Specsavers, a major eyewear and healthcare retailer, harnessed the power of a strategic collaboration between Red Hat and Pentaho, bolstered by GrayMatter's expertise, to address their intricate data challenges. They grappled with data collation and analysis, inconsistent metrics due to diverse store systems, and a laborious, manual process reliant on Excel.
The solution was rooted in Pentaho, deployed on a Red Hat Enterprise Linux OS. GrayMatter played a pivotal role, actively partnering with Pentaho. They transformed CSV data into a dynamic data warehouse using Pentaho's ETL tool, Kettle. A user-friendly interface allowed online and PDF users to access a range of dashboards and reports, enhancing analysis and report generation.
Results were impressive: consistent metrics across countries, effortless analyses for users, and a focus on strategic decision-making. Pentaho's cost-effectiveness, enterprise-ready capabilities, and GrayMatter's implementation expertise fortified Specsavers' data-driven journey, ushering in a new era of efficiency and decision-making.

Welcome to this general introduction on DataWarehouse Explorer of CNS. My name is ….Below you can find my email address in case you want to send me questions, comments, or suggestions.Again: welcome.
Business Intelligence is sometimes regarded as less significant than other IT activities such as ERP or security; However; as you can see on Gartner’s ranking of CIO Technology Priorities ; BI is heading the list of IT priorities. Therefore; BI is not a marginal activity but BI dominates IT activity
Business Intelligence is sometimes regarded as Technology related ; rather than Business related; However; as you can see on Gartner’s ranking of CIO Business Priorities ; the majority of subjects are related to BI;Therefore; BI is not a just technology, but BI is fundamental in solving your company’s business issues
Companies today are drowning in data and the challenge is not to collect data; but to select from data;Success of a company depends therefore on their ability to provide solutions to perform selection process. What kind of solution is required then to perform that selection process effectively? The first criterion is that the solution is User Friendly; that users can easily understand the solution without in depth technical training that users can easily adopt the solution in their process; The second criterion is that the solution is Affordable; that companies can actually afford a BI solution by using DWE; that additional costs, such as infrastructure, training, maintenance, are minimal; The third criterion is that the solution is scalable; that it is easy to provide the solution to a large number of users; that no heavy hardware infrastructure is required to scale the solution. We mentioned already previously that one-dimensional static reporting does not meet requirements of the users:They require more than only consuming reports; but also to create or change reports, and to act on these reports. Each user type has their own order of importance as you can see in the images:End users will mostly consume OLAP reports on a daily basis; with an occasional need for analyzing the information; While Managers will mostly act on OLAP reports;Whereas IT & BI Analysts will mostly create OLAP reports, and assist in creating and distributing templates. Important is that each user type requires to Consume reports AND to Create reports AND to Act on reports.
In this section we will explain the application scope of the DWE solution
An additional component of our solution is the DWE Portal; which has the following functions:DWE Portal provides a central repository with on the left the folders and the reports on the right; This repository is very easy to understand; and is the central point for sharing analyses created with DWE.DWE Portal provides a fully thin and central access point for encountering and viewing of Static Reports; And from which DWE reports can be opened dynamically in the DataWarehouse Explorer for analysis.DWE Portal can be used for deploying DWE client (first time use) and for maintaining DWE users up-to-date;With only 15 Mb and a simple mouse click on the report, it provides a very light deployment of a rich client.DWE Portal contains the Report Scheduler, which allows time scheduled distribution of DWE reports; For example: A report is mailed every day at 9:30 AM to the sales team with the sales figures of the previous day.DWE Portal allows you to integrate your existing security models for defining access to the DWE Portal and data in the reports; The existing data security defined in SQL Server on the cubes, will be applied in DWE; For example: my role is defined as EMEA; and I am opening a DWE report with data from EMEA and North America. I will be able to open the DWE report but I will only be able to see the data from EMEA. The existing Windows NT security model will be applied in DWE Portal and you will not have to define a new model; For example: when I am logged under my domain name; I will not have to log in again for accessing DWE Portal.
