Cinquain is a 5-line poetic form invented by American poet Adelaide Crapsey, inspired by Haiku and Tanka. It follows one of three patterns: line 1 is a single word, lines 2-4 increase in number of words, and line 5 is a single word; or lines 1 and 5 are a noun while lines 2-3 use adjectives and -ing words and line 4 restates the noun; or lines increase in number of syllables from 2 to 8 and back to 2. The document encourages creating an original Cinquain poem.
