Coagulation factors are proteins produced primarily in the liver that circulate in an inactive form and undergo activation through a series of steps in the coagulation cascade. This process allows blood to change from a liquid to a gel forming a blood clot. Deficiencies in specific coagulation factors can result in bleeding disorders such as hemophilia A, hemophilia B, and parahemophilia. Coagulation is regulated by both procoagulant and anticoagulant factors as well as platelets and the vessel wall to maintain hemostasis.
