Rhonda has been involved with the voluntary and community sector (VCS) most of her life. She has a wealth of knowledge and experience about the VCS and, in 2007, she took on the running of Whitwick Community Coffee Shop. With Rhonda's passion and commitment, the Cafe has developed into a major training initiative covering North West Leciestershire.
Rhonda joined Voluntary Action LeicesterShire's (VAL) 2013 Future Focus Conference to give a workshop on how collaboration can help voluntary and community groups sustain themselves in a difficult economic climate. The workshop looked at ways to streamline services by joining together and developing a shared purpose and vision.
Specifically, Rhonda's workshop helped organsiations find out what a consortium looks like, why a group might consider creating a consortium, how to overcome challenges, and the pluses and minuses of consortium.
While the 2013 Future Focus conference is now over, VAL runs trainings and workshops like Rhonda's year-round. If you'd like to learn more about training for your organisation, visit www.Valoneline.org.uk.

Sitra: Kuluttajien asentet geenitutkimuksia kohtaan (Taloustutkimus 12/2013)Sitra / Hyvinvointi
Joka kolmas suomalainen olisi valmis arvioimaan elämäntapojaan uudelleen, mikäli hän saisi tarkempaa tietoa omista perinnöllisistä riskitekijöistään, selviää Sitran Taloustutkimuksella teettämässä kyselytutkimuksessa. Valtaosa suomalaisista suhtautuu geenitestien yleistymiseen terveydenhuollossa myönteisesti. Tärkeimpänä kehityskohteena kansalaiset pitävät lainsäädännön kehittämistä sellaiseksi, etteivät geenitiedot joudu ulkopuolisten käsiin.
Tutkimuksessa selvitettiin kansalaisten asenteita geenitestejä kohtaan, geenitesteihin liittyviä huolenaiheita ja sitä, kenelle päätös geenitestin tekemisestä kuuluu. Tutkimuksen kohdejoukkona oli valtakunnallisesti edustava otos yli 15-vuotiaista, internetiä käyttävistä suomalaisista. Vastaajamäärä oli 2071 henkilöä.

Free Prior Informed Consent the right of a community to grant or withhold consent to projects which will affect them and places communities as equal partners with companies during negotiations. It enables companies to demonstrate their social aspects and risk are appropriately managed. Three key parties: State, Community, Company
each have important individual roles in implementing FPIC but will achieve greater success through collaboration. Agreements are required at various stages of a project. A paradigm shift in how in planning is required based on securing
and maintaining the right to develop a project early in the project cycle in a transparent, participatory and inclusive manner. Exploration and feasibility work needs to be integrated in this approach, not the other way around. Northland
gained it social licence through early proactive engagement with the Muonio Sameby. But lost it by not keeping its promises including failing to sign an MoU, and diminishing engagement once permits were received. Beowulf are implementing a similar approach, and are unlikely to obtain their social licence, putting at risk their ability to successfully
develop their project.

“The mining network is important as it brings together key
stake-holders to discuss and address challenges in the Finnish
mining industry. Through working together, stakeholders learn
about and begin to understand each others points of view, and
it brings us closer to being able to set rules that everyone can
