Thesis
Through the research, of a mini ethnography study
and an interview with an intensive care unit nurse,
nurses at San Francisco General Hospital receives
adequate training on how to deal with cultural
differences that may arise.
Comfort in Familiarity
Even though individuals may be able to identify
with a variety of groups they still might be
attracted to the one they identify with most.
Non Verbal Communication
The way in which individuals use nonverbal cues
plays a tremendous part in communication.
Within the nursing setting there might come a
time when language is a barrier.
Cultural Differences
Martin and Nakayama 2010 state, “Although
people may share a single national history, each
cultural group within the nation may have its own
history. Cultural group histories help us
understand the identities of various groups”
(Martin & Nakayama , 2010).
In Conclusion
Nurses are expected to know the processes,
diagnosis and different treatment options for
specific types of illnesses. In addition to learning
a new language they also need to learn about
people.
