CLASSROOM MANAGEMENT
Learning Styles
Three major learning styles:
1. Visual Learning Looker
2. Auditory Learning Listener
3. Kinesthetic Learning Mover
L O O K E R
General Characteristics:
 Rely on sense of sight when absorbing
information.
 Have excellent eye-hand coordination.
L I S T E N E R
General Characteristics:
 Prefer sounds and words over
information taken by either sight or
touch.
 Tend to be early talkers and posses very
elaborate vocabularies
M O V E R
General Characteristics:
Prefer hand-on learning through both
touch and movements.
Excel in sports and outdoor activities.
ACTIVITIES FOR LOOKER
(younger learners)
Looking at pictures.
Reading text.
Taking notes while listening
Drawing diagrams and
pictures
Activities for Lookers
(Older leaners)
 Computers
 Graphics
 Visual puzzles
 Puzzles
 Charts
 Diagrams
 Cartoons
 Posters
 Bulletin Boards
 colors
Activities for Listeners
(Younger leaners)
Singing songs
Repeating words and
sentences orally.
Drama
Story time
The activities should provide a leaner with the opportunities
to listen and learn, and display verbal talents.
Activities for Listeners
(Older learners)
Talking
Interviewing
Debating
Questioning
Creating and reports
Activities for movers
(older + younger)
 Doodling
 Sketching
 Participating in games
 Dancing, tumbling, running
 Performing experiments
 writing
A perfect activity for them is one that has few rules to get in the way
of the action, involves touch or motion, encourage the use of muscles,
or enable them to spend time outdoors
Classroom For Young Children
Classroom to be bright and
colorful with the windows the
children can see out of, and with
enough room for different
activities to be taking place
Working in groups in different
parts of the classroom, changing
their activities every ten minutes
or so
Discipline and Consequences
 Discipline should be used to correct bad or
disruptive behavior.
 When disciplining a student, do not embarrass the
student in front of their peers.
 The discipline should match the offense (rule
broken). Little offense-little consequence. Major
offense – major consequence.
 Always have small, manageable consequences for
small infractions.
 Have consequences that “you” can enforce.
 ALWAYS follow through with what you say.
 Remember that if you choose to send the student
out of your class for bad behavior, they are not
learning. A student who is not in your class is not
learning.
Other Methods to Try
 Finger Touch
 Desk Stop
 The “Teacher Look”
 The Eye-Level Method
 Bird Of Prey Method
Finger Touch
If a student is not paying attention, walk by their
desk and touch their desk so the student notices.
Do not say a word to the student. You should
continue teaching. The teacher did not call
attention to the student or have to stop class. The
student does know that you are watching them.
BACK
Desk Stop
If a student is becoming disruptive, go and
stand by their desk. Stand right in front of
their desk and teach from there for a few
minutes. Make sure to make eye contact
with that student while you are standing in
front of their desk.
BACK
The “Teacher Look”
(All of us have had this look from a teacher when we
were in school). When the teacher stops and tilts
their head down, squints their eyes, and stares at
you. This tells the students that the teacher has seen
their bad behavior and that they’d better stop it now!
BACK
The Eye-Level Method
This is when the teacher squats down
next to the student so that they are eye-
level and quietly explains that you need
them to be quiet so others can learn and
you can teach.
BACK
Bird of Prey Method
This is when the teacher stands by the
student and learns over the student and
the student must look straight up at the
teacher. Then the teacher and the
student have a personal conversation
about the student’s behavior.
BACK
Positive Methods of Discipline
1. Catch someone being good
2. Call home
3. Free Time
1. Catch someone being good
See the student being good and
tell them what you see in front
of the class. (Henry, today you
worked very hard and did an
excellent job. I’m so proud of
you).
BACK
2. Call Home
 Choose 3 or 4 students and call their parents. Tell their parents what a great
job their children did in class.
 This phone call is good for 11 reasons:
 Parents want and like to hear good things about their children.
 The children will receive praise at home from their parents.
 The parents will see the teacher as someone who likes their children
enough to call and talk to them.
 It starts a good relationship between you and the parents.
 The students know:
 You have their number
 You are not afraid to talk to their parents.
 Their parents like you.
 They will know you will call home when they have been misbehaving in
class ( the teacher needs to make phone calls then too).
 Call home more then once just to say “hello” and make a nice comment.
(The students will also tell their friends that you called their parents.)
BACK
3.Free Time
 When a student has worked hard or the whole class
has worked hard, give them a couple minutes of
free time. Free time is when the students have a
choice on what they want to do.
 Some options for students to do during Free Time
are:
 Read a book of their choice.
 Speak quietly with a friend.
 Play a game.
BACK
Classroom Attention Getters
 This is used to get the student’s attention
and can be used at any point during a
class.
Hand Raise – Teacher raise his/her hand
above their head and does not say a word.
Teacher wait in the front of the room and
does not start class until all students quiet.
Singing – Train students so they know that
by the time you are done singing the song,
they need to be quiet and ready to listen.
Counting Backwards (5,4,3,2,1) – Train
students so they know when you get to1, they
need to be quiet and ready to listen.
That’s it
