university in Tallahassee, Florida.

State Normal College for Colored Students.

3. Florida A&M became known as an
institution of higher education in 1905.
Four years later in 1909 the School’s
name changed again to Florida Agriculture
and Mechanical College for Negros (FAMC).
In 1953 the Florida legislature promoted
the college to university status, becoming
Florida Agriculture and Mechanical
University.
4. On November 19, 2011 26 year-old drum major
Robert Champion died in Orlando due to hazing
incident from fellow band members.
The band was placed on suspension on Tuesday
November 22, 2011, due to the death.
The medical examiner ruled the death from
hazing and he died of hemorrhage shock due to
soft tissue hemorrhage, from blunt forced trauma.
On November 19, 2011 the Florida Department of
Law Enforcement began a criminal investigation.
This incident resulted in the band director, Julian
White and President Ammons to be fired, and the
band to be suspended indefinitely.
