facilitating social change and activism.
More often than not this takes the form of
supporting and promoting a cause on
social media, but it can include a whole
range of activities…"[1]

We cannot expect
likes, sharing, and
hashtags to create
change. We need
to pair action with
this online
promotion to make
a difference, and
this can start from
our phones.
70% of Americans use digital media to
learn global issues, but only 25%
actually make changes. [2]
9 in 10 North
Americans
have a mobile
phone.[3]
Why not begin to take
action on social issues
with our phones?

Viral campaigns and social media
can empower society, but it must be
recognized that these methods are a
call to action.
#BringBackOurGirls
shows that simply
tweeting a
hashtag is not
enough because
they have such a
short life span.
#BringBackOurGirls was used
to educate people about the
abduction of Nigerian
schoolgirls by Boko Haram, a
Nigerian radical Islamic
militia.[2]
It dominated the
news for a few
months, but was
soon replaced
by new viral
causes. [2]

With an evident
increase in
technology use,
organizations are
realizing that
technology to
create change is a
great strategy! [5]

apps.[6]
The UNICEF Tap Project used the
technology trend of apps and
games to make a difference.
The Tap Project mobile
app tracks how much
time a person takes a
break from their
smartphone, and in
return, sponsors
contribute money to
safe water for
children.[7]
15 minutes of digital
detox = 1 day supply
of clean water for a
child [7]
In 2014, there were 2.6 million
participants worldwide, and
over $1 million raised. [8]
Another method is to pair
the viral nature of videos
with donations.
ALS Ice Bucket Challenge combined a
trending hashtag with a video challenge
to raise awareness and funding, and it
was the "single largest episode of giving
outside of a disaster or emergency"[9].
2.5 million people
donated $115
million to the ALS
Association
during the
challenge[9].
Funds were used for
research that has led to
the discovery of new
genes linked to ALS[10].
As demonstrated by the
UNICEF Tap Project and ALS
Ice Bucket Challenge, we can
definitely use technology to
make change!

  • 8. #BringBackOurGirls shows that simply tweeting a hashtag is not enough because they have such a short life span.
  • 9. #BringBackOurGirls was used to educate people about the abduction of Nigerian schoolgirls by Boko Haram, a Nigerian radical Islamic militia.[2]
  • 10. It dominated the news for a few months, but was soon replaced by new viral causes. [2]
  • 11. 57 213 Escaped Unknown Action past tweeting a hashtag is required to ensure the girls were not forgotten. Only 57 girls had escaped after 1 year.
  • 12. With an evident increase in technology use, organizations are realizing that technology to create change is a great strategy! [5]
  • 13. 90% of time on our mobiles is spent on apps.[6]
  • 14. The UNICEF Tap Project used the technology trend of apps and games to make a difference.
  • 15. The Tap Project mobile app tracks how much time a person takes a break from their smartphone, and in return, sponsors contribute money to safe water for children.[7]
  • 16. 15 minutes of digital detox = 1 day supply of clean water for a child [7]
  • 17. In 2014, there were 2.6 million participants worldwide, and over $1 million raised. [8]
  • 18. Another method is to pair the viral nature of videos with donations.
  • 19. ALS Ice Bucket Challenge combined a trending hashtag with a video challenge to raise awareness and funding, and it was the "single largest episode of giving outside of a disaster or emergency"[9].
  • 20. 2.5 million people donated $115 million to the ALS Association during the challenge[9].
  • 21. Funds were used for research that has led to the discovery of new genes linked to ALS[10].
  • 22. As demonstrated by the UNICEF Tap Project and ALS Ice Bucket Challenge, we can definitely use technology to make change!
