The questionarises …The mystery of “The Cloud”...What does itmean to you?
What is “The Cloud” exactly? The Cloud describes a (business) model :Based on the InternetProvided ‘as a service’Which involves dynamically scalable resourcesWhich is flexible in all it’s aspects
Service layersMost common service layers:Software as a Service (SaaS)
Platform as a Service (PaaS)
Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS)Software as a Service: SaaSSoftware as a Service (SaaS)Example: Salesforce.comApplications hosted onlineNo need for software (typically browser based)
Platform as a Service: PaaSPlatform as a Service: PaasExample: Google WebengineFacilitates deployment of applicationsServices available on the internet
Infrastructure as a Service: IaaSInfrastructure as a Service (IaaS)Example: Combell Public Cloud= Cloud computing – Utility computing
Infrastructure as a Service:2dimensions:Managed / Unmanaged Cloud
Deployment models: Private / Public CloudInfrastructure as a Service:Unmanaged Clouds:Examples: Amazon, Azure
Virtual Colocation
Full control using control panelManaged Clouds:Example: Combell Cloud
Everything up until the OS is managed

Editor's Notes

  • #5 BENJAMINOK, so let's talk about Hosting in the cloud … Combell has been offering cloud solutions for some years now, we just never called it that way before. So what is a cloud, to get to a definition of cloud, we first need to grasp the definition of virtualisation … So basically, virtualisation is all about virtualizing resources. The main things that are virtualized are CPU, RAM and Diskspace. If we look at our data centers today for example and take the average of the 1500 servers we host, we see that less then 8% of the CPU capacity is used across our server park. So there's a huge amount of resources, costs, energy and thus money, being lost every day. So what if we could throw all those CPU's into one big pool and share all the capacity out of that pool, so we could get more out of our CPU's ? That's the basic idea of virtualization.
  • #6 BENJAMINSo we started off with the concept of virtualizing all those resources and thus reusing the same server for multiple machines, and with the increasing power of today's Processors and multi-core technologies, we are able to easily run up to 10 servers in 1 physical server.
  • #7 BENJAMINThe next step was that we hooked up 2 physical servers to each other which opened a whole new world of possibilities. We are able to move machines from one physical node in the cloud to another without any downtimeThis allows us to do hardware upgrades, also without downtime … where we first move the virtual machine to another node, replace the hardware or do an upgrade, and put the VM back.
  • #8 BENJAMINIf one machine crashes it would automatically start up on one of the remaining nodes.
  • #9 BENJAMINNow if we create a group, farm our 'cloud' of virtualization servers we talk about a cloud. So a cloud is basically a huge group of resources where you can rent a piece from. Combell has offered cloud solutions since 2005 with Virtuozzo technology and has been integrating Vmware since 2008.

  • #11 BENJAMINFlexibility: not only can we move machines around in the cloud, we can also upgrade there resources on the flyHardware independence: Since the Virtual hardware is identical in all virtuals in the cloud you never have compatibility issues like you had in the old days when you wanted to migrate from a HP machine to a Dell machine High-Availability: no need for expensive clustering software, if a machine crashes it will automatically boot on another node in the cloudIsolation: if one server takes up 100% of CPU power it will not affect the other serversSpeed: Since we can clone virtual machines in a matter of minutes we can deploy new servers just as fastUptime: Because every component of the cloud is built with full redundancy, you maximize your uptime
  • #23 TOMDuring the last months we assisted a lot of customers with designing their virtualization infrastructure. Today I want to present you one practical customer case dedicated to e-commerce applications. The virtualization of FruconFrucon, located in Roeselare, offers outsourcing services for e-commerce. They help companies on a daily basis with strategy development, integration services, customer service and even fulfillment. Frucon runs it own business Gift.be and Giftsofcourse.com. For famous customers like Destrooper, Duvel and Neuhaus they arrange all outsourcing services like order processing and worldwide delivery.
  • #24 TOMIn the past Frucon had single dedicated machines for all e-commerce websites. Because most customers want Frucon also take care of the hosting they looked for a reliable platform. Downtime for e-commerce websites implicates loss of revenue.
