Cleantech is in its early days An analogy with IT 1st PC appeared in 1975 (Altair) 100,000 computers sold in 1978 290 MILLION sold in 2008 Growth of 3000 times, or 300,000 %, in 30 years Today, computers are everywhere

Even today, they account for around one-third of our sales. In the area of sustainable mobility, these include technologies that help further reduce the fuel consumption and CO2 emissions of vehicles. Energy efficiency and climate protection are also shaping the Industrial Technology and the Consumer Goods and Building Technology business sectors. Energy efficiency - Products range from energy-saving cooling appliances and modern heating systems to machine tools. The EU estimates that primary energy consumption in residential buildings alone can be cut by 27 percent by 2020== That’s why Bosch is striving to achieve a form of sustainable mobility which is low in pollutants and independent of fossil fuels. Working in tandem with our customers, we are researching the potential for powering vehicles by combining an internal-combustion engine with an electric motor or by using an electric motor on its own. However, to bridge the gap to these future-focused solutions and to offer consumers the best available technology today, we at the same time have to further increase the efficiency of the internal-combustion engine. As we plan for the long term but also want to offer improved solutions in the short term, we are pursuing a number of development paths in parallel: * Our engineers are unlocking the energy-saving potential of the internal-combustion engine – potential that is still far from exhausted. * With smart technology along the full length of the drivetrain and with hybrid solutions, we shall help the car and the internal-combustion engine become increasingly clean and efficient. * We are adapting the internal-combustion engine to work with alternative fuels produced either synthetically or from renewable raw materials. * After several development stages involving transitional technologies, we can see growing opportunities in niche segments for electric drives that use a fuel cell as an energy converter to replace the internal combustion engine. * Vehicle safety is just as important as economical and environmentally friendly mobility. In this area, Bosch is developing new functions by networking existing safety systems and sensor technology.==Recycling programConserving resources through remanufacturingMore and more workshops are opting for remanufactured Bosch products to enable repairs at a cost commensurate with a vehicle's current value. This remanufacturing process is now applied to around 9,000 vehicle parts from 27 product groups. Bosch is a leading supplier of industrially remanufactured products such as starters, alternators, air-conditioning compressors, brake calipers, ignition distributors, diesel injection pumps, and many other components. This process of remanufacturing vehicle parts is not just a cheaper alternative for end customers – it also protects the environment by reusing much of the original product. Consequently, this system cuts down on the use of raw materials and produces fewer CO2 emissions than would be generated by the production of new parts. In 2009, Bosch remanufactured 2.5 million parts and in doing so emitted 23,000 fewer metric tons of CO2 than if the parts had been manufactured from scratch.When repairing a vehicle, the workshop can replace a faulty part with either a new or a remanufactured part. For end customers, the remanufactured part is between 30 and 40 percent cheaper than a new one. Bosch places the same high quality standards on remanufacturing as it does on the production of new products, which is why the company gives the same two-year guarantee on remanufactured parts. Today, the possibility of later remanufacturing is taken into account during the development of original components.Demand for high-quality remanufactured parts for car repairs has risen dramatically worldwide in recent years. In the U.S., the replacement business has already conquered almost a 90 percent share of the market. In Europe, too, the market segment is growing steadily, exhibiting far higher growth rates than the largely stagnating aftermarket as a whole. Bosch expects the remanufacturing market in Europe to grow to 30 million products per year by 2015. Bosch's remanufacturing program is supporting the trend towards resource conservation on the car repair market.
