Hidden Costs of Onsite Computers
– Managing backups and
redundancy
– Care and feeding of equipment
– Managing security issues
– Remote Access costs
– Heat generated increases air-
conditioning costs
– Hardware replacement costs
– Energy costs

A better way: Cloud Computing
© Pogstone, Inc | www.shulsuite.com | info@shulsuite.com| 312-970-0613
A better way: Cloud Computing
• Cloud computing definition
– Web based software that is run in a dynamically resizable data center,
that is located elsewhere, and reached via the Internet.
• Renting vs owning
– Rent = software run and hosted by the vendor
– Own = software can be in any data center,
• Web-based software
– Software that is designed and accessed via a browser
– Back-end may be running in the local office, or remote location.
• To quote Sun “The network is the computer”
• All modern software is 100% browser based.
– Out-of-date software requires on-site equipment with expensive
ongoing costs and support issues.
– NO Installation on various PCs, decreasing support costs
• Many out-of-date software programs no longer exist!
– Mapping software , such as Microsoft Street View
– Encyclopedias sold in stores, such as Encarta, Britannica
– “QuickBooks Online” is now available on the web.
– Many PC-based software products are extinct or are endangered
species

Advantages with Cloud Computing
• Eliminate “business features”
on Internet account for the
office
• Eliminate heavy ongoing costs
associated with on-site
equipment.
• Eliminate major responsibility
for equipment, related costs

Interim Solutions on the road to Cloud
• Get an appliance
– “Network Attached Storage“
– approx $170 for 1 Terabyte
( 1,000 Gigabytes)

Cloud leads to Social
- Cloud computing made Social Networks
possible
- Sharing is easy in the cloud
- Younger people and businesses do
everything in the cloud: socializing, work,
hobbies all blur together.

Social Media has gone mobile!
- Synagogues need to participate and
listen…but who has time?
- All these social places should tie in to the
synagogue website and the reverse
- Facebook fan page or group?
- All social platforms are not the same.

Editor's Notes

  • #5 Current trends: technology changes are accelerating. Some say like dog years: 7 years of change are condensed into 1 year. Mobile computing, social computing, Internet apps that are as sophisticated as desktop software.
  • #6 How to support people working from home or the road? Access by volunteers? Does remote access create security holes? Who is proactively keeping up on all needed patches and applying them?
  • #8 Key to cloud: browser based, resizable resources on the fly, remote data center
  • #10 NAS – About the size of a paperback book, plugs directly into the network. Google Apps is ideal. NAS may be required for out-dated software that expects drive letters, or sharing large video files.
