Some children with selective mutism are terrified of speaking in social situations outside of home. Florida International University runs intensive weeklong immersion programs where these children are gradually exposed to situations requiring them to speak. The program enrolled 26 children who were split into classrooms based on age. Through exercises and activities, counselors helped the children navigate speaking to others with the goal of translating gains to school settings. While some children made progress in speaking during activities, four children still struggled to speak aloud by the end of the program.
