Blockchain Scalability is one of the most significant concern for Minimum Viable Blockchain Implementation. It is one of the key aspects determining the relevance and feasibility of Blockchain Technology for a particular use case.This session will cover the fundamental aspects of distributed computing that determine the contours of scalability.

Bitcoin: A Peer-to-Peer Electronic Cash System

Abstract.
A purely peer-to-peer version of electronic cash would allow online
payments to be sent directly from one party to another without going through a
financial institution. Digital signatures provide part of the solution, but the main
benefits are lost if a trusted third party is still required to prevent double-spending.
We propose a solution to the double-spending problem using a peer-to-peer network.
The network timestamps transactions by hashing them into an ongoing chain of
hash-based proof-of-work, forming a record that cannot be changed without redoing
the proof-of-work. The longest chain not only serves as proof of the sequence of
events witnessed, but proof that it came from the largest pool of CPU power. As
long as a majority of CPU power is controlled by nodes that are not cooperating to
attack the network, they'll generate the longest chain and outpace attackers. The
network itself requires minimal structure. Messages are broadcast on a best effort
basis, and nodes can leave and rejoin the network at will, accepting the longest
proof-of-work chain as proof of what happened while they were gone.

Privacy-preserving techniques using zero knowledge proof in public Ethereum
Public Blockchain technology like Ethereum is gaining interest and growing use case among startup and fintechs.
Apart from scalability issues which are going to be solved with new consensus and mining techniques (Ethereum Metropolis and Bitcoin SegWit2x with Lightning network),
privacy on transaction is still an issue which is not yet fully addressed yet. Because of the public nature of a Ethereum, many businesses are reluctant to deploy Smart-contract or Dapps solutions for fear of exposing confidential or sensitive information.
The use of zk SNARKs (zk-SNARK stands for “Zero-Knowledge Succinct Non-Interactive Argument of Knowledge”) would essentially solve this dilemma (next EIP improvement of Ethereum called 'Byzantium' include zk SNARKS).
The idea of zk-SNARKs is that they allow verification of the correctness of computations, without a verifier having to execute those computations, or even learn what was actually executed. Using zk-SNARKs, a verifier can confirm that a computation happened correctly, with ‘zero-knowledge’ of the computation.
We propose during this talk to have a brief presentation on cryptography and theory around zero-knowledge proof algorithm.
Then we will try to showcase the benefits of zk-SNARKS and other privacy-preserving techniques (like zcash) on the public blockchain ecosystem.

The use of zk SNARKs (zk-SNARK stands for “Zero-Knowledge Succinct Non-Interactive Argument of Knowledge”) would essentially solve this dilemma (next EIP improvement of Ethereum called 'Byzantium' include zk SNARKS).
The idea of zk-SNARKs is that they allow verification of the correctness of computations, without a verifier having to execute those computations, or even learn what was actually executed. Using zk-SNARKs, a verifier can confirm that a computation happened correctly, with ‘zero-knowledge’ of the computation.
We propose during this talk to have a brief presentation on cryptography and theory around zero-knowledge proof algorithm.
Then we will try to showcase the benefits of zk-SNARKS and other privacy-preserving techniques (like zcash) on the public blockchain ecosystem.

Managing microservices with Istio Service Mesh
Developing and managing hundreds (or maybe thousands) of microservices at scale is a challenge for both development and operations teams.
We have seen over the last years the appearance of new frameworks dedicated to deliver ‘Cloud Native’ applications by providing a set of (out of box) building blocks. Most of these frameworks integrate microservices concerns at the code level.

The pervasiveness of IoT devices makes the delivery mechanism of security updates a challenge. Current IoT systems rely on centralized or brokered paradigms or clouds with huge computational and storage capacities. The existing centralized IoT setups are therefore expensive, owing to the high costs associated with cloud server infrastructures and maintenance, as well as other factors such as network equipment. Thus, the need for a fully decentralized peer to peer and secure technology to overcome these problems rises into the realm of existence. Blockchain provides a solution that fulfills the requirements of such a platform. Ideally, the update infrastructure should implement the CIA triad properties (Confidentiality, Integrity, and Availability). In this article, we study how a blockchain application can meet these requirements and propose a novel system to decentrally distribute digital content in a peer-to-peer network using the blockchain technology and smart contracts to overcome the concerns mentioned above. Additionally, in order to prevent the issues stemming from the free-riding challenge in P2P networks (peers refrain to generously share their resources to distribute updates), we exploit a Nash equilibrium micropayment mechanism to grant adequate incentive for peers to participate in distributing IoT update files.

Graspan: A Big Data System for Big Code Analysis
We built a disk-based parallel graph system, Graspan, that uses a novel edge-pair centric computation model to compute dynamic transitive closures on very large program graphs.
We implement context-sensitive pointer/alias and dataflow analyses on Graspan. An evaluation of these analyses on large codebases such as Linux shows that their Graspan implementations scale to millions of lines of code and are much simpler than their original implementations.
These analyses were used to augment the existing checkers; these augmented checkers found 132 new NULL pointer bugs and 1308 unnecessary NULL tests in Linux 4.4.0-rc5, PostgreSQL 8.3.9, and Apache httpd 2.2.18.

Measures in SQL (SIGMOD 2024, Santiago, Chile)
SQL has attained widespread adoption, but Business Intelligence tools still use their own higher level languages based upon a multidimensional paradigm. Composable calculations are what is missing from SQL, and we propose a new kind of column, called a measure, that attaches a calculation to a table. Like regular tables, tables with measures are composable and closed when used in queries.
SQL-with-measures has the power, conciseness and reusability of multidimensional languages but retains SQL semantics. Measure invocations can be expanded in place to simple, clear SQL.
To define the evaluation semantics for measures, we introduce context-sensitive expressions (a way to evaluate multidimensional expressions that is consistent with existing SQL semantics), a concept called evaluation context, and several operations for setting and modifying the evaluation context.

We will focus in particular on tuning your engine at the application level, making the right adjustments to ensure that your system responds like a well-oiled, high-performance race car.

The goal is not to write perfect code showcasing validation, but rather, to provide a small, rough-and ready exercise to reinforce your muscle-memory.
Despite its grandiose-sounding title, this deck consists of just three slides showing the Scala 3 code to be rewritten whenever the details of the operators begin to fade away.
The code is my rough and ready translation of a Haskell user-validation program found in a book called Finding Success (and Failure) in Haskell - Fall in love with applicative functors.
