The Rockefeller Foundation’s Oceans & Fisheries work aims to increase the health and productivity of coastal fisheries by replacing unsustainable fishing practices with innovative approaches that recognize the full, long-term value of sustainable marine ecosystems and that improve the economic, nutritional, and social conditions of the poor and vulnerable people whose well-being depends on these near-shore fisheries.
The document discusses Earth Hour, an event organized by the World Wildlife Fund (WWF) to raise awareness about climate change. It notes that WWF works with experts around the world on issues like carbon emissions reductions and forest protection. It also provides details about the Southeast Rivers and Streams region in the United States, which contains high biodiversity but many threatened species of fish, mussels, and other aquatic life. Biodiversity in the region is declining due to environmental impacts.
The degradation of natural infrastructure like mangroves, wetlands, and coral reefs in urban coastal areas is a significant and growing problem that disproportionately impacts poor populations. Coastal ecosystems provide important benefits like food, income, and protection from hazards, but around half of these ecosystems have been lost globally since 1900 due to development and land use changes. This is especially pressing in Asia and Africa where populations are rapidly growing in coastal cities and rely heavily on natural resources. Continued degradation of remaining coastal ecosystems from climate change and development could lead to irreversible losses of natural infrastructure protection for tens of millions of vulnerable urban coastal dwellers worldwide.

World Environment Day is an annual event that is aimed at being the biggest and most widely celebrated global day for positive environmental action. World Environment Day activities take place all year round and climax on 5 June every year, involving everyone from everywhere.
The World Environment Day celebration began in 1972 and has grown to become one of the main vehicles through which the United Nations stimulates worldwide awareness of the environment and encourages political attention and action.
Through World Environment Day, the United Nations Environment Programme is able to personalize environmental issues and enable everyone to realize not only their responsibility, but also their power to become agents for change in support of sustainable and equitable development.
World Environment Day is also a day for people from all walks of life to come together to ensure a cleaner, greener and brighter outlook for themselves and future generations.
Everyone counts in this initiative and World Environment Day relies on you to make it happen! We call for action — organize a neighborhood clean-up, stop using plastic bags and get your community to do the same, stop food waste, walk to work, start a recycling drive . . . the possibilities are endless.
Forests cover one-third of the Earth, provide three-fourths of freshwater, and are home to over half of the world's plant and animal species. Approximately 1.6 billion people rely on forests for their livelihoods. However, 13 million hectares of forest are destroyed annually, reducing biodiversity and exacerbating climate change. Forests play a vital role in regulating climate, supporting livelihoods, and maintaining ecological balance, yet they face serious threats from deforestation, urbanization, and unsustainable agricultural practices.

The World Wildlife Fund (WWF) was founded in 1961 in Switzerland by prominent environmentalists who realized more funding was needed to protect the environment. WWF's goals are to preserve biodiversity and species, restore endangered populations, and achieve a balance between human and natural resource use. Notable successes include increasing giant panda and sea turtle populations through protected areas. Actor Leonardo DiCaprio partners with WWF to support campaigns like Save the Tigers Now, which doubled Nepal's wild tiger population. WWF's iconic panda logo was inspired by one in the London Zoo in 1961.

Rapid degradation of peri-urban ecosystems is resulting in a loss of associated ecosystem services. Water provision, storm-and waste-water regulation, along with protection from natural disasters and erosion, are the impacted services that most acutely affect poor or vulnerable populations. The poor may be disproportionately impacted by loss of ecosystem services due to lack of political power around land use decision making and limited alternatives for livelihoods, housing, or basic services. Vulnerability extends to urban populations that depend on the ecosystem services provided by or flowing through peri-urban areas. Often, the loss of ecosystems is irreversible and the replacement of associated services is costly, if even possible.
State of the States Report: A new perspective on the wealth of our nationKatelin Breck
The report, “State of the States: A New Perspective on the Wealth of Our Nation,” details the Ecological Footprint and resource availability of 50 states and the District of Columbia. Created in collaboration with Earth Economics in Tacoma, Washington, the report finds that resource consumption and availability varies dramatically state by state.
This document discusses the importance of biodiversity conservation. It begins by defining biodiversity and noting its origins throughout geological history. Examples are given of how loss of biodiversity, such as through China's "Four Pests" campaign which targeted sparrows, can have disastrous consequences like widespread famine. Today, biodiversity loss increases the risk of zoonotic diseases transferring to humans. India is highlighted as one of the most biodiverse countries, yet also facing threats to many species. The document stresses that conservation efforts are needed to protect biodiversity for continued ecosystem services and human well-being.
Ecotourism is a part of environmental conservation, and understanding what the needs of the people are who are local to the area so that you can help to improve their quality of life. It also involves learning more about the history of other cities and preserving the historical landmarks.
Here in my research I need to identify the scope and development of ecotourism. And the management of ecotourism in both government and non-government organizations.
Research Objectives are thought to be as follows:-
1. To determine the volume of tourism in ecological areas and other areas in Bangladesh.
2. Find out the opportunities for developing ecotourism.
3. Identify the pros and cons of ecotourism on the local communities of Bangladesh.
Bangladesh is a gift of nature. This country is an attractive ecotourism destination in south Asia (Bhuiyanet al.2010). Its natural resources, ecological advantages and situated in an important geographical nerve point are great pleasure for developing ecotourism here. Bangladesh has a host of tourist treasurers to offer to tourists- beaches, lakes, rivers, hills, forests, wildlife, tribal life, archaeological remains, including historical monuments, folklore, religious and cultural heritage, handicrafts and much more. All these combinations are enormous ecotourism products. The country, having tourism potential, must be conscious in developing market. The country has its potential to differentiate its product for its uniqueness. Therefore, ecotourism industry of Bangladesh must arrange its different elements such a way that give its better satisfaction to the visitors of the world.

This September, students from Greene’s Lisbon and Oxford, began a 6-month international campaign, communicating the hard facts surrounding the plight of the White Rhino, while focusing on conservation in general. Collaborating with the Lisbon Zoo, WWF, Rhino Pride Foundation, Save the RHINO, Lisbon Oceanarium and other inspiring professionals and institutions, Greene’s students aim to stir up a new awareness and action as a resilient response to human impact.
Aspiring not only to deliver results, but also becoming frontrunners - innovative, interdisciplinary, able to communicate effectively the message of conservation - the students hope to create a global momentum that will inspire above and beyond the campaign.

The document discusses ecosystem services and their importance in river basin management. It defines ecosystem services as the benefits that people obtain from ecosystems, including provisioning services like food and freshwater, regulating services like climate regulation and flood regulation, and cultural services like aesthetic, spiritual, and recreational benefits. The document advocates for mainstreaming ecosystem services, which means integrating conservation and sustainable use of biodiversity into various production sectors. This requires understanding how a healthy environment supports economic sectors and implementing coordination mechanisms. The ecosystem approach aims to balance conservation, sustainable use, and equitable benefit-sharing, according to principles like decentralized management and long-term planning. Tools are presented for assessing drivers of biodiversity loss and recording the status of ecosystem services.
This document provides an overview of climate change vulnerabilities and potential adaptation strategies for 20 species of African megafauna. It discusses how these species are economically and culturally important for tourism, conservation, sport hunting, and game ranching. While extensively studied, little research has examined how these species may be impacted by climate change. The document conducts an initial vulnerability assessment based on each species' exposure, sensitivity, and adaptive capacity. Key vulnerabilities include dependence on surface water, heat stress, and lack of habitat connectivity. Suggested adaptation strategies include provision of water/shade, improving habitat connectivity, captive breeding, translocation, and reintroduction.

The document also references Maatru Puja which involves the worship of mothers and young girls.
This document lists the locations of various sculptures around the world. It includes brief 1-2 sentence descriptions of some sculptures and their locations, such as a magic tap sculpture in Cadiz, Spain, a bronze statue in Bratislava, Slovakia that is rubbed for good luck, and a shark sculpture in Oxford, England that landed on a roof in 1986. Many locations are listed without descriptions, including cities in Europe, Asia, North and South America, and Africa.
This document provides a brief overview of the history of painting from ancient cave paintings in Spain through various periods including Egyptian, Chinese, Roman, Medieval, Renaissance, Baroque, Rococo, Neo-Classicism, Romanticism, Impressionism, Pointalism, Ukiyo-e, Post-Impressionism and Fauvism. Key artists mentioned include Leonardo da Vinci, Michelangelo, Van Eyck, Caravaggio, Vermeer, Boucher, David, Delacroix, Turner, Monet, Manet, Seurat, Matisse, and Derain.
The document summarizes important cave paintings from three archaeological sites in Europe:
1) Altamira Cave in Spain contains bison paintings dated to 16,000-9,000 BC, making them some of the oldest known cave paintings.
2) Lascaux Cave in France features paintings of horses, bulls and stags from around 15,000 BC.
3) Chauvet-Pont-d'Arc Cave in France contains animal paintings that may be as old as 32,000 years.
Theories suggest the paintings were used for decoration, magic, or to document hunts, and they were created using tools like bones and natural pigments like ochre.
The document summarizes prehistoric cave art found in the Lascaux and Chauvet caves in France and other sites around the world. It discusses when the caves were discovered, how the paintings were created between 17,000-30,000 years ago using materials like pigments and torches, and what subjects were commonly depicted, including animals but few humans. The significance of the art is that it reflects the lifeways of prehistoric peoples during the Ice Age.
The cave of Lascaux in France contains hundreds of prehistoric pictographs and petroglyphs discovered in 1940. The paintings within the cave mostly depict horses as well as other animals that lived in the area at that time such as stags, bulls, bison, and ibex. There is only one human painted. Archaeologists have proposed various hypotheses for the purpose of the paintings, including using them for hunting instructions or rituals, or creating them for good luck in hunting.
The document summarizes a technical seminar presentation about a green engine. It describes the green engine as a pistonless, six-phase engine that has high efficiency of up to 65% and nearly zero exhaust emissions. It works differently than a conventional engine by having six phases instead of strokes and lacks pistons. The green engine offers benefits over conventional engines like lower weight and size, ability to use multiple fuels, reduced emissions and noise, and higher efficiency. Its applications include use in automobiles, generators, and other machinery.
This document discusses what art is and explores its various functions and components. It examines how art can be a visual expression of ideas or experiences that serves personal, social, physical, spiritual, and educational purposes. The document also looks at different artworks, artists, and the steps to critique a work of art, such as describing, analyzing, interpreting, and judging it.
Prehistoric art (The Stone Age Paleo/Meso/Neolithic period)Ana Barany
The document discusses prehistoric art from the Stone Age, including the Paleolithic, Mesolithic, and Neolithic periods. During the Paleolithic period, the first pictorial manifestations appeared as humans settled near rivers and lakes. Cave paintings from this time have been found in France and Spain, using natural pigments and stone tools. In the Mesolithic period, art became more geometric and used a restricted range of colors, while the Neolithic period saw the emergence of agriculture and more permanent settlements, along with weaving, megalithic architecture, and early forms of pottery and statuary.
This presentation is designed to question what is termed art, what art should look like and what is the role of art. This is aimed at transition yr pupils(aged 15 yrs) and is not dependant on any background in art.
The document provides an introduction to visual art, defining it as the use of skill and imagination to create aesthetic objects or experiences that can be shared. It examines how art is perceived and classified, exploring elements like style, composition, and seeing. Key terms related to art are defined, and the purposes and importance of art are discussed, including how it can create beauty, enhance environments, influence society, and express beliefs, fantasy, protest, and more. Art is analyzed using components, elements, principles of design, and underlying concepts.
Congratulations Graduate! Eleven Reasons Why I Will Never Hire You.Mark O'Toole
Over the past 20 years, I’ve been in hiring roles and have received thousands of resumes from new college graduates. I’ve interviewed many for real jobs and done my share of informational interviews. Sometimes I’ve hired people into entry-level positions. More often though, I haven’t.
Those who did not get the job were sometimes just not the right fit. Other times, they were trumped by a more impressive candidate or victim to some other random event mostly out of their control.
Too many had the background to make the cut or at least garner a second interview. But disastrous interviewing skills brought you down.
Here are my top reasons why I will never hire you.
WTF - Why the Future Is Up to Us - pptx versionTim O'Reilly
This is the talk I gave January 12, 2017 at the G20/OECD Conference on the Digital Future in Berlin. I talk about fitness landscapes as applied to technology and business, the role of unchecked financialization in the state of our politics and economy, and why technology really wants to create jobs, not destroy them. (There is a separate PDF version, but some readers said the notes were too fuzzy to read.)
Study: The Future of VR, AR and Self-Driving CarsLinkedIn
We asked LinkedIn members worldwide about their levels of interest in the latest wave of technology: whether they’re using wearables, and whether they intend to buy self-driving cars and VR headsets as they become available. We asked them too about their attitudes to technology and to the growing role of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in the devices that they use. The answers were fascinating – and in many cases, surprising.
This SlideShare explores the full results of this study, including detailed market-by-market breakdowns of intention levels for each technology – and how attitudes change with age, location and seniority level. If you’re marketing a tech brand – or planning to use VR and wearables to reach a professional audience – then these are insights you won’t want to miss.

Invasive alien species are non-native plants, animals, and pathogens that harm ecosystems and biodiversity. Globalization has increased their spread by facilitating international trade and travel. Invasive species outcompete native species and disrupt ecosystems, and have contributed to nearly 40% of known animal extinctions. Examples include zebra mussels in North America, water hyacinth worldwide, and ship rats that have caused extinctions on islands. The Convention on Biological Diversity recognizes invasive species as a threat and calls on parties to prevent introductions and mitigate impacts. Prevention is the most effective approach, while management requires collaboration across many organizations and public awareness.
The document summarizes the work of WWF and TRAFFIC to combat illegal wildlife trade through a global campaign between 2012-2013. The campaign aimed to secure commitments from heads of state to treat wildlife crime as a serious crime. It used advocacy, media outreach, and partnerships to raise awareness of the issue. Key successes included declarations and policies from governments to strengthen enforcement of wildlife laws and reduce demand for illegal products. The timeline shows many actions taken over the course of the campaign by governments, leaders, and organizations to increase penalties for wildlife crime and regulate domestic markets.
This document discusses the roles of non-governmental organizations (NGOs) and voluntary agencies in preserving the environment. It provides examples of several major international NGOs working on environmental issues, such as the International Union for Conservation of Nature, The Nature Conservancy, World Wide Fund for Nature, Environmental Defense Fund, Greenpeace, Earthwatch Institute, Fauna and Flora International, World Resources Institute, and Forest Stewardship Council. These organizations work to protect biodiversity, combat climate change, promote sustainable practices, advocate for environmental policies, and educate the public on environmental issues through research, conservation projects, advocacy, and partnerships with other groups.

This document provides a summary of a report by Dalberg Global Development Advisors and WWF on natural World Heritage sites as drivers of sustainable development. The report acknowledges contributions from individuals and organizations involved in case studies. It contains a foreword arguing that protecting the environment does not hinder development. The report finds that almost half of natural World Heritage sites are threatened by harmful industrial activities. More than 11 million people depend on these sites for livelihoods and well-being. The report calls for protecting these sites to promote sustainable development and alleviate poverty.
The document discusses Friends of the Earth, the world's largest grassroots environmental network. It operates in 77 countries and campaigns on urgent environmental and social issues. It is structured as a confederation with autonomous national groups composed of local grassroots organizations. Friends of the Earth conducts coordinated international campaigns while allowing independent national campaigns that do not contradict their policies.
The document summarizes information about wildlife crime in Uganda presented by the Wildlife Conservation Society. It defines wildlife crime and discusses the common types occurring in Uganda. The main drivers are identified as traditional practices, subsistence needs, and commercial trade, both within and outside the country. The impacts on elephant and lion populations are shown through census data. Actions to combat wildlife crime discussed include effective ranger patrols, intelligence gathering, working with the judiciary, and addressing the root drivers by engaging local communities and establishing alternative livelihoods. A multifaceted approach is needed to curb wildlife crime in Uganda.
The World Wildlife Fund (WWF) is an international conservation organization whose mission is to conserve nature and ensure human needs are met in harmony with the environment. By 2020, WWF aims to conserve 19 of the world's most important natural places and influence global markets to protect nature. WWF works in over 100 countries on projects like ecosystem services, sustainable resource use, and pollution reduction. In response to the 2010 Gulf of Mexico oil spill, WWF is monitoring the situation, offering assistance to local partners, and encouraging donations to support cleanup and wildlife rehabilitation efforts.
The document proposes declaring 2018 the "Year of Clean and Healthy Planet" to raise global awareness of the growing waste crisis overwhelming the world. It notes that over 4 billion tons of waste are generated annually, with less than 20% recycled. Developing nations struggle to provide waste management for rapidly growing populations. Uncontrolled waste is damaging public health, economies, and the environment. A concerted global effort is needed to achieve sustainable development goals and give all people a cleaner planet to live on. It asks the UN Secretary General to consider the proposal to mark 2018 as a year focusing on the fight against pollution from uncontrolled waste.
This document discusses approaches to securing the livelihoods and nutritional needs of fish-dependent communities given threats from overfishing, climate change, and habitat destruction. It finds that poor and vulnerable populations are most at risk, including one-third of fishers living below the poverty line. Current approaches discussed include alternative livelihoods programs, wealth-based approaches, aquaculture, and shared fisheries governance. Emerging trends observed include experimentation with market-based approaches, interest from new sources of capital, and adoption of a more holistic view integrating conservation, poverty, and food security. The document concludes there are opportunities to better integrate conservation with rights and support successful management regimes, women, innovative financing, and aquaculture
Fisheries, food security and our commitments on oceans and seasFAO

The document outlines FAO's strategic goals of eradicating hunger and malnutrition, eliminating rural poverty, and sustainably managing natural resources. It discusses challenges for fisheries and aquaculture related to resource management, habitat destruction, and socioeconomic issues. The concept of "Blue Growth" is introduced to contribute to food security and poverty alleviation through sustainable use of aquatic resources.
ENV GLOBAL FORUM OCT 2016 - Session 2 - K. Habtegaber OECD Environment
Natural capital is the bedrock of African economies, with agriculture, tourism, fisheries, and forests contributing significantly to GDP and employment. However, rapid population growth, urbanization, and resource extraction are degrading natural capital through issues like land degradation, deforestation, pollution, and overexploitation of resources. This undermines long-term economic development potential. African governments are now recognizing the need to account for natural capital in economic planning and decision making to promote more sustainable development.
The Vitamin Sea project aims to promote awareness of marine life and biodiversity in Cox's Bazar, Bangladesh. The project has three goals: 1) recruit 500 volunteers and engage 1000 fishermen families over one year, 2) promote three social startups related to sustainable ocean economies, and 3) establish a data-driven web portal to monitor marine life and environments. Progress will be measured by volunteer reporting, mentoring startups, and publishing biodiversity reports. Funding would support field operations, research/development, and events.
The World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF) is an international non-governmental organization founded in 1961 that works on environmental issues like conservation, research, and restoration. WWF's mission is to halt and reverse destruction of the environment by conserving biodiversity, ensuring renewable resources are sustainably used, and reducing pollution. It focuses on forests, freshwater, and oceans, and aims to build a future where humans live in harmony with nature. WWF has over 5 million supporters and operates in over 100 countries.

4. World Environment Day 2016
• Illegal trade in wildlife is worth $15-20 billion annually, and is one of the largest illegal
trades in the world, along with trafficking of drugs, arms and humans.
• Illegal, unreported and unregulated (IUU) fishing is estimated at 11-26 million tonnes of
fish each year, worth between $10 and $23 billion, causing depletion of fish stocks, price
increase and loss of livelihoods for fishermen.
• %40 of all intrastate conflicts in the last 60 years were linked to natural resources and
over %80 of major armed conflicts in the last 50 years occurred in biodiversity hotspots.
• Zero tolerance approach to wildlife crime and related illicit activities, including corruption,
money laundering, organized crime, illicit firearms, drugs and terrorism would create a
powerful deterrent.
5. World Environment Day 2016
• Preventing trafficking by strengthening cooperation between source,
destination and transit countries will disrupt the illegal trade and raise
the costs of illicit activities.
• Reducing human-wildlife conflict and engaging communities in
conservation would increase the social support for wildlife protection
and reduce incentives for poaching.
