2. Signs and Symptomsof
Acute poisoning
• Symptoms due to tissue hypoxia – Headache , nausea ,
vomiting , dizziness , lethargy , feeling of weakness
• Symptoms develop in severity as concentration of COHb
increases.
• CO particularly affects organs that have high O2
utilization (CVS , CNS)
• Infants may be irritable and fed poorly.
• Cherry red discoloration of skin
• CVS – chest pain , palpitations , increased HR
3. • CNS – NEUROLOGICAL SIGNS – include poor
concentration , confusion , disorientation , syncope ,
seizures
• Respiratory – Shortness of breath
• Ophthalmic examination – Retinal hemorrhages
may be seen.
• Exposure during pregnancy may result in
fetal loss.

Chronicpoisoning
• Persistent headache , lightedness , depression ,
confusion , memory loss
• CVS Patients – Symptoms may worsen due to chronic
hypoxia to heart.
• Permanent neurological damage
• Visual disturbances
• Elevated RBC Count
• Symptoms resolves when removed from resource.
