SPORT HIGHLIGHTS IN 1993
Football
The Calgary Stampeders finished in first place in the West Division with a 15–3 record.
They attempted to defend their Grey Cup championship, but lost to Edmonton in the
Western Final. The Edmonton Eskimos won the Grey Cup beating the Winnipeg Blue
Bombers 33 - 23.
Baseball
This was the last time a Canadian team won the World Series in this student’s lifetime.
The Toronto Blue Jays won back-to-back World Series, the first on Canadian soil, as
Joe Carter hit the series-winning home run. The Blue Jays beat the Philadelphia Phillies
in game six, winning the series four games to two.
Track and Field
Sprinter Ben Johnson, whose 1988 Olympic Gold medal was rescinded after it was
discovered he used performance enhancing drugs, is permanently banned from
international competition after again testing positive for banned substances.
Hockey
Gary Bettman became commissioner of the National Hockey League, so many lock outs
ago. The Montreal Canadiens defeated the Los Angeles Kings to win the Stanley Cup.
Wayne Gretzky played for the LA Kings but they lost the series four games to one.
Figure Skating
Kurt Browning won the Men’s World figure skating championship for the 92/93 season
and Ice Pairs Figure Skaters Isabelle Brasseur and Lloyd Eisler won the pairs skating
championship.
Financials
 Mortgage rates were between 4-8%.
 The unemployment rate in Canada reached its peak in 1993 at 11%.

 More than1/3 of students will not buy all required textbooks.
 25% of youth age 25-29 still live with their parents compared to
11% in 1981.
 40% of students will likely work while attending SAIT.
