point to ask about my family and Neil's next adventure and how he and Carol can
support. During this upcoming deployment I know the Maguire family will be there if I need a break from the kids or
just to lend an ear during those difficult times when our family is missing Neil. Mike and Carol’s support during
these next few months is priceless and my family appreciates the ongoing support.”
