roundtable and I avoided providing
a through summary for two reasons.
‣ It’s a book with lots of different authors,
perspectives, and topics so it’s difficult to
summarize the details accurately
‣ This book covers a wide range of topics and
by providing highlights I would inevitably
bias the conversation

models.

‣ Some brands donate materials
which create rapid changes in a local
economy that can be bad and some
that is good
‣ Some people voiced concern of
commoditizing positive statements.
e.g. A clothing store selling a #Feminist shirt. An
attendee mention they are proud to see their gender
represented they worry about a corporation taking a
meaningful word and profiting from it without
necessarily giving back to the cause.

Refinery 29rooms and Happy Place
were also discussed. The events
supported multiple causes, but
didn’t seem to do much to foster
education, empathy, or even enable
a conversation within the space. The
events seemed designed for taking
selfies rather than encouraging
socialization with other attendees or
engaging in the art and the
messages of the art.

The next HCD Meetup will be at
The Plant. The Plant is food
industry incubator that is aiming to
build a closed loop with an open
source approach.

closed loop systems through supervised,

aligned with Next Generation Science
