The City of Niš is located in southeastern Serbia and is the third largest city in the country with over 257,000 inhabitants. The city administration oversees energy issues and works with key stakeholders in the energy sector including the district heating company, electricity and gas distributors, and industry. Current energy use data from 2009 shows high consumption in public buildings and a need for infrastructure upgrades. Recent projects have focused on building renovations and some renewable energy integration. Moving forward, the city aims to develop further plans and studies around renewable energy, improve the district heating system, and establish new financing mechanisms to transition to more sustainable energy practices.
